How to Naturally dye textiles with avocados. This is a short video to help you achieve natural avocado pinks. They are such an easy material to use in your home with really beautiful result.

Hey. I leave my fabric to “cure” for a week or so or longer if possible then rinse them with cool water 😊
I wish you make vedio on some shades of blue without cabbage.. And for the reason why the same avocados gave a darker shade is may be that once you reboil them, they give a darker shade. I say so because I did extracting yellow from turmeric and I re boiled the turmeric hoping that I will get a lighter shade of yellow, it ended up giving me brown. But I do not scientific reason.. But really enjoy this process which makes me eager for different results eachtime.
you will always get a darker colour from your avocado pips second time around, dry them out after your first pot for about a week so they can oxidise, the colour is always deeper. x

Here we are : I just tie dyed an old tee with avocado seeds and skins. It turned out SO BEAUTIFUL. Like you I used dried avocados. I let them boil for an hour, turned the heat off for a few hours, then boiled it again. Indeed this double boiling process was needed to achieve a gorgeous pink shade. I'm so happy with the result, thank you for the inspiration 🌻

Do I need to dry the seeds?
you possibly got a different color because the second time the pits were heated in an aluminum pot, aluminum being a mordant.
I think the reason you got the more pink color is because of the aluminum pot. Aluminum is an added mordant. I am about to dye with avocados but have read several books on the subject. the pot you use for dyeing can affect the color. Great video!
It certainly can. Have you checked out @rebeccadesnos ? She has a whole course dedicated to avocado dye. It’s really good 😉💗
You got a deeper pink the next time around because the avacado pits oxidized.
Avocados plantations also can cause huge water shortages for the ppl near them, and obviously the environment, they might be healthy but for some ppl they are detrimental. So eat avocados with care. Using the pits for dying is a good way to not waste so much the fruit has grown.
Hello 😊 thanks for your comment and you are totally right. It’s really important to do your own research and work out what sits right with you/one personally. I rarely eat avocados these days although I used to eat them by the bucket load until I started becoming a little more conscious. I like to find ways of acquiring them in places they might be being thrown away, like the market or restaurants and use the stones as many times as they will give me colour 💗

As you have mentioned, that off ones from a marked vendor for your projects. I think that’s rly good! As I said, eating them with care is the way to go, since there is an economic & work & ppl behind that whole industry, just support the right producers & don’t eat bucks of them ;) is the way to go in my opinion.

Love this video! I am experimenting with avacado pits right now. The "alum" in the aluminum is changing the pH of the dye to alkaline creating more pink!
I suspect that the heat would have released more of the pigment. Try passionfruit skin, the dark skinned will give you a similar shade but a bit more intense. Thank you

i dont know if someone already mentioned this but it could of been a reaction with the aluminum from the pot or maybe just the extra heat
Thank you ☺️🙏🏽 yes they did. It’s been a while since that video and I’ve done a lot more dyeing and it seems to be more to do with how much the dye is able to oxidise .... and an aluminium pot 😘

Hi Lydia.
Thank you so much. To prep your fabric it’s a good idea to thoroughly clean or “scour” it and then mordant it before dyeing. Or you can try soy milk as a binder which helps the colours stick to the fiber. ... we’ve got a video on soy milk and planning to do some more mordanting techniques soon 🌱
Could you teach us about dying with sunflowers, whole and the seeds?

I always got iron/steam my items after dyeing … sometimes I’m not sure if it’s psychological but I does help “set “ the colours ☺️

Hey this was my first ever video and was trying out letting the avocado stones soak first .... I’ve since realised it doesn’t tend to make much difference... I think we will do a new avocado video soon... I often leave the fiber over night but sometimes I’m happy with the shade and take it out after a couple of hours. 😊

Hey there, just watched your video about using avocado pits. When I tried dyeing with avocado pits they were not dry. Do I learned something new. However, I did boil my avocado pits for several hours and got a really beautiful dusty rose color. So I think that the heating gets more of the color out of whatever it is you are using. I’ve done this with bark and it worked as well. Love your channel. It’s a pleasure to watch. I am interested in the wooden spoons. With the slanted angle.

Hello! Yes you can use fresh dry or frozen pits depending on your storage requirements and how many avocados you eat😊
We’ve been thinking about putting some spoons on the website... just waiting for some warmer weather as he like to find the wood and carve them while we’re at the river in the summer.... hoping the love he’s getting for them will encourage him to make lots 💗
Maybe it’s the new combination of molecules when you heat.. it could be the association with the aluminum molecules too..
Valentino Emilie yes! This is what I was thinking, I’ve read that some people get better pinks with an aluminium pot.... but I have also achieved a nice pink with a stainless steel pot 🤔

Hello, welcome ☺️ I just put mine on a warm windowsill in summer or in a warm spot in winter and they dry out pretty nicely. If you want some more tips to dye with avocados etc we do have a couple of E-books available which might help if you wanted something written down for reference. I think we will probably do an new avocado video soon too .... this was our first ever video!!

Hey there! I have been slowly saving up my avocado pits to try this out :)) I’ve stored them in an old plastic tub, and mine have gone all moldy. Have you had experience with this? Not sure if I should totally scrub all the mold off or if it’s okay to go in the dye bath? 😂 as always, thank you for your guidance! 💛
Oh no!! If you’re going to store them then it’s a good idea to dry them out or freeze them... I reckon it’s worth a try giving them a good scrub! ! Good luck! 🥑🥑

How color fast is the dye? Would soaking the fabric in water with soda ash help? I embroider samplers based on antique designs and I want to use natural dyes to duplicate a aged look, not to mention use less chemicals.
Hello ... so soda ash is generally used to clean/scour the fibers before dyeing them not as a mordant. The colourfastness can really vary a lot depending on what fibers you use and how you pretreat them... they will never be like synthetic dyes. I’d suggest doing some experiments, clean your fibers thoroughly and if you want to try something cool...soya milk can help bind the colours to the fiber 😁

Hi, yes you can either rinse it with cold water or you can wait until it has dried, give it an iron and then rinse. Hope that helps. x

Sophie B hi. I didn’t weigh the stones or the fabric. I usually play it by eye and when the colour of the water is a nice rich colour that’s when I decide to put the fabric in. Avocado stones give quite a lot of colour and I usually find that there is plenty left over for another round of dyeing. Hope that helps and sorry I can’t be exact with weights etc.🌸💜
I have a question. Can you cut your avocado pits when they're fresh for ease? Or do they need to dry or cure whole?
I definitely recommend cutting them first! They go rock hard when dried 😉
Why you mordant cotton with alum acetate and also with soya milk? If we mordant more then 1time, then the dye will come out strong?
I only mordanted once... some samples with alum acetate and some with soy 😊

Lydia Saunders hey! Thanks for the comment. Yes, I did. I usually wait for a week or so and then wash on a gentle cool wash with a PH neutral soap. 😊
Oh yeah it would’ve been better if I waited a week. But I was so impatient, I washed it right away. I’ll wait next time. I also wondered if I should’ve put a mordant in there. But actually I’m very pleased with the color, so I guess it’s not really necessary. Thank you again for this lovely,helpful video! Beautiful!
Lydia Saunders haha it is seriously difficult to wait sometimes! You could try giving the fabric a soak in soya milk before hand ... that’s usually better if you let it cure a while too 😅
Can you store and reuse the left over dye?
Yes you can store it in the fridge or somewhere cool but just keep and eye on it in case it starts to go mouldy but also remember once a dye has been used you might want to top it up with more dye stuff before using it again if you still want the same shade 🌸

Wolfmaedchen hi! Sorry I didn’t see your comment. You can use any natural fibres for this method. Animal fibres such as silk and wool tend to take the colour more easily than plant fibres like cotton and linen but the results can still be really satisfying 💓
The color is different because of the aluminum of the pan! It changes de color!
I think it was the aluminum pot.
The different colours? - Looks like the smaller pot was aluminium while the other looked like stainless steel. I think that could contribute to this.
