  • Continuing our Northern NSW road trip in this Video we check out Tenterfield and Stannum House.
Tenterfield is known as the birthplace of the nation because the Tenterfield performing arts school was where Sir Henery Parkes delivered the Tenterfield Oration in 1889, the speech they say that lead Australia to federation in 1901.
In this video we check out the beautifully restored Stannum House, it dates back to 1888 and it is said that Sir Henry Parkes at least honed the Tenterfield Oration if not wrote it in the drawing-room of Stannum House.
Apart from the beds, we enjoyed our visit and were glad we had some time to walk around the house and enjoyed the view from the rooftop observatory.
Tenterfield is a fascinating town overflowing with beautiful buildings and surrounded by many national parks, we may have only taken a drive up to Mount Mackenzie Scenic Lookout, but it was a great taster of what the region had to offer.
We hope you are inspired by our quick visit to Tenterfield and we would love to hear what you enjoyed about Tenterfield.

    Kerryn

Not feeling the ground move beneath my feet, so to speak. To be stationary for a while.

Stannum House- What a beautiful building. They weren’t doing tours last time I checked. We will have to stay there one day.

What a luxurious place to lay one's head. Just lush and beautiful. A goo dbed for the night is essential for a good night's rest for sure. Those country road drives make me 'home sick' for Australia and my family. Love the colonial buildings. Your journey is looking good so far. Glad it went well. 🙏 🇳🇱🤶🇳🇿🎄

I love a good old fireplace. Never heard about Tenterfield but it seems I missed out on some good history for Australia. The main street indeed has some good architecture.

I learnt a lot on our visit to Tenterfield and found it quite interesting to see how much of our history was linked to this town I. The middle of nowhere.
It was a really lovely town and we only nearly scratched the surface of the history in the area, maybe one day we will go back and find more.

I love going through historic homes like this. They were all so ornate in decor and finishes. It's so neat to see the original furniture and the 300 year old fireplace! Wow. The blue room was overwhelmingly blue! Haha. It's neat that you can stay there, but too bad you had a bad sleep - and were short sheeted! It looks like a pretty town and it would be cool to check out the museum when it was open - probably had a lot of good information.

The last owner did a wonderful job at decorating Stanum house it was such a treat to stay and have freedom to explore. The sleep or lack there of was disappointing but sometimes you get that and the manger was mortified when I showed him the photo.
Tenterfield was oozing with history and it would be cool to go back and visit the museums and the other historic sites.

Wow, neat old fireplace! Steep stairs! Ugh, we do not care for board-like or super soft beds. Kangaroos, fun! Interesting to learn about the Tenterfield Oration. 🙂

We had such a great time at Stannum house 9except for the lack of sleep) and the history was amazing. It was so nice to follow the roos and not have them dive into the car as they are known to do. I must admit I was not aware of the Tenterfield role in the forming of federation and learning about the oration and all the connections to our founding past was fascinating, I love how travel can surprise you.
