Nafplio or Nafplion as its interchangeably known is a coastal city located in the Peloponnese in Greece and located only hours drive to the west of Athens.
I last visited Nafplion as a child and with a few days spare on our Greek travel itinerary we decided to visit once more as the town is very accessible from Athens and was recommended as a great place to visit by many Greeks.
Nafplion maintains its own distinct traditional architectural style and has a medieval atmosphere. It is one of the few Greek cities to have been spared the widespread destruction of traditional buildings and more recently has earned a nick name for being one of the most romantic cities in the country!
It is rich in history and was among the first towns to set free during the Greek War of Independence and later became the first capital of Independent Greece, before the capital was moved to Athens.
On this trip, our home away from home was the Hotel Ippolitis, a neoclassical building which has been tastefully renovated and located in the old town and close to the port.
We literally covered the whole city by foot, leaving no stone unturned, with highlights including the commanding fortress of Palamidi, the old town and Arvanitia Beach.
