J 10 that's why she said it feels like a mess. I literally use mine everyday and people are still in awe. Some kid said my Note 8 is "wavy" yesterday lol
Hector G. My bank currently doesn't offer mobile payment support for debit cards (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay), but I was told it is coming later this year.
In UK, we can pay with mobile phone everywhere, as long as your mobile phone has NFC. In Asia, it's kind of the norm now, and NFC payment is growing quite fast in Africa. I think the US is the only country not wanting to evolve, so do not generalise this. Another thing: Apple didn't introduce mobile payment, stop putting Apple pay in front when talking about mobile payment. Furthermore, what about Samsung pay?
Well, she mentioned in the video: Apple Pay is the biggest platform. It has 86M users compared to 34 for Samsung Pay and 24 for Android Pay ... So yes, technically Apple didn't invent the technology, but as usual they revolutionized it and massively sped up the adoption.
Samsung pay is only relevant in the US. In other countries, the swipe feature is disabled on most terminals. In other countries NFC technology is already enabled and has been enabled for years, which is why no one uses Samsung Pay outside of the US. Once merchants in the US enable tap, Samsung Pay will be over. Google Pay and Apple Pay will take over.
Singin Girand stop with same it's only used in the US. You sound like a broken record. I use Samsung Pay and like everyone else it work where Apple and Google Pay doesn't. So please stop with same comments
Yes it is the advantage, but it is only applicable for the USA, and not for long. Other countries have moved to EMV chip payments years ago and we're all using NFC. the us has started the conversion and once conversion completes, samsung pay will be irrelevant.

No mess here. Samsung pay works 99% of the time. I will allow for 1% just in case I have just not run into that store that does something really weird. I pull my phone out, swipe up with my finger already on the scanner, place it near the terminal and I am done. This was not the case with my iPhone. That is where there is a mess. I never knew when a store would accept Apple Pay. More often than not, they didn't. I suppose the same would hold true with Android Pay as well. With Samsung Pay, it doesn't matter. If they accept credit cards and use a machine to swipe, I can use Samsung Pay. They also have a nice little reward system for using it. Not as nice as when it first came out, but it's still nice.
Michael I'm sure it can happen. That's why I didn't say it worked 100% of the time. I've just been fortunate to not have any issues with it. It's always worked really well, but I've noticed that it's been a little quicker in the 6 months or so. I assume due to software improving. Even if you do run into a few issues it's still the best option for mobile payments.
That 1% is because some stores like Home Depot will not allow any mobile payment, I even had them cancel my transaction just to make me use my credit card, I did use it in the self check-out :)
Scott E I'm sure that happens in other stores too. I think it's a lack of education related to mobile payments. I have used mine at Home Depot without issues so I don't think it's a company policy. I do get told "we don't do that here" on a regular basis. Then when the transaction goes through they look at me like I did some sort of magic trick. Lol.
The the issues is with USA not Apple Pay, not Android pay, not NFC, as they are still using their retarded old software which is installed on there computers they need to use terminals which are provided by the banks
I forgot my wallet at home on a couple of quick trips around my neighborhood and was so happy to have places that accepted Google pay. I love mobile payments.

Samsung Pay works literally everywhere, and in any country/area where credit cards are accepted. The only issue I've ever had is having to tap it twice (looking at you Starbucks)!
Samsung Pay works 99% of the time for me, I'm in Atlanta btw. Even at Gas station with the blank Credit Card trick (driver's license). I only carry my phone and ID out of the house nowadays!
The retailers are thinking backwards. We actually need less apps on our phones, not more. I have so many apps for food places now that I fumble to find when I need it. Let’s face it, they need to upgrade to Apple and Android payment platforms.
I forgot my credit card at a pub last week. And until I can get there I use Samsung Pay on my Gear S3. Also because my card is on the watch and I lock it with a pin I don't have to sign when I use my US cards in London where everything is tap to pay or chip and pin.
PS: One reason London has it better, because their London Underground public transit has been taking contactless payments, and banks offer more tap-to-pay credit cards with NFC, so more merchants take NFC payments. The transit system really pushed other places around it to upgrade faster. In New York, it'll be a few more years before we get that tap-to-pay upgrade.
Bridget Carey I think to help push it through this month TFL rides are free on Mondays if you use Samsung Pay with a MasterCard. They did something similar with Apple pay a last year or the year before.
I use Apple Pay whenever I can. I would love to just carry my phone and license with me but how things are going I don’t see that happening. Dear retailers just start accepting NFC payments and stop making you own apps!
In Australia Google pay and Apple pay just works because tap to pay chip cards has been around for nearly a decade. It's your banks they should have just put the chip in all cards and your pay terminals shouldn't be business implemented. Our banks supply the machines so they upgrade the as required.
big Hube the point of the video was not to decide what payment method is the best. She was addressing how certain stores only take cash or only credit or only 1 payment method...
I try to use ApplePay whenever I can because of how much quicker it is compared to most chip readers, especially after I got an Apple Watch. Double click tap is the most convenient thing ever
I find it interesting that the US hasn't had a major contactless payment roll-out like what we've had in the UK. Almost anywhere now accepts contactless meaning that Google Pay and Apple Pay work in just about every shop. The only place I've found to not have contactless where I live is the cinema. The only problem is that there's a £30 limit (although some shops allow more with Apple Pay). I don't often take my wallet with my because I've never had a problem using Google Pay.
I didn't need my wallet at Disney World on a vacation this week -- tapped to pay with everything with my wristband and a pin number. It was great living in the future.
Samsung pay is my favorite. I can use it almost everywhere. Can't use it at gas pumps or ATM but almost everywhere else and with the Gear S3 it makes it even easier
I can't believe I just watched a 5 min video about "mobile payments" and you didn't mention Samsung Pay like it doesn't even exist. That's accepted everywhere. No matter how old the payment terminal is, Samsung Pay have always worked for me. Every single time! You don't even have to sign or put the credit card zipcode in the payment terminal! Fastest way to pay!
I have a gas station near my house that takes Apple Pay and I LOVE it there. So easy just hop out with my watch tap to pay enter zip and done. So much better than losing my card every time I get gas...
Seeing lots of comments about how Samsung Pay works in most places, and yes, that's true! (Well, at least in the US.) That's because it's a totally different technology than NFC. Samsung Pay is sending the credit card data directly to the terminal swipe slot using an electromagnetic field, so the machine thinks you just swiped a card, unlike NFC where the store needs to turn on the contactless technology. To the folks complaining about me not mentioning Samsung in the video -- duuuuudes I'm just talking about how payments *in general* are all over the place and confusing for consumers because everyone is using something different. I think Samsung folks have the advantage here, but when there's talk about NFC payments being the future, and Samsung has to use a different technology to work around the problem of not all stores taking NFC, clearly this is still a muddled space.
So good to see you. Don't know if I have missed other posts or if you have been doing other things. Anyway to keep up with you? Not a stalker...hahahah... just like you segments. Keep 'em coming.
For any businesses that may see this comment, I just want you to know that there have been times that I have forgotten my wallet realizing its gone at checkout, but those businesses that accepted mobile/nfc payments such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc didn't lose out on my business that day because I could still use my phone. Those companies and stores that did not accept my phone unfortunately didn't make any sale with me those times. Please stop being so stubborn about accepting mobile payments, you are losing potential business over it and NO we don't want yet another app to open for just YOUR store, we hate that. Just let us tap our phones and be done. Anyone else ever saved by being able to pay with your phone when your wallet's gone missing??
Before Apple Pay, Google Wallet was Google Wallet. After Apple Pay launched, Google Wallet split into Google Wallet and Android Pay. Later on, Android Pay and Google Wallet merged back into each other to create Google Pay.
A politician in Philadelphia got mad at Sweetgreen for having cashless transactions. It's the same politician that put a sugar tax on soft drinks. Government should not dictate what private businesses handle payments as new forms of payment solutions are coming out.
This is primarily U.S based. The problem with mobile payments in the U.S is that you stuck to swiping and chips are just becoming a thing. In Australia we've had the chip and tap for years so Google Pay works everywhere for me.
Here in Canada we got tap/NFC on all credit/debit cards years ago. Because of this almost all stores accept Apple/Google pay because the terminals already have NFC. Most places here don’t let you swipe your card it only lets you chip or tap.
Haven’t used a wallet in years now. It’s either Apply pay of Google Pay with both of my phones, if the place doesn’t accept either one I ask why and most of the times it’s an education problem that I hear. If i’m having to teach the person behind the counter about what is going on in payments then why do I need a person there at all.
I use Samsung Pay on my Gear S3 and Galaxy S6 and it works everywhere that gives me access to the card reader. There are still some places that keep the card reader behind the register so I have to hand them the card. The only drawback to mobile payments and a reason I still carry my Credit Cards on me is Battery Life, if I have a low battery it turns off NFC and I never want to get stuck because my battery is low or dead.
tap and go payments have been used in Australia for quite some time, mobile payments are just starting to take off, however it would be more widely used if your Banks could get on board with Apple. Also it’s now starting to become the norm in Australia where merchants are imposing a minimum spend amount, so it still forces you to carry cash! I refuse to go anywhere that has a minimum spend for card/tap/mobile payments.
In India mobile payments are still struggling. We don't have infrastructure for Apple Pay and most of the shops still not accepting mobile payments. We are still on credit or debit card.
I recently tested a mobile wallet device (a fob that works with NFC or mag-stripe readers) and it was so convenient and fast (and more secure) compared to credit cards that I set up Google Pay after the test period was over and the test device was decommissioned. I set up Google Pay in October 2018, and I've only been using it for a couple of weeks. It's really cool, but I do wish more places accepted it. I have just now set up Samsung Pay, because it works with the mag-stripe reader, so it should work at more places for me, including my grocery store that only takes debit (more fraud risk), no credit. I'm looking forward to trying that one out, plus the rewards system looks cool. The one area where the phone-based payment system struggle, however, is at places like restaurants where you normally hand your card over and they take it away. In that way, smart credit cards or even the fob I tested are superior.
I am an avid user of Samsung Pay on my S9+! I have the added benefit of MST, but I find I still need some cash for like a concession stand or my card for when my phone fails.
I find it moronic that every single time I pay using Samsung Pay with my GearS3 at a non NFC accepting terminal, the cashiers always ask "Is that an Apple watch?" Thanks Bridget, for your contribution to people's everlasting ignorance.
In my opinion to be honest, mobile payments are really not a mess at all. If you are using and NFC-based payment, all you have to do is look somewhere on the merchant's credit/debit card machine for the contactless symbol and and the one green light on and you are good to go. If you have Samsung pay, it...just works! That's all there is to it. And also, did she really put her card in a bowl of dip?
wechat is excepted in LV at the new hotel Lucky Dragon nearby the SLS hotel. I was surprised myself and was excited it’s expanded out of China finally.
I have Samsung Pay. It's honestly been super helpful since it works at most places that take credit card payments. I've forgotten my wallet once when I went to Walmart to get something to drink. Samsung Pay saved me time & gas from having to go back for my wallet.
Only reason I still carry around my wallet is for my state ID, voter's card, medical insurance card, and library card. I only have to carry around my debit card because my phone does not have NFC. The rest of my cards (mainly loyalty) I have loaded onto Google Pay and have a very good experience using it. I have not been to a single place yet outside of small businesses that don't work when I use some form of mobile payment.
Have you researched Samsung Pay at all? All places that accept Apple Pay also accept Samsung Pay AND Samsung Pay works with most old school registers. No upgrade needed in stores. It also works with Smart watches.
you need a payment system like UPI in India. Any app you use will have one procedure and you can use google pay to pay anyone using any other app in the world. like any debit card is accepted in any ATM machine.
Mobile payments have only recently started growing in South Africa, and yes it does come down to a trust issue. However we have limited apps that we use for payment using QR codes to pay. There is only 2 major apps and they integrate with all banking systems. It’s becoming more popular and in big metropolitan areas merchants mostly encourage users to pay using the App system. It safer and WAY more convenient than carrying a wallet. Some bigger merchants are adopting NFC payments but not all banks are on board because of security reasons. I don’t see Apple pay or Google Wallet coming to South Africa anytime soon!
Haven’t been carrying my wallet anywhere. Just been using Apple Pay to pay. Don’t know what’s wrong with US, but everywhere in Australia has a tap and pay system
I use Samsung Pay... It not only is accepted where NFC is accepted but I use it on old systems as well. I don't carry my wallet anymore. Just use my phone. I am surprised you didn't talk about Samsung Pay.
In the UK, nearly every place has contactless. I use Samsung Pay for most transactions but do keep my wallet for those unexpected old terminals :P (Samsung Pay only uses NFC in the UK)
Very "Applecentric" as usual. Barely mentioned Google Pay in passing, no reference to Samsung Pay which is more advanced. The mobile payment landscape is a mess and will continue to be when the people who are supposed to disseminate information do such an inept job.
Not everyone has an iPhone. iPhones are expensive. It is also expensive on the merchant side to have multiple payment options because of the fees and installation costs.
I live in Melbourne and I use my phone for everything and if I need cash I can do cardless cash at the ATM. Since my bank allowed Samsung Pay I haven't brought my wallet with me.
Yes people carry wallet also because it has their ID etc. But wallets are usually in my back pocket and I don't want to reach for my wallet, pull out card, swipe it, input pin number/sign then put everything back while I often have my phone in my hands and all I could do is just tap and go. The mobile payments will grow and get big. Just look at Australia, UK and especially China or Japan, they use contactless 90-99% of the time. Even here in Europe the contactless payment has surged so big in just 3 years while USA is still stubborn to pay few extra bucks for contacless POS terminal...get on with the future because otherwise people will avoid places that don't accept contactless payment just because how inconvenient it is.
Outside the US, mobile payments in Thailand is also absolute mess. A lot of payment option, few of them that I used. For me, I prefer Samsung Pay than others because of magnetic strip reader support. For mobile wallet, I trust no one. I don’t think they are all safe and also, it is extremely hard to transfer money back to your wallet, like micro transactions. I believe in cashless society, but, for now, few companies gain my trust.
I use my Samsung pay every where. It doesn’t require NFC and Samsung give you reward points which later can be redeemed. The phone emits a magnetic signal that simulates the magnetic strip found on the back of a credit or debit card.
Google pay and Google pay send/Google wallet. Still carry my wallet though. Really hate those stores that doesn't accept mobile payment or give excuse that their software isn't updated.
The non mention of Samsung Pay is laughable
*This was a paid Apple Pay advertisement.*

"Swiping a card" lol. Chip and pin happened about 12 years ago in the UK
In the UK Google and Apple pay work literally everywhere, market stands, little stores, the lot. I have literally no need to carry a wallet.
Is there a limit on Apple pay?
Great reporting here.
Did someone say "standardization"?
I use Samsung Pay whenever I can. Cos it's works on all terminals, even on the magnetic card readers
I am an avid user of Samsung Pay on my S9+! I have the added benefit of MST, but I find I still need some cash for like a concession stand or my card for when my phone fails.
I find it moronic that every single time I pay using Samsung Pay with my GearS3 at a non NFC accepting terminal, the cashiers always ask "Is that an Apple watch?" Thanks Bridget, for your contribution to people's everlasting ignorance.
when i use Galaxy S8, i dont need wallet. but when i switch to ipx i need wallet because some other retailer doesnt accept apple pay
Sponsored by APPLE PAY
Samsung pay is way ahead of apple duhhh
In my opinion to be honest, mobile payments are really not a mess at all. If you are using and NFC-based payment, all you have to do is look somewhere on the merchant's credit/debit card machine for the contactless symbol and and the one green light on and you are good to go. If you have Samsung pay, it...just works! That's all there is to it.
And also, did she really put her card in a bowl of dip?
no alipay or wechat in States ?
wechat is excepted in LV at the new hotel Lucky Dragon nearby the SLS hotel. I was surprised myself and was excited it’s expanded out of China finally.
Wow Thanks. I'm planning to visit uncle who is In Las Vegas
@@1rjona - Nope. Outside of China it is really ever used.
Maplenerd22 I do see some wechat and alipay signs around Singapore and Manila. Tried it once but it not instant as in inside China
I been using Apple pay as we have had tap and go payments for about 3-4 years
We don’t want Walmart Pay we want Apple Pay at Walmart.
I have Samsung Pay. It's honestly been super helpful since it works at most places that take credit card payments. I've forgotten my wallet once when I went to Walmart to get something to drink. Samsung Pay saved me time & gas from having to go back for my wallet.
I don’t bring my wallet anywhere Apple Pay all the way in Toronto every major business accepts Apple Pay
China uses Alipay or Wechat.
Samsung Pay works everywhere in Brazil. Maybe you´re a mess!
It also works with Smart watches.
i use apple pay and it works almost everywhere in Switzerland
Not all banks work with Apple Pay and Samsung pay. There’s only 2 banks in my city that accepts them and they’re banks I don’t want to use
I would like to use mobile pay, I have it set up on my phone. The problem in our rural area is most businesses still don't take mobile payments.
you need a payment system like UPI in India.
No mention of Samsung pay which works at virtually any credit card machine seems like kind of a fail or someone at CNET didn't do their homework.
Apple Pay. I live in a large metropolitan area and I can’t remember the last time I used a physical card.
apple pay works everywhere in toronto for me
almost 99% of the time
except for restaurants who still accept only cash payments
No mention of level up? I use it every time I go to Dig Inn or Cava....love the getting discounts every few visits
Haven’t been carrying my wallet anywhere. Just been using Apple Pay to pay. Don’t know what’s wrong with US, but everywhere in Australia has a tap and pay system
I actually use cash the majority of the time. Unless something exceeds ~$150, it’s cash. Otherwise, it’s debit against my checking account.
I think you forgot to mention the QR payment method.
She didn’t acknowledge Samsung pay because she already stated in the video Apple Pay is the most used mobile payment option
Love how apple users look at me when my Samsung pay works and there's don't.
I'd love to use Pay. However it's still not officially realesed in Germany.
Honestly Apple Pay with my watch has been amazing for me
I use my Samsung pay every where.
