This is so mesmerizing incredible raw talent ....met Paul in Philly and he invited me to his next show ...put my name on a matchbook.. handed it to him ....my name was on top of the guest list ...Witnessed the Replacements in a very special way ...

Don’t know exactly what it is about this song, but it builds so beautifully to the crescendo at 4:50. Chills. This really was a wonderful backing band.

Dave Minehan is a great player. Such great feel. Using a Fender to suit the dynamics of Paul's songs. Canes on a Les Paul with The Neighborhoods. The Last Rat is ridiculously uncharted on here.

If Paul isn't a genius well, he is pretty damn close! He's such a brilliant songwriter. First Glimmer is really about a first crush, an innocent affair, the awkwardness of new experiences in our youth. He never preaches, he never seems like he's trying, he just does it and there are a lot of magical moments in his songs. 👍❤

When this album came out and I first heard this song I was 20 or 21. Think Paul was in his mid to late 30s when he wrote it. Listening to it now that I’m older I definitely appreciate the nostalgic retrospective feel much more. Amazing song.

I first heard of this band when I picked up the August 1991 SPIN that had Westerberg on the cover. There was a great article in there about the soul of rock 'n' roll and I bought it for that.... it was one of those days when your local suburban shopping mall record store had nothing and it seemed like nothing would ever be exciting again.... anyway there was this article about this band the Replacements and I was like, "Gotta find these guys." As it turns out, the band had just recently broken up, like a couple of weeks earlier. So I arrived to the Replacements party right after it ended, which I like to think is a very Replacements kind of story...

It’s interesting I got this album when it came out, liked it like all the Replacements albums from before, but being free from the Mats he was able to be as irony free as possible, in the best way. All his solo stuff has his signature blend of caring but not in a maudlin way. Great blend of romantic memories with no schmaltz. It has aged really well too.

I saw an unannounced pre-tour show at The Rocket in Providence (tour opened in Boston IIRC). Darren's band before this (The Raindogs) played Providence all the time and The Neighborhoods were right up the road in Boston (where the tour opened) saw about six shows on this tour.

One cool memory of watching this is that myself and my brother saw the band do their sound check at t.t bear Club in Cambridge,ma.( Afternoon of the the first concert of the tour ,they we're billed as "Professor Moonbeam " if I remember correctly) have seen a lot of them and usually a sound check is just a little jamming and maybe a few songs sung but not this time, the band, sans Paul who sat at the bar drinking water jammed for about 30 minutes and then Paul got on stage and they played about a 30 minute set with maybe 15 people there(That's including the band) sure wish these cell phones existed back then as I'd be able to upload a video but take my word: It was " The Ball's!!" have to thank Dave Minehan for letting us in to see a great moment I'll never forget!!

You're my first glimmer of light
    You were my
You was my first, glimmer of light
And the leaves were burning up in the street
I guess they tore that bridge out
    Where we used to meet
And no one can see there
You're my first glimmer of light
    You were my
You was my first glimmer of light
    Wore my jacket
    And I wore your sweater
    Underneath the bridge
    Was an Indian summer
    Purple mascara
    Safety pins kickin' the dirt
    Took off your jacket
    Took off my sweater
    And we made a wish
    Things would never be better
    Train whistle blew
My wish won't come, oh no
You were the first glimmer of light
You was my first glimmer of light
You're my first glimmer of light
You was my first, you was my first
    Wore my jacket
    And I wore your sweater
    Underneath the bridge
    Was an Indian summer
    Purple mascara
Safety pins God did it hurt
    Took off my jacket
    Took off your sweater
    And we made a wish
    Things would never be better
    Train whistle blew
    And my wish came true
You was my first glimmer of light
You was my first glimmer of light
You was my first glimmer of light
You was my first glimmer of light
    Oh, baby now

First Glimmer and "Things" are among his best solo works. A cool guy showing his vulnerability and romantic longing like few singers but Neil Young. Neil and Paul are the best songwriters for me, bar none. Sorry, Bob.

I like it a lot. Actually, I had heard it a time or two, but that was many years ago

@@rcll9751 Thanks. For some reason when I heard 'Things , I thought the production was so good and the song blew me away. Had a lesser but similar feeling about 'First Glimmer.

No but this band and album was pretty darn good though. I would say a better album than All Shook Down.
