I'd like to point out that the original version of the mall was a huge multi-storied mall. But in the 3DS and Switch versions, it's only been reduced to a regular 2 storied mall. I think that might be why the mall feels so empty now. The general public is upset that the mall removed over half of their stores.
What makes Coconut Mall stand out in Wii is creating silly Miis to speculate the race and the narrative structure of shopping at a mall. As the first half of the mall depicts the Gruen Transfer with the multiple routes and escalators. We go through the courtyard and end the mall at the food court with the climactic moment exiting the mall as it tells you "Have a Nice Day" before dashing through the parking lot to the finish line.
another detail is that in the mkwii version, the mall was a real mall that was temperorarly transformed into a race track, you can see it with the "metallic roads" that divice each section and the escalator which was a real escalator with individual steps instead of the flat boosting terrain we have on other versions. also there are a lot more spectators on the wii version which greatly emphasize on the track's theme
The color of the escalators being changed may have been due to the fact that Nintendo wanted to make the track more accessible to those who have trouble seeing, it no doubt makes the track easier but it's just something to consider as to why the change was made
I'd say the 3ds one is kinda ok, since the hardware limitations, and the fact it had to be "shrink" as the Wii/Switch version had the size to fit 12 racers, whereas the 3DS only accomodated 8. Without mentioning the starcase colouring was "needed" since there was no Pianta to check on. So mostly I'm ok with the 3DS version, but oh boy they massacred our boi in the Switch version :(
The thing I love about smaller channels at the early stage is seeing the quality improvement as the creator begins to learn and grow. Keep up the great work!
The Mario Kart Tour version of this track funnily enough is better than the 8 version since the cars in the parking lot do move back and forth like the original, it just has the disadvantage of being stuck in tour, which is just not that good of a game, and only for 2 weeks max when it feels like showing up
Many forget about the Disco Looking ball that spins in the Mall original from Wii. It has been completely removed from the Mk7 and 8s version. Only MK Wii has this feature of the mall.
So apparently it was datamined that the mk8/tour version WAS supposed to have moving cars that behaved _very_ similar to the wii and 3ds versions, but was scrapped for some odd reason. Im surprised you didnt talk about the music. While I know the original theme is a cult classic and that its status quo to bash anything music wise that doesnt sound like the original, mk8's arrangement is not something to sleep on. Being composed with real music this time, many people have said it doesnt sound as chaotic... and thats not a bad thing in my opinion. In the original, everything kinda just blends together and makes the melody feel "noisy". The mk8 version feels cleaner and Im especially a big fan of the drums in it. The sax is the absolute cherry on top. Now imagine if the original had a real sax solo, that would have sounded amazing!
Dude, I thought I was watching a video from a Nintendo channel with like 50k subscribers. This editing is top tier. My only criticism is sometimes the mic just decides to amplify ten fold, but other than that, you're amazing!
I personally hate that they removed the metal stairs from Mario Kart 8's version and replaced them with what looks like a reused tennis court. Don't get me wrong, the little Pipe and ? Block display is nice but not in exchange for the metal stairs.
The metal was out of place in wii and i loved it, from the litle holes you could see there was more stores and other things, after all Coconut Mall is a mall not a racung track In wii it felt as if they had placed some things there just for the race In MK8 it just feels like a race track that tries to look look like a mall, not a mall that has been momentarily changed for a race
the escalators in 8 aren't escalators they're travelators. i have seen travelators in particularly large shopping malls. Mario kart 8's colours do pop out more due to wii's heavy bloom but the attention to detail is severely lacking in that regard. also the tan coloured staircases stood out and felt a bit more classy than the average grey colour.
The Tours version is actually better than the 8 version, not only are there moving cars, the visuals look better and less lazy. MKT is my second favorite version while 8D is my least favorite version.
The only Wii track I actually think the OG version is better alongisde Koopa Cape They're both still great tracks unlike SNES courses in MKSC GCN courses in DS or whatever they did with GBA Sky Garden or Sunset Wilds
I liked the video a bit but man your mic was quiet so i had to turn the volume up on my volume booster but then there was 3:38 😭 still a good video this is one of the best mario kart tracks of all time
This might be controversial, but visually, I think the 8DX version of the track looks the best. It looks so much more vibrant and I like the orange a lot more than the beige/yellow of the original. (also the wii version having the bloom filter makes it look less vibrant.) I don't mind the escalator changes, but the parking lot being nerfed is quite a shame. At least Nintendo tried to listen to the fans in Wave 2. Overall I think the 8DX version isn't as bad as people say it is but the Wii version still is a little better. (half of the replies to this comment are probably gonna be "i ain't reading allat" 😛)
It was actually found that the cars were originally supposed to do donuts, but the developers didn’t have enough time before the release of wave 1. So they released it in wave 2 instead! Not to disregard they listen to fans, but in this instant they didn’t lol
Hot take, MK8D coconut mall is the best one. First of all, the escalators becoming more flat is SO MUCH better in terms of gameplay as you’re not just bumping around and getting unnecessarily launched and slowed down. Sure the theming is slightly worse, but I personally believe that gameplay should always be prioritised over aesthetic. Also, when people say that it’s way too easy to decipher between the right and wrong escalators… it was still extremely easy in Wii, not once did I ever get confused between them, but maybe that’s just me. While I agree that on paper, the parking part of the track is a slight downgrade, I think it worked out really well in the end due to the corner cut you can take with the glider ramp. If the cars were as unforgiving as in wii, this shortcuts risk/reward ratio would swerve way too heavily into risk. Also I think that the shy guys doing donuts is really charming. Also, Miis are cool and all, but I’d MUCH rather have Mario characters in a Mario kart track that takes part in the Mario universe. Finally, I much prefer the graphics in 8 deluxe than in Wii. The orange is really nice imo and contrasts well with the turquoise near the end of the mall. My only complaint with the 8 deluxe version of the track is that you can barely tell that the off-road shortcut through the shop is actually off-road, but that’s purely for new players and doesn’t impact me. In conclusion, I completely get why people complain about this version of the track, but I love the fact that Nintendo chose to prioritise gameplay over aesthetic.
Very nice video but I feel like it was rushed, leaving text, pronunciation and editing mistakes in. I'd say don't force yourself to upload quickly a video but what do I know. Anyways, I love your channel and hope you're gonna grow because this is extremely good for a small one like yours
Coconut mall got absolutely stripped of what makes it good, the music and the textures, along with the escalators becoming conveyors and the part at the end near the cars that can mess up your race completely. Airship fortress is my favorite track and they also ruined it in tour and 7 (kinda). The endless void and purple sky in ds made it look stunning, but now the lava that looks like orange juice completely ruins the lighting. They also changed bullet bills at the start to banzai bills, which are the SAME size as the bullet bill item, it doesnt make sense and im very disappointed with the remakes. Heres to having a purple skybox, an endless void, and bullet bills in mario kart 9...
Regarding the music... I personally disgree. Mario Kart 7 absolutely butchers it for me. The mixing places too much emphasis on the lower notes with a lot of unnecessary reverb. It's the same arrangement as the original game too, so this change wasn't really necessary. It was even reverted in tour, which otherwise primarily uses the most recent (Non MK8) arrangements for track music. In terms of 8D's, the drums feel very out of place in the track, which AFAIK was made out of sampled instruments otherwise.
What do u mean MK7 butcher the Music is from MKW is just not in 3200HZ like MKW because MK7 used BGM 32728 and that was the game 3DS bgm was set too besides the retro battle music that from Wii and it unmodified to match the game bgm 32728 that the retro sounds why is sound compressed for the DS and Wii tracks only. it’s just that 8 rearrange some instruments is not bad it live instruments what do u expect besides mushrooms gorge has a little bit of live instruments slap on to it anyway while still sounds like the original.
Ruining the crisp 69 comments, but man, I never got to play the Wii version, and I thought this was so bland. I would love some modder or Nintendo themselves (unlikely) to bring the old track back, it seems like it had so much character, and I love it when tracks do. That’s why Squeaky Clean Sprint is a favorite of mine, everything looking like a bored person assembled it in their bathroom and it’s just so charming :) I do own the DS version though, a hand-me-down (technically a found-in-our-closet-and-yoinked-by-my-little-out-of-print-games-loving-self), and I have been enjoying it. Seeing Tick-Tock-Clock there is pretty cool. Same with Waluigi’s pinball. I wish the wiimotes for my Wii U didn’t despawn, then I could play Mario Kart Wii since I own the copy my older siblings had :(
this whole video is wii fans coping that new mario kart games dont give wii tracks better remakes when they are are already superior to the wii versions. lol
If you're open to taking some criticism to help you improve your vids, I think your explanations could use some work. You have your presentation locked down correct, but the points you make and the way you articulate them screams of self-opinion and bias, and it results in you overlooking details or fulfilling your points by citing a 'community' reason for its poor quality and then don't cite any source. This bias also seems to have gotten you forgetting and abandoning some points at times, like the pianta being a highlight in Wii, but not coming back to that point when it got removed later on. It's important to not get caught in emotion and double check if you've crossed off your checklist. Overall, the video did start to feel at times like your opinion boiled down to "it's not the original, so it's bad", and it will be important in future analysis vids you make to try not to echo a blank sentiment like that. That's not to say your point isn't correct - It's that it doesn't offer much else to the argument. Just like with Coconut Mall or any retro course, it's okay to adapt and change your argument from what's been done. Change it to what medium fits for you, and don't adapt it like Nintendo did with Coconut Mall!
One other thing about the 8dx version that I would consider to be an improvement is that they added a few new trickable spots, like the stairs at the start and going off the top of the downward escalators. Admittedly those trick spots are pretty janky at getting them to work properly though, and it's definitely still the worst version, but I do think that makes the intro section of the course even more fun despite the easier escalators.
Personally, the only downside to me is the lack of a 3rd car at the end. Once you've raced Coconut Mall enough, in almost all races the escalators always start on the right side, then left side, and then the right again in that order. So the escalators aren't really something that adds to difficulty in my opinion. The visuals I do get a little bit, but most of the time I'm so focused on the race I don't recognize, or acknowledge how bad the visuals technically are. They'd have to be as bad as PS2 graphics for me to truly care.
Sad to see what they did to our boy :( I still remember those times playing the wii version, but well at least its still very enjoyable when I get it in an online race in mario kart 8 so we take those
Damn. Coconut Mall actually gotten worse. The Wii version actually slaps bc the design layout was phenomenal. The one in 7 is decent but the one in 8 is doo-doofest bc of the cars and the fact that the Miis are gone and they made the track and car section the best part of the track
I'd like to point out that the original version of the mall was a huge multi-storied mall. But in the 3DS and Switch versions, it's only been reduced to a regular 2 storied mall. Original versions of tracks are usually the best version. Well not all of them can have that same treatment
The Mario Kart Tour version of this track funnily enough is better than the 8 version since the cars in the parking lot do move back and forth like the original, it just has the disadvantage of being stuck in tour, which is just not that good of a game, and only for 2 weeks max when it feels like showing up
Just the parking lot chaos makes Wii version the best one. So sad that they nerfed that too much in MK8 version.

this is such a "i really need to study"..."me at 3am:" video
the real crime is the escalator pianta being gone 😭
Don’t worry in Mario Kart 7 they have coconut mall and still have the mii cars
The thing is I don’t have to worry about the cars anymore in time trials in 8DX because in Wii and 7 it’s was just too much RNG.
11:18 I’m sorry, but this model that Mario kart 8 deluxe booster course pass uses is Mario kart Tour’s model
Counterpoint: Coconut Mall was never good.
The only Wii track I actually think the OG version is better alongisde Koopa Cape
