You can always just do something else in the meantime while the game is still booted up, so you can theoretically come back with a thousand or two thousand coins if you wait long enough
There’s no fun it that tho, it’s basically just playing Sonic normally
The moment you get hit or die, all that waiting is wasted once you lose all those rings.
Or use fast forward, if you don't have it, follow the advice.

For your color challenges, the mario land series can be the Gamboy Color Versions So You Can Atleast Try Beating The Game (So basically for mario land 1 and 2 use the Gamboy Color versions)

You can get rings fast in the demo (Requires emulator) Just set frame skip to 8 (Or your maximum) and everything will be 16x as fast!
I thought that Sonic would be easier than SM64 but then I realised, holy crap you are not allowed to die even once heck get hit once or else it's game over. damn
