Yeltsin used to be an energetic figure (in his prime he is remembered as the man who rallied Russian masses to resist in August 1991, defiantly climbing on top of a tank), but upon becoming President, the stress - compounded by depression - caused him to drink heavily.

Yeltsin was an alcoholic most of his adult life and long before he ever became President, he was a total disgrace and so utterly mired in corruption that Putin was able to blackmail him into being appointed as his successor at threat of public exposure. He more than any other person is responsible for the criminals who took over Russia and turned it into the pariah state that it is today.

    You can only choose either:
    1. A corrupt democracy?
    2. A corrupt Autocracy ?
Corruption will always be there.. but freedom is a choice.

Let`s not forget that Yeltsin appointed Putin to be president to cover up his own corruption. Putin promised him that he would not go after him or his family for all their crimes if Yeltsin picked him to succeed him as president. Yeltsin and his family were billionaires when he resigned the presidency.

Reminder that Russia under Yeltsin saw
      - Life expectancy to collapse by 6 years.
      -60%-75% poverty rate
      - Handing the industries that workers had built to capitalists who had no right to them for a fraction of their full value- rise of oligarchs.
-Massive increase in the death rate.
-Neo-Tsarist Putin with a one party state, with an opposition whose only difference is Soviet Nostalgia.
