I believe there is a hadith about a companion asking that question to the Prophet, PBUH.
The prophet PBUH said that they would be raised up on Judgement Day according to their intentions.

What if Mahdi predicted himself as Mahdi correctly and we rejects him? Mahdi will be a lone wolf, fighting for his rights over this world to bring peace.
That’s a flawed statement because the Hadith clearly states otherwise. All self proclaimed Mahdi’s have failed throughout history
He is already born and is alive like hazrat Esa (AS) .
Anyone who claims to be Mahdi, he can't be Mahdi.
