Hi, my name is Elie Moses and I am a 23 Year-Old Law and Film student here in Sydney, Australia. We finished reaction to Breaking Bad and now it is time to watch BETTER CALL SAUL for the first time! Here is my reaction to episode 5 of Season 3!

One of the greatest episodes in the history of television. What else is there to say? Masterpiece.
One of the best episodes in the BrBa universe, imo. It was a rough episode, in part because you can see that Jimmy felt guilty for doing it, but he was in self-preservation mode. And I do think that Jimmy brought in Rebecca for Chuck's benefit, not to rattle him. She was there to pick up the pieces.
I actually think Jimmy did it for BOTH reasons. He knew it would unsettle Chuck but he knew she would try to help Chuck pick up the pieces.
I can't say what hasn't already been said in the comments. Gave me full body chills upon seeing it the first time, still get them after all these years. Few little tidbits for you:
Gordon Smith’s remarkable script here went on to get him an Emmy nomination (his second) at the 69th ceremony, and he was awarded the Writers Guild of America Award, deservedly so. The script has over 30 pages of dialogue alone - more than any other episode. For inspiration, he watched numerous genuine court hearings, most clocking in at over 5 hours long. He called them “really fucking boring”.
Shoutout to Dan Sackheim on directing this - his first episode for BCS. Vince likes testing new directors out, often giving them episodes that have as fewer locations as possible (imagine Rian Johnson’s reaction when he was given the ‘Fly’ ep). Dan managed to do a stellar job. He wanted no other light source in Chuck’s house except candlelight, drawing inspiration from Kubrick’s ‘Barry Lyndon’. And regarding the filming of Chuck losing his shit around Rebecca, before tossing the phone, Dan didn’t shoot on digital - he shot on a 50+ year old 35mm handheld, with some exposure. The most analogue they’ve gone on the show.
You mentioned the expressions on the faces of Jimmy and Kim in the bathroom as we slipped into Act 2 - I love it when you notice this as well. Their morning routine is often playful from what we've seen, now, it's grave. As Vince always says - and it certainly stands for this ep - "truly great acting is when you have nothing to say at all, or when you're simply having to listen and react." Study any cast member on this show or BB who has a scene where they have no lines but just listen and react through expression and you still get an acting masterclass.
Recognise the clock display upon Chuck’s arrival to testify - it reads: 12:16 - that being the address of the Mesa Verde bank that Jimmy changed to replace 1261. Also, Chuck tells Rebecca the lie as to why there’s no power - that the city mixed up his address (512) with another (215). Also, so many more spacious and modern locations were on the table to use, but Dan really felt it needed to be more confined, in a slightly more dated looking room to benefit the scenes. Glad they trusted his instinct.
Before the episode even aired, Peter and Vince took it to California and gave a room packed with lawyers a special viewing to get their opinions. Everyone in the room loved it, before telling the guys a seemingly endless list of everything Jimmy did wrong. The lawyers also told them stories of actual stunts that have been played in real cases across Cali, each one a lot more grander and immoral than Jimmy’s. One of them they actually use down the line in a later season, looking forward to seeing if you can spot it!
The final verbal tennis match between Jimmy and Chuck is strikingly similar to a scene in one of Vince’s favourite films, ‘The Caine Mutiny’. It has a fascinating final courtroom scene in which a suspicious, authoritarian, by-the-book Navy captain cracks under cross-examination. There’s a scene in the film that’s also mirrored in another episode way down the line - I’ll point it out when we get to that bridge. It’s also the film Mike watches in ‘Madrigal’. And as I replied below to another subs comment regarding the camera lens used as Chuck rants - as we have that creeping Kubrick-style push in - Dan said he simply used a wider lens, so we the audience can experience, externally, Chuck’s mania a lot more. Glad you enjoyed "Chicken-airy", counsellor!
as much as how flawed chuck is, it choked me up seeing him break like that
Another thing I love is they established here is that Chuck changed his house and had to start hiding his condition from Rebecca (his condition started) roughly after Jimmy got his law license… coincidence, I think not.
As they zoomed in on Chuck during his deranged rant (deranged somehow despite the fact that every single thing he said was 100% accurate), the camera had some sort of fisheye or zoom lens, which had the effect of subtlety distorting Chuck’s features, adding to the sense of derangement and madness.
Nah he didn’t seem deranged
It was just a wider lens - although I questioned it myself, until I heard Dan Sackheim say in an interview that he just used a wider lens so "we, externally, feel Chuck's mania a lot more". Plus marrying that with the slow Kubrick-esque push in, which they rarely do on the show, but I know Peter Gould's used it a couple of times by this point however.
The moment I saw that Exit sign looming over Chuck, all I could say was exactly as Chuck said…”Let justice be done, though the heavens fall.”
I definitely agree on the back-and-forth transition between the court hearing, and Jimmy and Kim! But I honestly haven’t thought of it like you pointed out, how it tells a story, until watching this reaction, especially after you pointed it out!
I haven’t thought about the facial expressions till now. But getting a proper read at them, it definitely speaks louder than even the loudest, most colourful quote, even louder than Chuck’s Chicanery tantrum 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Jimmy has this look of uncertainty while he’s looking down, while Kim has this look of “I’ve got your back, no matter what happens.”
Now I know why Jimmy had that look of uncertainty. It wasn’t just because of fear of disbarment, if it even was about that at all. It was about what Jimmy was about to ultimately resort to in order to get a W over Chuck.
This episode is one of the best TV episodes of all time. That crazed monologue by Michael McKean 😍

A thing I love about this episode is how they strategically drop bits of information they know will be objected to influence the panel and get their points across. Everything by both sides are so intentional. The objections and the rulings barely phase anyone or disrupt their rhythm.

I am not crazy! I know he swapped those numbers! I knew it was 1216. One after Magna Carta. As if I could ever make such a mistake. Never. Never! I just - I just couldn't prove it. He - he covered his tracks, he got that idiot at the copy shop to lie for him. You think this is something? You think this is bad? This? This chicanery? He's done worse. That billboard! Are you telling me that a man just happens to fall like that? No! He orchestrated it! Jimmy! He defecated through a sunroof! And I saved him! And I shouldn't have. I took him into my own firm! What was I thinking? He'll never change. He'll never change! Ever since he was 9, always the same! Couldn't keep his hands out of the cash drawer! But not our Jimmy! Couldn't be precious Jimmy! Stealing them blind! And he gets to be a lawyer!? What a sick joke! I should've stopped him when I had the chance! And you - you have to stop him!
I like how, in the beginning Chuck turns to Slippin' Jimmy when he needs to lie to Rebecca, and the story Jimmy comes up with is an address mix-up. I assume that's a big reason Chuck was so certain the Mesa Verde mix-up was Jimmy's doing.

Howard mentions the Charlie Hustle nickname in the season 1 finale so that was set up prior
I think at this point it should be clear ghat Howard never resented Jimmy- he has other flaws/wrongdoings, namely (outside of the Kim conflict) not having ghe backbone to buck Chuck's wishes and either inform Jimmy about the situation so he can move on, or try to hire him.
But he liked Jimmy and isn't classist; remember he told Kim that he "wanted to make a differnce" before his dad convinced him to join HMM, and he wasnt opposed to Kim rising in the world outside of their personal conflict.
Idk- i watched the whole show live and during season one Chuck was my favorite and Howard was my 2nd favorite, I predicted the twist early on and held on my Howard defense and was vindicated by finale time; then the fandom started to worship Howard, and Howard remained my fav but I try to be balanced on characters, like you said none of them are all good; and during the off season/season 2 I pointed out his flaws and gave critique when i beleived waranted, so I didnt have the whiplash the Howard the angel crew did, when he was vindictivene towards Kim.
It's funny to me, a battery does not create any EM field sitting idle. EM is generated with the flow of electricity and especially something like AC rather than DC. However a little battery hurts Chuck, pretty decent evidence to me it's 100% mental.
I thought the same thing, there’s no EM field if there’s no current. On a similar note, I’ve always found it interesting that all light is EM radiation, including the light from his lanterns and sunlight. So yea, definitely in his head lol

Also, fun fact about Huell, you may have noticed he isn't as heavyset as he was in Breaking Bad (because Lavell Crawford lost over 120 pounds between the two series). This weight difference sparked a joke among the fans, based on Rhea Seehorn's weight (119 pounds), that Kim wasn't in Breaking Bad because Huell ate her. 😂

The sad thing is Chuck is 100% right about everything concerning Jimmy.
But Chuck's perspective is unreliable because he's mentally ill. That is Jimmy defense. The planting of the battery on Chuck may not be admissible, but this isn't a trial. It's just a bar hearing. Chuck's reaction to the battery lays the groundwork for Jimmy's point, which is the tape doesn't mean anything without the context of the situation in which it was recorded. The recording, taken another way, demonstrates Jimmy's concern for his brother's health and his reason for placating Chuck. That concern has always been genuine, so Jimmy uses it, even if it's a manipulation to throw doubt on the validity of his recorded confession to Chuck. Now, since the board is in doubt, they must throw it out.
He isnt right. With hindsight it seems like Chuck was right about him but its not as simple as that. Its a self fulfilling prophecy. We meet Jimmy in Season 1 trying his hardest to do the right thing in large part because he thought his brother would be proud of him. But Chucks insistence that Jimmy CANT change (without acknowledging that he already HAD changed) is what directly pushes him down the path of becoming Saul Goodman. If Chuck gave Jimmy a real chance and believed in him then Jimmy likely never would have become Saul.
@@jxsh03 He is right. Everything he said that Jimmy did was correct. He stole from his parent's store, he defecated through a sunroof, he paid off the billboard guy to play hero and drum up business, and obviously he did the stealing of and changing of the mesa verde documents to change the address. He did everything Chuck said he did, so yes Chuck was right. It's just so unfathomable to others because they havent known Jimmy the way his brother has. Jimmy is like a junky and cutting corners and conning is his drug and Chuck was burned by him and watched him burn others from the time he was a child. Both of them have behavior problems.

Howard and Chuck would be considered good ppl. Sure, they seem to rub ppl off differently and may be douchey, but compared to the rest of the characters in the show they’re good ppl.

Honest question: how critical was Rebecca's presence/role in Jimmy and Kim's strategy?
Startled him a bit but i feel like the key argument surrounded his mental health and the battery play far outweighed anything to do with Rebecca imo
Seems to me it was a tactic that didn’t really pay off as much as they hoped it would. It was clearly a move to rattle Chuck, but Chuck handled it well, preemptively described his attempt to hide his condition from her at their last meeting (and apologized directly to her) and accurately characterized her presence as a cheap attempt to rattle him. I don’t think you could quite say it fully backfired on Jimmy, but you can’t really say it did him much good in the end. Fortunately she was not the only card Jimmy & Kim had to play.
My feeling was they brought Rebecca in to pick up the pieces after Jimmy and Kim destroyed Chuck, as he would need support and Jimmy would not be taking care of him any more.

@@briangonigal3974 I think Rebecca was brought more as a red herring (the cheap trick Jimmy knew Chuck would expect from him) to cover the real trick with the battery.
