- People and countries worldwide are facing more droughts, more heat and growing water shortages. Even in Germany a sufficient supply of water cannot be taken for granted everywhere. The hope now is to secure that supply with new - and old - ideas.
The situation in Germany is not comparable to that in many hotter countries, but even here the search for clean water is becoming a growing challenge. Some regions have had an acutely dry last few years, and groundwater levels have plummeted. The causes are not just more drought periods but also soil sealing - and higher pollutant levels in the water have also become a problem.
The search for solutions has many facets. Günther Westenhoff has spent years using his divining rod to track down water sources for drilling companies. Increasing aridity means they have to bore deeper and deeper. While he cannot explain how his divining rod works, he shows us that it produces results.
Water rights - who is permitted to extract how much water - are becoming a source of growing contention. In the small southern German town of Bergtheim the mayor has been trying to mediate between consumers and farmers, who require more water for their crops. One solution would be a long-distance pipeline - but the costs would have to be passed on to those consuming the water.
It’s been a wakeup call for customers, says civil engineer Andreas Baur, who is based nearby. He provides advice on finding water supplies - and has become a very busy man. Many local authorities are eager to prepare for further dry periods by drilling new wells. Bauer says water consumption has risen - in industry, farming and for private demand, such as for filling swimming pools. The first step in locating water is to compile hydrogeological maps and calculate the groundwater flow. Then the geologists recommend specific spots to conduct drilling.
In northern Germany it’s not just climate change causing problems with water. In large parts of Lower Saxony and North Rhine Westphalia, upper groundwater areas have been rendered unusable by the farming sector’s sprays, nitrates from liquid manure and fermentation residues. Egon Harms from the OOWV water provider says they now need a 10-year head-start with drilling before the same things happens to deeper layers. Things are looking bleak, and although Germany is now finally complying with nitrate limits after years of EU pressure, Egon Harms insists that far too little action is being taken to protect drinking water.

We can put back the hedges, ponds and ditches that were torn out to increase the size of fields. Industrial agriculture is a disaster. Organic farming and crop rotation protect yields even in dry years, because the regenerated soil retains water.
in soviet union in estonia, i remember farming was done like that.. if u used the field one year, ui didnt use the same field for next 2 years.. and used somewhere else...

There are some infrastructures that help to retain rain water and recharge water tables.
As well the swamps can help to retain and infiltrate water in the ground.
Some swamps could be restored in strategic points to ensure water infiltration.
The nitrate concentration can be treated with biological processes.
A lot can be done.

I find it interesting how water shortage, small water pipes and climate change are framed as the problem, rather than looking at human production and consumption and GHG output rates and the economic ideals that drive growth.

Its never talked about but we are overpopulated we live on just 1% of the worlds fresh water supply the other 99% is salt water so 8 billion people and counting plus all the animals on the planet plus the waste plus all the water we use to grow amd make things we are headed for a huge disaster this is just the start i hope im not here when it happens because without water we are doomed we will never run out but there wont be enough for everybody that im sure of!!

The root of the problem here is not climate change. Water is a renewable resource. If a system keeps extracting but doesnt hold space for water cycle to recharge , water scarcity is just a natural consequence. If the ground water table doesnt get recharged , start building surface water lanscape features to hold water that comes as precipitation. Slow the water that down , let it seep in . Increase the land surface where water can seep down , improve soil organic matter . For every 1 percentage increase in soil organic matter it holds 20000 more liters per hector.
At last someone who can see past the "Climate Change" excuse.
Of course the problems outlined in the documentary can be caused by *both* climate change *and* poor water management practices.

Heating of the atmosphere results, among many other things, in increasing the atmosphere's capacity for holding water. As the atmospheric patterns change due to global climate change, the redistribution of atmospheric water changes. This means that many land areas which have had adequate rain patterns before, now face long periods of drought; conversely, those areas which historically have had low annual rainfall now are faced with an overabundance of rain, resulting in floods and severe erosion. Because the Earth is over 70% covered by water, most of this redistribution of water falls over the oceans, contributing to the dilution of ocean water salinity. Adding to this is fresh water from melting glaciers and the poles. This change in salinity contributes significantly to the disruption of ocean currents, and thus the weather patterns all over the world. Climate change itself is natural; however, the speed at which it is changing now is not natural, and as the vast majority of scientific study shows, this rapid increase in climate change is clearly due to human activity, far exceeding our current political willingness - and possibly our ability - to adapt in time to avert global catastrophe.
Farmers in Poland are starting to change farming techniques. Goal? Improving water retention of fields. This is just the beginning. All industries will have to change how they use the water.
No matter how much you try to avoid food and water shortages, there will always be more scarcity and famine. Cutting back will not help avoid a very obvious inevitability, which is quickly becoming a realisation

Built reservoir under ground, built filter stations from rocks and sand and gather rain water from roofs. Maybe it won’t help for farmers but for people in cities it’s, and the rest of the water we can direct for farming industry.
Do what India is doing with the Paani Foundation and others. Permaculture swales for rainwater capture will allow more water to seep into ground. Less monoculture, more trees, swales, and ponds. If it is successful in desertified areas of India, you can certainly do it in Germany, where you get more rain. You have to do things differently
exactly. It rains a lot in Germany, it should be not hard to fix this. It's crazy we can't fix these things anymore. Sadly I believe it's mostly politics and as long as we dont remove this corrupt/broken system it's gonna get only worse. Global warming has very little to do with this.

In my country we flush our toilets with drinking water. Every flush consumes 4 litres
We should all start recycling bath/shower water as soon as possible, as it's much simpler than recycling drinking water. You can buy filters, filter-housings, a few 5 gal buckets, and a cheap diaphragm water pump (like one from Vevor) for relatively cheap. You could recycle the water indefinitely in such a closed loop system, and only need to add a little to account for evaporation. This would make a huge difference.

Many aquifers around the world are dropping in levels, they take thousands or even tens of thousands of years to fill up and centuries or even decades to empty once they become the default water source.

They could have drilled anywhere on that terrain and found the same amount of water. The rods are moved by the person holding the rod, not by the water.

Divining rods(Latin:virgula divina or baculus divinatorius) are also called dowsing rods vining rods, or witching rods. They are used to locate ground water, buried metals or ores, gemstones,oil or even ex_plosiv3s. The military has developed electronic devices (they consist of a software like labview, a hardware from national instruments and the divining rods), which when the rods react to certain ex_plosiv3, then it is included in the ex_plosiv3 data bank. But those devices will not function when the área, where the divining rods are located, is surrounded by high voltaje cables(like transmission cables or electric fences for cattle). Using divining rods is regarded as a pseudoscience
Shouldnt each ground water well that is drilled newly at this point have a concurrent recharge mechanism also build into the site so that recharge of the resources is also accounted for ?

Nitrate is pretty easily removed using aeration and enzymes using pond's.
I was surprised to see this report. Here in Wisconsin, an area with ample water, we have water retention areas (water sheds) and marsh lands designed to capture rain and snow run off. A 35 meter well (144 feet) seems shallow. We live in the country and our well, hitting the great lakes aquifer, is at 285'. On the nearby farm where I grew up the well is at 450'. Plenty of water and no contaminants at those levels. Why aren't those practices common in Germany?
Besides desal plants we need areas to divert water into wetland areas to give it a chance to shift down to ground water vs ending up in ocean

It boggles my mind to see water scarcity in areas with electricity that can run large dehumidifiers and carbon filters. The technology has been around for close to a century now. This is why education is important.

With rainwater harvesting, and more carbon in the soil, plus cover crops mulched or grazed down before planting, there is ample water available. HugelKulture is a great way ro improve water retention in the soil.

@@AwesomeFish12 There is too much volume because rainwater is being channelled. There are plenty of examples of bulk rainwater storage with slow soakaway. Even under-road systems with a permeable road surface, it's not as expensive as storm drains and fixes the groundwater issue.

Why well if it's native it can potentially help reduce water use and if we just let the leaf and other dead plant matter just fall and stay on soil it can increase the health of the soil and increase the nutrients in it as well.

Farmers could be the ones to restore the water table if they farmed differently, instead they want permission to keep taking more and more. Climate change isn't the issue in this case. If permaculture farmers can rely entirely on rainwater even in arid climates, then German farmers can rely on only rainwater too, if they just used/stored it differently. Monoculture kiIIs the planet, and it kiIIs your business too.

Each problem has a solution. Here is a simple one. Take the surface of a city roofs (m²) × mm/m² rainfall. That's a lot of m³. Collect this water in a separate system send it to the nearest (1km) of a common well in a created pound to harvest this water. This will be filtered by the soil and the ground waterlevel will rise. All you need now is that the city hall employees move their butt and make it happen. Otherwise the city will have very thirsty angry citizens. The ball is now in your courtyard. Do something about it. Succes!!👋👋

Using less water is doable. Rules like banning car washing and garden watering using drinking water during drought, it forces home owners to buy rain water tanks to wash their cars and tend their gardens during these times. This is how it is done where I live in Australia. You can get a huge fine for hosing down your car during times of water restrictions.

We can spend billons on war but spending that on desalination plants it out the question ?? How this even make sense

Why do we water lawns and golf courses? You know before 1954 we never watered our plants, we really waste millions of gallons a day!
