There's something deeply satisfactory about seeing a large crowd of metalheads, completely silenced by their profound respect for the work of art being performed in front of them. 🤘😁

Metal and classical music and the people who listen to it have more in common than most people think. I read an article about a study they did about it. "Beyond sharing a love of the theatrical, both types of listeners tend to be introverted, creative and at ease with themselves." www.cbc.ca/music/heavy-metal-and-classical-music-have-more-in-common-than-you-think-1.5262655

I wouldn't call it "ancient" but yeah :)
The hymn is from the 13th century and the music setting for it was composed by a Baroque composer Giovanni B. Pergolesi in 1736 just before he died (at the age of 26).

I had a conversation akin to this with one of my students recently. He understood (as a result of taking a "music appreciation" class) that most metal musicians are highly trained or practiced, and that metal is known for high levels of complexity, but he still thought it was largely just loud and angry. I explained that while some subgenres are angry and loud (here's looking at you, Blackened Death Metal), the broad category of music that is Metal has a lot of really beautiful and intricate subgenres too, some of which include orchestral backing and classical-level intricate compositions. I told him there was even a full subgenre that was fully devoted to the merging of Metal and Classical music. He doubted those two things could even work together, so I showed him Ghost Love Score (album version, so it was Tarja singing) as an example of Symphonic Metal.
    His response:
"It shouldn't work, but it works! Wow. It really works."
He was shocked that Metal really isn't just loud noise. Showed him bits of Epica and Within Temptation as well. Blew his mind.

Man don't sleep at this concert. Many reactors make the mistake to watch only the performances where Floor takes part and then forget about the concert and even Epica. Retrospect is the perfect mix between metal and live orchestra (even better than S & M) and Epica slays it in many songs. Chasing the Dragon, Martyr of the Free World, Design your Universe, and the old and underrated The Phantom Agony are worthy of watching.

I love metal and classical music/opera very much. And when you combine big orchestra, big choir and pure metal than you get the best symphonic metal band on earth named "Epica"! Well in my humble opinion they are the best but I respect that other people find Nightwish better, its a matter of taste, but I love Nightwish too.

If you hired such a great orchestra you don't waste it. You're right, a few seconds of those strings was enough to set the pained dramatic mood. So good.

That's the whole stigma for ya unfortunately.. :( When people hear the genre 'Metal', they think they know what it sounds like and looks like; agressive long haired men making noise.. They have no idea how many sub-genres there are and what many metal singers are capable of.. It's very sad. I too, like I've stated in previous comments on your video's, did not really know what to expect untill a high school friend of mine (many years ago) introduced me to Within Temptation. I loved it and (unfortunately) only years later really discovered Nightwish. And dang what a rabbit hole. What a wonderful, deep, fantastical, beautiful and versitile rabbit hole at that!
