    If you write a three-minute song and it's great, people will play it again and again. If you write a nine-minute song and it's only ok, people won't even finish it once.

      this is why songs need to be between roughly 2 and a half and 4 minutes, or MAYBE 5 minutes, tops, IF you can actually write a song.

    Full disclosure: the song I submitted to Glenn on his last Submit Your Mix episode was originally just over seven minutes. I chopped it down to four and a half.

      @skratchrapture Beth Hart is one of the best song writers right now. She submits 40 songs to get 10 on the album. That's just the songs she summited. Many acts "that made it" had just one hit song in their whole career.

    Mad thing about my love of this show is, I'm not even into modern metal and really only classic metal from 70s and 80s. Music I love now and make is nothing like metal at all, although there's some crazy noise involved. What I love about this show is Glenn and his commitment to "telling truth to power" and not shilling for anyone other than us ordinary schmucks trying to make music out here in the real world. Also like him getting into a full on rant and love the music to "Butthurt of the Week" 😎 Keep being you Glenn and of course, go forth and fornicate yourself :)

    With the advancement in technology getting a killer sound cheap and simple is very possible. I started playing in 1994 with a Squire guitar and Behringer 1x12 30 watt and in 1996 and a Zoom preamp (sound sucked). In 1997 I upgraded to a Jackson Kelly, Peavey 5150, 4x12 and a TS9, this rig got me through tons of shows/gigs and was a beast to lug around. But since 2019 I have been playing shows with a ESP EC-1000, PRS -MT15, two PRS MT 1x12s, Maxon OD808 and this has been the best sound I have ever been content with. Players no longer need spend thousands of dollars to get a killer sound, modulators are cheaper and better than ever. You can get a good guitar for $500, a Harley Benton 2x12 for $350 and a Harley Benton GPA-100 for $80. Go to a pawn shop and pick up some cables and for about $1,000 you can play shows. In the 1990s a good guitar, amp and cabinet for gigging would cost about $3,000. Keep the metal flowing \m/ (-_-) \m/

    If you're going to do a four minute plus song it REALLY has to delve into weird and wonderful directions to maintain the listeners interest. Not many people have the talent to pull that off so sticking to three minute bangers with catchy choruses is a far safer option for most of us.
    Most musicians I've played with tend to lack in the songwriting department. The more "technically developed" they are: the less they can usually understand dynamic changes, or the eq of an amp 😂
    I used to be guilty of doing too much in songs. The day I learned to calm the fuck down and leave room for other people to shine my songs got SOOOO much better.

    • @orlock20

      If you like long songs, go blues. There are a lot of famous 8+ minute songs in blues. Why don't metal guitarists play blues? Most don't know how to sing let alone write lyrics. In fact, the vast majority of famous guitarists could sing except for Eddie Van Halen. That includes Jimmy Page and Joe Satrioni.

    • @travisspaulding2222
      @travisspaulding2222 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly, most of the time, if a decent song is too long, it's because the band doesn't know when enough is enough. For example, if you have an intro riff that is 2 bars, then repeating it 4 times is no big deal. However, if your intro riff is 4 bars long, then you really need to go a maximum of two times unless there is an interesting top line over it. Just check the math. At 120 BPM, one bar is 2 seconds long. Which means a 4 bar riff if 8 seconds long. That means if you do that riff 4 times in a row, that intro riff is eating up the first 32 seconds of the song. Conversely, if you were to do that same 4 bar riff twice, the intro is only eating up 16 seconds of the song. My band has a song where the guitar parts (I don't want to call them all riffs because a lot of it is just chord progressions designed to support the vocals) are mostly 4 bars long. Every section of the song is done only twice, with the exception of the lead, one rhythm part goes 3 times to give me enough time for phrasing. The song comes in right around 4 minutes. If we were to do all those riffs 4 times like a lot of bands like to do, it would probably be an 8 minute song, but no extra substance. Just pummeling the shit out of the listener with the same riffs over and over, lol.

    Dude. I'm 44, been working various jobs for most of my life and I'm basically half-homeless. Same goes for my drummer, who lives in his rehearsal place/studio underground at 58! Currently, I'm a taxi driver, I work as much as I can, will drive more when I finally manage to register my new (13 years new, to be precise) car as a taxi, as my current piece of shit breaks down more than it actually works. And I still can't afford a place to live on my own (yeah, being single sucks sometimes as you don't have that special someone to split bills with). Thank fuck I don't live in the US as I'd already be dead due to not being able to afford any healthcare. But yes, this is today's reality - not only in the US and Canada, but also here in Poland. Massive props to you for consumer advocacy - we may differ in some of our views and perspectives, but your work to show folks like myself that there are very good affordable alternatives and one can get great results without spending a fuckload of cash is highly appreciated. Kudos for that!

    We cut the head off a Peavey bass combo when we were at school, pretty easy.. cut cables, saw bottom off, speaker jack socket and air vents/grills in the side, put on replacement bottom, paint it or get some of that rough covering to fancy it up, corner pieces and rubber feet. We also cut a sheet of perspex to make a transparent pick guard on a strat (though drilling the screw holes was a nightmare - tips on that would be handy). Being a musician with crafting skills is a good combo, fancy stuff up yourself and pay next to nothing.

    Layering vocal tip - use the main vocal track dry as the external sidechain on a gate for the layers. It tightens everything up, and you can add effects to the 'supporting vocals' without leaving a tail.

    Man you have taught me so much over the past 4 months. I don't even use my practice amps or even my big tube amp anymore. I've been using reaper and a the Otto II II II II plugin and my whole world has opened up. You can change the cab simulation in the plugins and it totally changes everything about the guitar tone and even the aggressiveness of the pick attacks etc. I've accidentally played sick sh*t since I started witching this channel. I used to struggle just to do decent covers. Oh and the extinction level drum kit is sick!

    Can confirm , speaker swapping is where its at. I took the Jensen out of my Fender Deluxe 112 and put in an early 80s Greenback from another combo (a 212 GBX Superbug) and I've never heard a Fender amp sound this good with just on board Gain.

  • @matthewfritz
    @matthewfritz ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I actually snagged one of the Mojotone BV series speakers specifically so I could put it into a 6505+ combo amp. Totally worth it for $109.99 in the US!
    I can absolutely vouch for the weight of that 6505+ combo as well. It's about 61 lbs by itself with the Sheffield in it and the shipping weight adds more to it based on packing materials. It's not the lightest thing in the world so you do have to be careful lifting it... but that's also why there's usually a "team lift" icon on the box it ships in too. That being said, I feel for the poor guy that had to bring it upstairs to my place since that couldn't have been fun.

    I am happy with my choice to mix on great headphones rather than in an untreated room. Plugins provide crosstalk as needed so thats not a big issue. My headphones (Ollo S4R1.1) came with a frequency response measurement for each driver so I am confident that they are sufficiently neutral (and not harmon curve). The headphone amp in my interface is insufficient, so an outboard amp was required.

    I've changed pickups a couple of times, it's not a massive change, but I do like the difference in the "reaction" of the guitar, especially doing cleans. I know we play metal, but I'd argue cleans are even more important in this case, because they have to have a sound that can match the onslaught of the amp, when you're playing clean parts.

    • @travisspaulding2222
      @travisspaulding2222 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, Glenn sees it kind of short sightedly. He gets cleans in the studio by taking the amp and making the adjustments he needs to make, throw a little delay and/or chorus on it, and boom, nice cleans. However, and people who play a 5150 can attest to this, what about when you are playing live (not necessarily on stage, but just trying to play a song all the way through without stopping) and your amp doesn't have a great clean channel, and it is a shared EQ. You have a lot less to work with there, so a pickup that sounds the way you like it on the clean channel helps a ton with taming an amp when you want to go clean. When I used to have an EMG 81, I always had to roll down the volume and sometimes the tone when I went clean because it was kind of thin and harsh. The 85 was much better for playing clean because it had more low end, but my two favorite pickups are the DiMarzio Evo and the Super Distortion. I like the SD better just slightly because the output is higher, so it matches the rest of my guitars volume wise. The Evo I seem to need to boost the volume a little bit on stage, but it sounds fantastic.

    I bought a UA Volt 4 to use for live virtual instrument use on my Windows 10 laptop. The drivers have been absolutely stable, it works well with low latency, and if you have USB-C on your computer, the Volt is bus-powered (you don't need the wall-wart power supply). I haven't tested the mic pres at all, but as far as its converters go, they sound just fine! My "big rig" has Lynx Aurora(n) converters -- some of the best on the market -- and I have Neve, Twin Servo, and a Sebatron valve preamp. So the thing with quality pickups is mostly how they react to your picking dynamics. At least, IMO. Subtle nuances matter whether you are playing clean or "metal". That's what makes a unique tone. Some high-end pickups are worth the price, and on the other side, you can find cheaper options that can get the job done. Use your ears. It's up to personal preferences.

    I wonder how many people who think they have to change their guitar pickups ever thought of just adjusting the height of the pickups first. If the pickups are raised a little higher they will have more output, because the magnetic field of the pickups gets closer to the strings. If you want less output you lower the pickup height.

    The reason I replaced a pickup for the first time is that due to its construction it wasn't capable of what I've wanted to do.
    The stock humbucker on one of my HSS Strats was only a 3 conductor wire, meaning in my case it was only capable of being split with the outside coil (closer to the bridge), I on the other hand wanted to split with the inside coil (closer to the sweetspot of the guitar), so I had no choice other than to swap the pickup.
    the tone shift was not between the two pickups, but purely between splitting the different coils.

    13:44 This bit cut pretty deep, as I had, once, been the bright-eyed youth that bought in to the biggest lie of my generation [Millenial]. I had been sold the idea and "guarantee" of getting loans, putting my nose in the books, and then graduating with a good degree would get me places. The reality of the grift came forth to have me find that my University screwed me over, losing all progress I had made towards achieving my dream, and leaving me tens of thousands in debt. This grift, blowing up in my face, thrust me in to a different life, thereby shattering my confidence in the system, as it stood then and stands now. I am now in my thirties, still at home, [I welcome all humourous jabs], working my ass off at a job I hate that doesn't pay enough for a single person to live on his or her own. The small amounts I saved to purchase my instruments is the only solace I managed to carve out for myself. I feel bad for the kids that have to come into the current world with nary a pot to piss in due to the greed and corruption of the few at the top. The battle is one of attrition and is a very long one but it will get better in the long term. Keep at it and don't let anyone try to mess it up for ya, otherwise they can simply piss off. Cheers, Glenn.

    Sleep Token worshipper here.
    Sleep Token can do 7 to 9 minute long songs because they execute it well, and their song writing game is phenomenal. It's not just the same thing over and over and over again, and there's always themes and motifs and variations of said themes/motifs. There's always something interesting happening, and they're bringing up/turning down the energy when appropriate.
    Also, Vessel (their lead vocalist and writer) has a good voice.
    Worship.

    I changed my pickups in my Squier Strat with some cheap ones from Amazon.
    (My bastardized setup I had before was going bad electrically)
    $50 for Musiclilly loaded pick guard with “hot rails”. Due to EMI’s in the studio the hot rails quiet that down. They sound fine and Strat like. Pick guard only had three bolt holes line up so be prepared for that.
    Total into the guitar as it sits is maybe $300. Did all the fret work and setup myself and have had other players try it out to make sure it feels right to more seasoned players.

    Headphones can flatter a mix and misinform the listener, it's true. However, my DT1990 Pros will pick up a sparrow's fart in a hurricane and will certainly produce more detail than a lot of studio monitors. Okay, a treated room with neutral-sounding monitors is optimal, but a good pair of unflattering cans come a close second. 👍

    Right now my favourite speaker combo is the new V30 with a G10 Vintage. The 12” takes care of the lows and highs and the G10 is all basically all mids. Very punchy and tight no harshness, no flubby low end. Haven’t had a chance to test a another 12” with the G10, but think a G12H-75 might be interesting with the G10.

    One of the few legit reasons for replacing pickups...higher output.
    Going from stock pickups that are vintage wound (~9k) to a high output pickup can help the amp gain.
    So you'll get more overdrive out of the same amp.
    If, of course, you're not a pedal guy.

    The "don't mix on headphones" thing was true until recently. But now, with the Slate VSX system (these are NOT normal headphones), if you DO NOT have a pro studio and are working out of a bedroom, it is (IMO) a FAR better tool for mixing than ANY set of monitors in a NOT treated room. I use to use JBLs that automatically tuned themselves to your room, and a pair of Avantone cubes as secondary monitoring. That was pretty good, but there was still a lot of taking the mix out to the car and other environments, checking, and at LEAST 2 or 3 rounds of revision that way. Because if you DON'T have a professional, tuned room, even great monitors DO lie to you. But the VSX headphones do not lie to you. You can check the many different listening environments AS YOU MIX, and eliminate all that trial and error. When you're done, your mix sounds exactly how you expect it to sound -- in the car, on earpods, on a boom box, etc. Is it better than a pro, tuned room like Glenn has? No, but it's way better (IMO) than any other option for BEDROOM studios. I use to tell people to invest in good monitors. Now I tell them get the VSX and you really won't need them. Not for mixing.

    GLENNNNNN!
    I think I can prove the guitars sound different aspect, tone wood pickups. First let me say, I think in a mix its slight to those that know the sound. And I still maybe completely wrong so call me a fuck face.
    I've not played in a while and just got into the Nembrini software. I have everything else since not playing after a while, and basically using Eleven rack for convenience which sounds like balls anyway, but it was there.
    So long story short. I build a sound I "felt" with the 8180. I liked it. Broke a string on the guitar I was playing. Picked up another, and it was different.
    Lows were different, highs were different. Then I grabbed a Steinberger and it sounded like shit.
    I grabbed my mahogany one piece and I was like Dafuq? Maybe ultra fresh ears or something. It was TIGHT.
    Honestly I think your point about the speaker makes the most sense. And I do not disagree with you. However, as guitar players typically FAFO alone with just their themselves, they hear differences, even if slight.
    So if you tell me how, I will get you recordings of these. This also begs to differ if the software is wrong? But I was able to dial it in pretty quick. I'll have to screen shot my settings if I can't figure out how to save a preset out of pro tools.
    I do hear differences in the different guitars and pickups. Settings are completely the same on the 8180.
    This isn't to say you are wrong or anything. I think there are just differences in what people like and they hear it. SO I'll do what ever test you want me to do and I'll send you every result.
    Little embarrassed to try to write something and put it in a mix, but maybe if you have something I could learn, not too hard, to play against I can do a bunch of short recordings you can compare and present.
    I have time, 20 guitars, but once the writers strike ends (probably not anytime soon) I can do this. Once they sign a deal, I will not have the time for a long time. At least not to the point where I am rushing to get it done.
    Tell me how to contact you and how you would like me to do the test.

    I find myself liking Eminence and Mojotone a lot when I look at their reviews. If you like the whole "pair a bright speaker and a dark speaker" and mic one of each when quad tracking, Seismic Audio has some good ones, they can handle 150 Watts, and they only go for like $75 USD. I generally prefer darker tones from my cabs and speakers, and then drive a VERY mid forward, bright amp tone, so if I don't do something like a hemp cone unit, or if I need more wattage from a single speaker, those are my go-too. Otherwise, I'm actually a G12H-100/G12K-100/G12T-75 kinda guy. On the latter (G12T-75), if you just roll off the highs a bit, or pair with a darker speaker, then it sounds amazing. Used to have an old MG412 with lower wattage G12T speakers.

    I finished highschool and instead of going to college I immediately entered the work force getting experience and building relationships, now through that experience and relationships I’m able to actually able to provide for my family. The people chasing a career in music are doing the same thing, getting experience and building relationships. The world isn’t the same as it was for the boomers where college was the end all be all. • @roareward
      @roareward ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say it is definitely different, but the thing that is different is you generally have a lot more people going to college and in a lot of cases for degrees that don't pay well enough to begin with or necessarily need a degree. For those jobs I would still recommend to start working and get your degree while working. The advantage of a degree is not a guaranteed salary or job, it is for expanding your options. College is not the only way to do things and for some people it just doesn't work for them and spending a ton of money for a job that doesn't pay well is just not smart, there are much cheaper ways to get a degree and nobody cares where you went for 99% of the jobs out there. I would generally say if you spend more than 2 years worth of salary of your expected job when you come out you probably spent too much. I would also say regarding his comment to the video about affording a place to live, everyone I know during my age had to live with 1-3 other people until their early 30s before they could afford a place to live alone as well as a lot of people not being able to afford a house until their 40s.

      @@roareward that’s what I’m currently doing, my job has tuition reimbursement so they pay for a good portion of college dedication for employees and the only reason I am going is to get a degree that will allow me to move further up in the company I’m currently working in. I think people just need to realize they don’t have to immediately go to college right at 18 and getting into a job that will help pay for it is a good way to go

We use tube amps in Narthex and I have been trying to tell people for a long time that you can get used tube amps for less than $500 if you just take a few minutes of your time and look. A lot of misconceptions out there that you have to spend two grand or something and tube amps break all the time. "You gotta replace the tubes all the time tho!" Yeah, thats not true either.

  • @CyrusFreeman
    @CyrusFreeman ปีที่แล้ว

    OK, I know, I know: I need to show my work. I'm getting there. But I have some observations that I have made after trying a crap load of different pick ups. This is a metal centric view. Every pick up has a certain amount of output, and it's not necessarily measured by the DC resistance. Higher output pick ups will sound different than lower output pick ups. They don't sound worse, they sound different. use those differences to your advantage if you even need them. The next difference is the width of the magnetic field that actually interacts with the strings. In my experience, you get more highs with a narrower field, and you get a tighter sound. The differences, however, are not staggering. They're noticeable, if you put them under a microscope so to speak. The pick ups that are already in your guitar are probably just fine. If they are letting too much noise in, do everything you can to mitigate the noise without replacing them. If that still doesn't work, then maybe it is time to get new pick ups. You probably don't need to spend a fortune. Get something that you know fixes your actual problem rather than chasing some sort of elusive tone you're not gonna get from the pick up.

    Glenn, do you know how to get a Halford-style falsetto to sound huge in a mix? My band is working on our debut album and I can do the technique just fine. On playback it sounds so thin when everything is playing.
    We’ve even varied up the technique and layered it multiple times (which helps) but we can’t get it to sound huge like Priest or Beast in Black.

    Asking not for educational reasons but just curiosity. Everyone has their own preferences for their guitars and I'm honestly curious on how YOU personally choose your own favorite guitars, Glenn. Do you care about how a guitar sounds acoustically, even if it doesn't affect recording, do you have a preferred neck shape, do you choose purely on aesthetics, is weight/balance a factor, etc.?
