Thanks, and yes, I think about all of the tech trash quite a bit and I'm sure we're pumping out HUGE quantities of unnecessary land-filling. Thanks as always for watching!
I am beyond impressed with the patient instructions in this video. I watched a procedure, paused, mimicked it, re-started and followed all the way through to the end. The best advice came early: take your time. I now have an 8-year-old Nuvi 1450 that is like new for $23.98 (price increase from Amazon). This is the best "how to" video on TH-cam. Thank you!
Well done, I am not a fan of the throw away society, we need more videos like this. I am rebuilding a 1991 Husqvarna 254 chain saw right now. Much better than just throwing things out. A big thumbs up from me.
FANTASTIC video! I have one of these that is doing this to me. I almost threw it away..............I'm glad I DIDN'T do that yet! I'll be ordering one of these kits, & trying to breath new life into my trusty Garmin. Thanks for sharing this! Here's wishing you & yours a very Merry Christmas, & a Happy New Year!
Hi Fred - it's funny you are showing this video - I just bought a tool kit for taking apart electronics to prevent scratching and nicks. Being a mechanic for most my life, well before switching careers that is the star type screwdriver as you called it is probably a Torx :) Merry Christmas !
Mr. Dunn: Thank you so much for sharing this information. I have two Garmins now and will buy this kit to repair the old one and either keep it or give it to someone who is also "directionally challenged." Since I am subscribed to your channel I was lucky enough to receive this video. I also have to tell you that, although I live in a New York apartment and will never have the chance to raise honey bees, I still find the information you disseminate so very interesting. In a sharing vein, here is some information about a kit to repair a Luggage Cover for Volvo sedans and station wagons. The kit is $29.95 and can save between $200-$300 for a new cover. It can be found on eBay. I know this is totally irrelevant but maybe someone will find this information useful. Again, thank you for sharing this Garmin info, and I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
I tried the battery repair kit (Cameron Sino Technology, like the one you show) from Amazon and I have a Nuvi 1450. Everything was fine until I found the kit doesn't have the several tools you had. Only ONE torx driver and two plastic bezel levers, not the several drivers that came with yours. Of course, mine, a black handled one, is too big for the screws in the 1450. Now dead in the water. I wonder if the drivers are color coded for size? No idea on what size I need, but tiny! They still offer the one in the link you provided, so I'm returning mine and getting the one in your link. Warning to others: only order the kit with the several drivers!
What is the charging voltage on this device? Found a tossed out 1450 (e - waste dumpster!) to-day. Tried a regular phone charger (5 V / 1 A) it turned on, stayed on for a few seconds, then shut off. Thank you
Hi Frederick Thank you so much for your video. Would you know if it is the same replacement battery for the Garmin Nuvi 1300? The 1300 Nuvi looks exactly the same as the 1450
I've got a replacement battery for my nuvi65LMT on order. The battery never had much endurance. I suspect it was a refurb or returned item not disclosed at the time of sale. Or maybe the GPS runs on the battery and the plug only goes through the onboard battery charging port. Does your GPS last longer than about 1/2 with the battery as the only source of power?
There is a dislpay that shows the level of charge, and time of discharge based on current loading. So the length of backup power time available is directly related to what's connected to your unit. I can get 90 minutes of full desktop computer work done before having to shut it all down when on the battery.
@@FrederickDunn Mine does have a battery symbol with the current level of charge but no coundown timer. Only when the battery reaches a critical low level do I get a warning. I may have had a bad battery from when I bought it new about 10 years ago.
Thanks for the great video. I ordered my kit, and it took me about 15 minutes to change it out. Thanks to the great tips . The kits 24.00 now and still have that sharp little tool that likes flesh lol 😆
Nope... the new battery was so snug, there was no wiggle room in there. I had a piece of 3m adhesive tape ready, but it was just too thick. It makes no noise... shen shaking it :)
Mine keeps saying external power disconnected or lost. It also flashes low battery power but it mainly keeps shutting on and off. My wife is having me try a usb B cable and it doesn’t seem to be helping. Any ideas if it’s the battery or cable?
I wholeheartedly agree. I have a Nuvi 1490_2015 2GB that has a weak battery in need of replacement. Anyhow I plan on updating the maps if it is downloadable with an SD card.
The kit should come with a Bandaid and a nerve pill!!!! Just kidding about the nerve pill. I'm bad to repair most everything. You should see my ghetto laptop. LOL! Thanks and Happy Holidays!
Hey, at least no one will steal a highly personalized laptop :) Every time I receive any kind of sticker in the mail, I put it on my laptop to make it all that less appealling to thieves :)
Good News. You've just been certified by Garmin as a official representative for their products as a "Master Repair Person." LOL Congraduations. You now can open up your own repair shop, American represenative of Garmin. LOL They never expected anyone to replace the battery. They think Americans are too stuped and wasteful. You've just proven them wrong. Yaaaaaaaaa. Lets hear it for AMERICANS. Thumps up ☝ people. Have a very Happy ☺ Holiday.
Why use an old outdated GPS though? You probably can't even update the maps on it still because Garmin might not even support that model anymore. So why bother? Just buy a new one with updated maps. Not that expensive. A GPS is only like 150 bucks. Why take all this time and effort and waiting for shipping when you can go to the store and be back in minutes with a brand new GPS?

My Garmin has Lifetime Map updates. It’s never out of date. So why would I buy a new one for $150 when I can put in a new battery for $20? This tutorial is very helpful for those of us that want to save money.
Oh, and FYI....if you have a Batteries Plus store near by, they usually have these batteries in stock. So, I can go to the store, buy the battery, come home and change it myself in less than an hour. Just about as fast as buying a new GPS.
Frederick, I just finished the replacement of the battery for Nuvi 1450, following your excellent instructions. Total success. Thank you, very much.
That's great news! Thanks for taking a moment to comment :)
Nice! We've become a disposable society. Happy to see something fixed instead of land-filled! thanks Mr Dunn!

Clear and to the point with zero nasty musak background. Excellent, thanks!

Very good video. I used a putty knife the width of the battery end and pried it up from the double sided tape.
I have a TomTom with the same problem so will now be looking into DIY repair 👩🔧
Thanks for sharing 😊

Glad it helped
Thanks Fred for taking the time!

No, YOU can get my Garmin going good as new for 20 dollars! I was getting short of breath just watching. Happy Christmas to you and yours.
Happy holidays! Good to see your comment, Jane!
Recorded proof that screws actively seek out and find the hardest-to-find hiding places when given the chance to do so.
Murphy’s Law... yet again!
THAT was annoying... and you're right, as if it new just where to go!
Just like Fred said about his outdoor cameras, start looking for the screw where there is no possible way it could be at, and low and behold, found! 😉
Seems to be a law of physics! Ha!!

How has the battery life held up in the past couple years . Have you had any luck updating the maps ?
Thanks for a great video 👍🏻👍🏻

The price dropped to $17 for a week or so for Black Friday! My Garmin 1450 is still reliable!
No bee's no fish no garmin but I always enjoy your videos.
I appreciate that
Great video -
Very informative, and surprisingly entertaining.
Keep up the good work!
Thank you :)
But did you put double-faced tape on the bottom of the new battery?? Inquiring minds want to know.

Thank you. 🙂 ( and now that's is changed... happy wife ... 🎶😊😁 )
Will this reset to factory settings or is there a watch battery that's also in there that has to be removed?
no watch battery

If you've swapped the cable and that didn't work, it's likely to be the battery.

Of course most ppl use their cell phones for directions these days. One problem with relying on cell phones is that sometimes I have lost reception.
Good news! We've been trying to reach you about renewing your Garmin warranty! Just kidding, haha.
Hardee harrr harr... :)
Well, I followed your directions and when I finish I only have a white screen. No maps. What did I do wrong?
I have no idea, maybe you did nothing wrong at all, and it's an issue with the unit?

many thanks mine died so will have ago at fixing it
I got the frame off...but those little screws are very hard to unscrew...ugh!!!! I've only gotten one screw out!!
I hope they didn't strip out on you.
With my fingers I’d probably/most definitely bust or lose something 👍👍
Nothing to lose, it was on its way out if this didn't work :)
