CHOICE is good. Most games I buy on sale digitally or play on Game Pass. But at $70 for a AAA I want the choice of disc. At least I can sell it if I don’t enjoy it, or won’t come back.
Just saying, successful companies like Apple, NVIDIA, don't devalue their products by literally advertising that you can avoid it. This is Microsoft throwing in the towel and destroying the xbox brand along with it.
NVIDIA charges a premium as well because they control the marketplace, is this why Sony can charge a premium for driving wheels on the PC that support PS5? You can find just as good or better driving wheels on the PC for cheaper. Don't be fooled by brand premium. You don't always get a better product just by paying more.
Usually these third person - top down lego games are a lot of fun for children but if you are an adult, you really need to re-set your brain for a low intensity experience, or at least a cozy play through. If you do, they can be extremely enjoyable, if you don't, you'll get bored pretty fast. I'm just happy this one is all bricks finally! It was pretty weird with the previous games where the environment is non brick materials.
I remember it initially bothering me when the LEGO games started coming out that the environments weren't blocky at all and just rendered in 'standard 3D visuals'. I got used to it over time but this shows just how much better and more organic it looks when they go all in with the idea.

The Series X feels like such a bait and switch to me. The message from the Bethesda purchase days was that if you just wait one more year "the games are coming", but it never really happened like it had for the 360, but it was enough to keep a lot of us around. Then the message was that the Activision buy was a positive thing, after all, surely Microsoft was still commited to Xbox if they were stumping up $70bn?! Surely we could expect MS to throw the kitchen sink at Sony to make Xbox competitive again, there would be an absolute avalance of exclusives! Even Sony seemed to be having nightmares about CoD skipping Playstation! But know, the gave us two, one of which was dismal (Redfall), followed by a new IP from Bethesda that would obviously not have the same selling power as Elder Scrools or Fallout and when that didn't get hardware moving, they threw in the towel and went back on everything they'd sold their fanbase. I'm not an angry fanboy; I've owned every PS/Nintendo console since N64, but I've had Xbox as my "main" console since 360 and I've put massive time and money into building up a game library that I no longer trust I wont eventually lose access to when the ecosystem dies. I just wish I could go back and not take a chance on the Xbox One after Matrick and the Kinect got the boot. My own stupid fault for believing Phil had a plan once. 😅
I was about to leave a comment, just saying that as a PlayStation and steam gamer, even I'm getting a little depressed about the Xbox news. So I looked to see if there was an Xbox player that felt like I did. It didn't take long. I appreciated having another console that was competitive, and pushed Sony to deliver and vice versa. I'm hoping for some kind of reboot/resurgence, but I'm not expecting it.
2018 Microsoft: "We have no games, let's buy a bunch of studios." 2021 Microsoft: "We still have no games, let's purchase Bethesda to give us SOMETHING for the first half of the generation" 2024 Microsoft: "We promised y'all games back in 2020, but after buying Activision, we're gonna push games to PlayStation now" 2026 Microsoft: "We're officially done with consoles, deal with it"
A literal slap in the face to all of us Xbox enthusiasts who opted in for “The Most Powerful Console” with the failed (again) promise of games and actual ownership of our game library.
I’m disappointed you guys didn’t mention the biggest setback to Xbox’s messaging of “this is an Xbox” you can’t directly play your own games you own on Xbox through cloud. It’s all only through gamepass streaming. So that’s even a worse messaging so technically “this is an Xbox” is actually technically not even hahaha.
Yeah, the whole ad in reality is “This supports Gamepass”. The users library that has been accumulated on Xbox consoles means nothing in this push they are making. I think this is fundamentally why people are drawn to the consoles. They are easy to use and if you buy a game, you can play it all you want without additional costs (except Gamepass Core at a minimum for online games). “This is an Xbox” is really just appealing to the idea of subscription based gaming through cloud services.
You sorta can, but you need an actual Xbox at home to stream from. I don't have gamepass at all. But if I open the xbox app on my pc/laptop/phone I can turn on my xbox and start playing it streamed to those devices.
Oliver is giving magnificent shocked reaction face in the thumbnail. Richard isn't far behind with an off the cuff disdain face. John is giving standard John face, but what a face it is. Pushing industry standards as always chaps.
@@edumorango I think there might be a number of new home consoles from companies like Valve and Asus at some point since they already make handheld consoles. As far as a new competitor introducing a new walled garden ecosystem that can only be accessed via their device, I think those days are over. Even PlayStation is on PC now. Nintendo has also dabbled in mobile stuff so they may eventually move towards PC as well (though I kind of doubt that.)
Xbox has been an eco system since the Series consoles. And things like the Quest 3 is just a Game Pass machine, it can only stream Game Pass. It can stream both a PS5 and an Xbox console, but you need to buy additional hardware for that.
Why do we put so much emphasis on the hardware and not as much on the actual games? As a consumer what is the better option, having to buy specific hardware to enjoy games on or having options to play the games on affordable hardware all the way up to the top of the line PC?
Interesting story with John going to the midnight release of Halo 2. Halo 2 was also my first (and possibly only) midnight release, and I also got the steelbook. I remember being the only person in the store (at the time I was there) that'd ordered the steelbook, everyone else had ordered the regular edition, and when the cashier was sorting it for me, the people behind me in the queue were mumbling and grumbling saying they didn't know there was a special edition, clearly some regret that they hadn't also ordered it. Had a slight nervousness about being mugged as I left the store and walked home alone with it! Great memories though.
more like "how do you transition / grow your brand from being associated solely with a market you're somewhat cornered in, to a brand that represents the future in the expansion of the very medium the market serves." Which is what they're trying to do.
Microsoft needs to make Windows bootable into a console mode with a direct console interface so you can game on Windows at the TV without ever seeing a desktop that is designed for a keyboard and a mouse at the desk.
The Halo Digsite crew are an unspoken hero in Master Chief Collection's rehabilitation efforts. They dropped two other things with that Halo 2 E3 2003 demo remake that are not being talked about as much but are still super cool to see, which one of them was a complete restoration of Alpha Moon, which was a cut campaign level that was going to be set on Basis (the moon of Threshold which was the planet Installation 04, or Combat Evolved's ringworld, orbited around) and it was about the Arbiter basically leading a coup on a Heretic camp after the uprising with the Sanghelli. The other thing they've been working on was a complete recreation of Halo's Macworld 1999 demo when the game was first announced. Originally it was going to be a Mac/PC game that was already converted from an RTS (think Bungie's other game Myth), to a third person shooter, and the level they demonstrated was very clearly an early prototype of a Silent Cartographer-type biome. These are content drops that only the most hardcore "if you know you know" Halo fans will actually get mileage out of but it's so cool that 343/Halo Studios is giving the community this robust of a platform. The only downside in either case is that it's Steam-only because Xbox/Windows Store doesn't support mods which I sincerely hope changes in the future because it sucks that especially people on console can't play these little nuggets of history
Assassin's Creed Syndicate will be getting a 4k/60fps patch tomorrow on current-gen consoles. I hope you guys can take a quick look at it (although, by the time you do, I imagine I will have already done so).
Does it matter honestly. They’ve always preferred software, no one cares about EA or Ubisoft as a brand. As long what they decide to pursue they do it well.
Neither does PlayStation then as they too put games on PC. Game development has gotten too expensive, which explains why Lego Horizon is on Switch, guess Sony just lost their identity!
So many of those PS5 Pro patches look bad because the base game looks bad. Even in base game version has graphical flickering and upscaling isn't solving the issue.
@robertlawrence9000 in this very video with the side by side comparison. You can see the original PS5 version does not have those "jittery graphics." Nah, I can't do this anymore. I can't deal with internet stupidity to this highest degree.

But really powerful, unreleased Pro models, with a lot more sales, image quality options, scalability and also the things you can do not gaming related.
It’s in Sony’s best interest to keep that disc drive out of stock. It will incentivize more digital sales for people that can’t get access to msrp drives. An entire new console is readily available but the optional drive isn’t? Yeah right!
@12:57 I assume they're holding off going all-in on PlayStation support because they still have the Xbox Series consoles to sell. Sales of that would completely tank if you could get every new Xbox game on PS5.

I was hoping u guys were gonna check this one out
It might be screen space shadows and reflections, for whatever reason these have a grainyness to them, and for the 120fps mode those screen space graphics are probably disabled for performance. Im on pc and if I turn off those specific options, the grainyness or instability is removed, but you lose out on extra shadows and reflections on glass and stuff.
I'm not going to lie I'm super happy to hear John said that he likes Stellar blade more than black myth wukong. That might stir up some feelings and some less than reputable or worthwhile commenters.
@ around 22:15 I have Bazzite installed on a desktop, running an AMD Ryzen 3 2200 with an RX580 8gb. Runs pretty great! Have it set up like a console in my living room.
Superwide for the win. The cut-scenes in wide aspect ratios are not an issue. You just watch the cut-scene in 16:9, with black bars to the sides. And when it gets back to playing it opens up to the full width of the screen. I actually quite like that transition where the image expands in width after the cut-scene is done. It gives you that feeling "OK, now we're playing".
I'll never buy an Xbox console again after purchasing a Series X. After how they mishandled having a hardware lead for 2 years and dropping the ball doing nothing with it and no ambition to right the ship in sight I cant' see how anyone can get behind Microsoft consoles going forward. The change of focus makes me feel misled and Microsoft can't be trusted.
Xbox has been having a full blown identity crisis for years and they're not going to survive this one. This is the last generation where Xbox is relevant.
What do you mean "last"? Xbox hasn't been relevant this generation. This is a reaction to the fact that people are not buying the console, so they are shifting the business. Seems completely logical.
Considering call of duty has the most players on xbox consoles as per spencer a few days ago, what you said couldn't be further from the truth. When the biggest player base for the biggest console game on the planet is on xbox, you can never say this is the last gen they'll be relevant. If anything cod will be the main reason people buy one every year due to the low cost of entry
@@Fanto_Sir The fact that distinction needs to be made is exactly what I mean by an identity crisis. The industry hasn't really changed but Xbox seems to think it has and they need to as well. PlayStation and Nintendo are still doing what they've always done, which is both, and they're doing just fine. When Xbox did both they were just as successful as well.
@@Jonatan606 they've managed to sell about 30 million consoles and they're still getting games, less, but still relevant. The next generation is going to be a total disaster. The console sales will be so bad that 3rd party support will be vanishing and Game Pass will collapse.
they broke their own fanbase, they are the reason the sales are down over the past year - so it's funny to see them and others blame that. It like a certain political party wanting to underfund something till it breaks so they can then say "welp, its broken, look at that, wonder how that happened - but better get rid of it save you money, and by you we mean rich people"
I don't think it's him I think it's the people above him since they bought Acti/Blizzard they've come into the fold all of sudden. They basically say the console war is dead, they've now started putting it's first party games on PS, it's clear where they want to go to get back as much money from the buyout as possible It's shareholders are not happy because the buy out hasn't worked like everyone thought, everyone expected tons of games to becoming out this and next year for Xbox exclusive. But again the powers above Phil know it won't bring in the cash because of Gamepass, and Xbox gamers use their heads don't pay full price. They get it on GP and buy it down the line when it's on sale
@dnakatomiuk I'm really starting to disagree with the notion the decisions being made are above his pay grade. The moves that have defined Spencer's tenure at Xbox are embracing PC, embracing subscriptions for accessing games, and going all in on cloud streaming. This is basically a culmination of everything he set into motion when he took over and started rehabilitating Xbox. This is exactly what he wanted. Putting things on other consoles was probably something he didn't accommodate for especially with the overnight pivot, but by advocating for all these publisher acquisitions they essentially bought themselves into this position anyway. It was more of an inevitability especially after they started distributing on Steam and stopped trying to funnel everyone into the Microsoft Store
So you could play games. And compared to the iPhone 16 Pro with the largest screen, you got a bargain. You can buy three Xbox consoles for the price of one of those phones.
Microsoft adding insult to injury destroying Xbox then spitting in our faces, releasing the halo 2 demo only on steam with no wires on MCC like what the hell man y'all really don't care about the core audience that stayed long after 2013 and regretting it now
Kind of crazy that John talked all about the Chromatic, but failed to mention the new Game Boy Color games coming out alongside it. New homebrew games for GBC isn't unheard of by any means but they're actually releasing brand new full games on physical carts you can buy that will run on any GBC compatible hardware and that's pretty awesome.
Finally being able to play the E3 demo really feels like its closing a chapter in my child hood. Last time i felt this was when Samurai Jack returned/finally ended
First - Hiroki Totoki. Fine ass name Second: Just shows that stuff will sell no matter the price. Sony charged it because they knew it would sell just like Nvidia is going to get away with selling 5090's for $2k plus and the lowest end of the stack being no less than $600 dollars. Can't blame companies when consumers CONSUME the items at those prices.
I love that Rich always sticks up for the Xbox Series S. It really is a fantastic value piece of kit. I bought mine at Christmas 2020 when we were all stuck indoors and it was revolutionary. I don't need insanely hi res graphics as long as the games are fun and Game Pass is still a very compelling deal. I also maintain that developers complaining about it being hard to develop for are just not optimising for it, if you can squeeze performant games out of the Switch then the Series S should be more than possible.
@kirankamtekar3661 yeah that's really the biggest downside. I skipped the Xbone generation and had a PS4 so for me it was a surprise to see lots of my old 360 library just there in my digital profile after all that time.
Xbox would be stupid to not have a disc drive for their next console, proving that they haven't learned any lessons from the Xbox One Reveal in 2013. Secondly, if Xbox does intend to be a publisher and put it's games on Playstation, then they will likely have to put out a disc version out or miss out on sales, because Playstation users next-gen will continue to buy discs. I completely skipped Wu Kong and Alan Wake 2 because they decided to go digital only at launch.
My hunch is that Sony & Microsoft figured that Millenials and Gen Z would be much more comfortable buying (sorry: leasing) games digitally. Unfortunately for them, it looks like Gen Z are much happier gaming on tablets and mobile phones...
I’m one of those people who bought a PS5 Pro and still hasn’t been able to find a disc drive at retail price. This has been a huge eye opener for me as I realise now the situation I’m going to find myself in once console makers decide to go all digital. The longer I hold onto my physical games preference the worse it’s going to be for me in the future.
I installed Bazzite on an all AMD mini desktop PC a few months back so that i could play stream games on my living Room TV with it. Super simple installation and worked really well out of the box, as it were.
Palmer Luckey is behind the ModRetro Chromatic product so that may be a point against it for some. Considering there are good alternatives I would absolutely avoid it.
In theory, I agree with you. But in reality (or imo), the DLC was so massive and beautifully realized that it rivals full game releases. So the other part of me just wants to say: don't complain, just be better. Miyazaki just keeps making peak (although I have plenty of criticisms). Also, I think we put too much stock into TGA in general
It's a big expansion with more content than most game releases. Grading expansions as game releases is not new, I still have PC magazines back from 2003-2004 talking about Warcraft 3 The Frozen Throne as their game of the year. I believe recently Persona 5 Royal also made it to many GOTY lists despite being an expanded re-release. I don't know where the confusion is coming from really, it's a rare thing but that doesn't mean it's out of the realm of logic.
@@saxoman1 no, there is no "but in reality" - they can easily have a DLC/Expansion award, and anything that REQUIRES a full game to be installed should be compared to full games.
@@saxoman1 Shadow of the Erdtree is definitely a massive expansion. Don’t get me wrong, I actually rate it the best gaming experience of 2024, even more-so than Astro Bot (my personal choice for GOTY), but ethically, I can’t choose it as GOTY because it’s technically an expansion. I put it like this, if I can’t play SotE without having to buy the base Elden Ring game, I don’t see it should get a nomination for game of the year. I would choose SotE as my GOTY only if it was separate playable game. Ethically, because it’s not, I am choosing Astro Bot. Both are the two best gaming experiences for me in 2024.

I'm convinced Phil Spencer and the advertising team were on a bender when that ad was released
The only take away from it is “What is an Xbox?”
@@SkasuaA bespoke piece of hardware that is backwards compatible with your existing library of games owned.
For respective buyers that never owned an Xbox that's up to you too decide where is the best way to play at a cost you are willing to pay.

“Thou shan’t hath modes out the wazoo.” -Oliver 1:89
24:20 It’s absolutely absurd to believe Phil’s propaganda when MS don’t disclose hardware sales, costs or profit/loss in the Xbox division.
Probably, did have a plan but the series consoles flopping changed things. Again.
I couldn’t have said it better myself. Exactly how I feel.
2018 Microsoft: "We have no games, let's buy a bunch of studios."
2021 Microsoft: "We still have no games, let's purchase Bethesda to give us SOMETHING for the first half of the generation"
2024 Microsoft: "We promised y'all games back in 2020, but after buying Activision, we're gonna push games to PlayStation now"
2026 Microsoft: "We're officially done with consoles, deal with it"
A literal slap in the face to all of us Xbox enthusiasts who opted in for “The Most Powerful Console” with the failed (again) promise of games and actual ownership of our game library.
That functionality is being rolled out pretty soon

Microsoft's XBox marketing is the answer to the question "How do you advertise a brand with no identity."
more like "how do you transition / grow your brand from being associated solely with a market you're somewhat cornered in, to a brand that represents the future in the expansion of the very medium the market serves." Which is what they're trying to do.

The cut-scenes in wide aspect ratios are not an issue. You just watch the cut-scene in 16:9, with black bars to the sides. Xbox has been having a full blown identity crisis for years and they're not going to survive this one. This is the last generation where Xbox is relevant.
As a console manufacturer, probably. As a game development company, absolutely not.
Phill Spencer needs to answer this question: If my smartphone is an Xbox, why the heck I paid 500 dollar for a Microsoft device?
I don't think it's him I think it's the people above him since they bought Acti/Blizzard they've come into the fold all of sudden. They basically say the console war is dead, they've now started putting it's first party games on PS, it's clear where they want to go to get back as much money from the buyout as possible
It's shareholders are not happy because the buy out hasn't worked like everyone thought, everyone expected tons of games to becoming out this and next year for Xbox exclusive.
But again the powers above Phil know it won't bring in the cash because of Gamepass, and Xbox gamers use their heads don't pay full price. They get it on GP and buy it down the line when it's on sale
Timeline
