I too, want to thank you for tutorial on use of this sewing machine. I was given a Singer 185 from 1960 from a good friend who received this machine as a wedding gift, back in 1960. You have done a great service to each of us out here in showing us how to set-up the Singer 185.
Hey Beth! Great video. I just acquired a 185K from an estate sale. It needed a new belt so I just took it apart and fixed it. Cleaned it up and oiled it. She's purring like a kitten now. Love it! I look forward to each and every video you put out. You are so relaxing and I have learned "sew" much from you and I really do appreciate you.
Thank you for this great video. I've just become the proud owner of one of these beautiful vintage machines. I can't believe how fantastic it is. I doubt I'll ever use my modern machines ever again!
Thank you so much. I'm a retired older guy just trying to sew a few simple things. I have a Singer 285J which looks kind of similar to your machine, and your video helped me quite a bit. I appreciate it very much. Thank you again. Eric
Thank you so, so much for this. I was given my husband's grandmother's machine for my (very intermittent) use: I invariably need a refresher on how to thread it every time I use it. Saving this video onto a list!
Thank you for actually describing what you are doing as well as showing, I feel confident enough to try mine now! My machine is slightly different but I hope I can work it out with these steps.

yes...you noticed! 🙂 My machine is not working in that respect. The sewing machine technician told me it was something he couldn't fix and that it was ok to keep using it as is. I do loosen the wheel, but the needle keeps going......

Hi. thanks for your videos! Im having trouble with the threading bunching up underneath. It sews a nice looking stick but sometimes under it bunches up. do you have any advice? I have the Singer 185
Thanks for the tutorial. I was given a K185 20+ years ago - Same model but in its own box / carry case. It sat in a cupboard until last month. I wish I'd seen your video a few weeks ago, however fortunately found a copy of the manual online it told me how to thread it. I've made a very basic dog coat. (It looks good from afar lol) I need practice and should've started with something with straight lines!. I'm looking at other projects to build confidence. Do you know any good books with basic sewing techniques or should I just keep warching YT? : - )
I can't recommend any specific books...but I'm sure they're out there! It seems YT has the advantage of SEEING how to do it. I've tried to learn knitting from books and have found that in person or videos have the been the best way for me to learn. Good luck and happy sewing!
Cool machine. So once the bobbin thread comes out, do they both go thru the foot or just the top thread ??? I’m watching so many videos and no one actually shows that part. I’m new so I have no clue. Thanks for the cool video.
Jason - the top thread goes into the eye of the needle. The bobbin with thread is placed inside the machine. You turn the wheel...the needle goes down and “catches” the bobbin thread and pulls it up through the little hole. Now there’s thread on your needle and thread coming up through the bottom hole. You are NOW ready to sew.
my sewing room I see now. Wow, one week of turning this and that taught me some things. I can actually stitch in a semi straight line now. (I’m using pink thread on top & white on bottom) On my zig zag stitch, there’s pink on the corners of the bobbin thread. How can I fix that??? The top and bottom of the fabric should be only one color right? No trace of pink on white and white on pink?? Thank you for replying. I really want to learn
But then I won’t know if my stitches are correct. I thought I’m supposed to use 2 different colors so I can make adjustments. The when I’m happy with the stitch, I can put same color thread on.....
Thank you for this... I got this machine second hand and am trying to figure out how to run it. I followed all the instructions but im still having an issue. Not sure if its the tension or what. My bobbin keeps getting jammed. It doesn't pull the bobbin thread up but keeps looping till top thread breaks. Any ideas on a troubleshoot? I really appreciate your teachings. Thank you again
I am sorry to say I have a hard time diagnosing from afar. I hope you have a sewing machine repair close by. Mine is 30 minutes away...but I do pop in when I am unsure what's going on with my machine. 🙂

I have recently purchased this machine; I tried to turn it on by turning the switch on the light; but the machine did not go; am I doing something wrong? Thanks. So much
Hi Rob. My machine is a K185. But not green or on a stand in its own box / case. I have a light switch I can turn on/off too. The sewing machine is on when it's plugged in, there was no other switch. So if it's not starting up, check fuse in the plug first and failing that there may be another issue. Hope you've sorted it by now.
