I love this quote: "The voice must be in the nose but the nose must not be in the sound"

Awesome stuff are you adjusting the soft palate when your chin is down especially with higher notes

This helped after I imitated Cornell's nasality I found a space that seemed to be up between my eyes that didn't crack and stayed connected.

A lot of legendary singers have nasality, because it gives flexibility allowing easier transition from chest to head

I was missing the "come along" gesture at the beginning, before you mentioned it. 😇 Nice lesson, Sterling! I will work more on feeling and directing resonance into these spaces.

Yeah that was the missing piece for me. This video has literally changed the way I sing. Thank you so much !

I love the arm thing, and its odd when its not there lol. It's a welcoming gesture and makes me feel part of the video. I was actually looking for it on this video and when it wasn't there I was "Bugger", then you spoke about it.

Slides are so important when trying to implement the mixed coordination into actual singing.
I found it was essential to bring a slidey/glidey approach when moving from mixed exercises to using mix in songs. Letting go of accuracy for the sake of functionality and stability. Slowing down. Sacrificing the need for a finished/nice tone for the function of things feeling coordinated.

Enunciation, yes! Thank you! I’ve been my mix and correct resonance placement and all the rest of it with reasonably good success but trying to transfer that to an actual song is proving very difficult. Why do certain phrases in a perfectly comfortable pitch cause me so many problems? Over enunciating to words of course. You’re a genius! Thanks so much!

I'm enjoying your lessons and learning new approaches to singing. Like many singers, I tried to extend the chest voice as high as possible, like F4. (I had no understanding of head voice) I suffered from jaw tension, and belting fatigue, and I blew out my voice several times. Experimenting with noises helped me discover my mixed voice, but I didn't identify what I was doing as mixed voice because I had not yet found head voice either! It was awkward and very nasally, not pleasant at first, but like you say, spending time with those sounds is the path forward. I forced myself to sing at low volume and find pitches without getting loud, which helped tremendously. Now I rarely use chest alone, kinda funny to think that's all I had just six months ago.

Awesome Shawn. Doing things at a low volume helps a lot. I wish I could instill that practice into more of my students.

Dude, great video. You said something a few videos ago that I've never heard another coach say, and that has changed my relationship with mixed voice. You talked about warming up the upper register first because it's similar to pre-loading a muscle group at the gym. Absolutely so true. I've always warmed up 'chest' first but after taking your advice, I can arrive at and sustain my mixed register so much more easily. Premium content here folks!! Thanks Sterling!

Please keep teaching about mixed voice. I'm on the journey and your videos have helped so much. I was just listening to a random 80s pop music playlist and Air Supply came on with 'The One That You Want' and I sang along in a way that I never could have when the song first came out. If I'd only learned this back in the day! I really appreciate everything you're sharing.

This is what I struggle . With. When I am in a mix coordination. Well at least it feels like it and can hit high notes. I have attemted to direct that to the mask or nasal area and it just ends up turning to a vocal fry or mess of 2 sounds and not one . This is my challenge

Great vid as always Sterling! How do i know that im not in falsetto though, it feels and sound the same when i do it. You mentioned like throwing it in your soft palate and thats what im doing now. Though with this, sometimes i dont hit the note as compared to what ive been doing with scales and throwing it to head voice.

Do you show some vocal production on Patreon? If so, what DAW do you use?
