Cleveland Eaton has some beautiful tone on his instrument. The whole band is on fire. Magnificent. I'll bet these guys could do stuff like this in their sleep.
Incredible Count ! Always genereous toward the band with a guiding piano touch. Few notes but always accurate with enormous emotion effect. A really great artist.(sorry for my poor english).
This is about the first time I had seen Duffy. Expecting to see Butch, I was like, "who's that big dude with the extra large glasses frames?" Then I heard him swing and shred. I was hooked. The Basie band just knocked me out! I was 16 and blown away! Duffy is 26 here. Cleveland was on bass at that gig too.
Duff grew up in the biz. His dad, Chubby Jackson, was a noted jazz bassist. Chubby was inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 2000, but that outfit was around for a mere 26 years and was gone by 2005, so maybe it wasn't much of an honor to be inducted. I dunno. Not my call.
Well, the number of viewers to this just keeps going up and up. Great music and great musicians have a way of doing that. Look at all the TALENT here on one stage! The legends of Swing. Duffy Jackson keeps the flame burning here in Middle TN now. We are so lucky to have him. He is a walking encyclopedia of Jazz. This is so good. I watch it over and over.
Count Basie was the epitome of COOL and Roy Eldridge is THE MAN on trumpet😍 Also that bassist is tops. Makes me think of Louis Armstrong's bassist Arvell Shaw. RIP beautiful musicians😍
Realmente espectacular, me hubiera gustado verlos con una mejor caliidad de imagen, pero como dicen lo que importa es la música, y es muy bella........!!!!!!
I had downloaded this video earlier, and I'm glad I did! I was sad to see it disappear when the account closed that it was posted on. I knew a lot of folks enjoyed watching this (I believe the site that originally hosted this had over 100,000 hits!) I wasn't sure if I would be able to up-load this to TH-cam, but it did without a hitch! The video quality isn't great, but wow! These cats can really swing!!!! I especially enjoy watching Duffy & Cleveland. They really love what they are doing!
I love this video too and I also like Duffy. I'm glad that you didn't mean it as an insult! Obviously we have an understanding for each other since both of us are percussionists and that is good!
It's good seeing my old encoding up on TH-cam.. I remember when I Had my original account put this together from the VHS I had. Since then I have re upped in HD... Thank you...
I'm a bass player. I wish I could play like that. What was wrong with the bass playing? This cat KNOWS what he is doing and is a master of the upright bass.
love how locked in basie and cleveland eaton are, and how they play 2 extra choruses, at one point ( 1:58 ) it's almost like basie says "yeah that's a good save...." to cleveland after they tried to establish eye contact with Zoot at the turnaround of the past two chorus. though the phrasing is pretty clear if you're listening to them. Particularly when basie slams the downbeat at the top of the form... Heads up, zoot! nice solo though, once he took his ...3rd... cue.
It's sad that only 2 600 people have seen this video :P Count Basie is the king =D Ever heard his version of Watermelon Man on the "Coctail Jazz" collection? Nice track, man ;)
As an art form, this music is, or was, likenable to, say, the visual art of drawing. Hardly any academy trained visual artists bother with drawing anymore ; and their art is poorer for it. I think it's the same reason why jazz artists today are stiff and too formal ; it's a very small pool of performers practicing now, and what they mostly practice is the sort of awful post modern stuff that Phillip Larkin decried. What the Count is doing here is what he spent a lifetime doing until every touch he ever makes is masterful without ever trying -- God I love him.
Duffy doesn't mess up he just rushed the solo a little, and the band didn't follow him.happens to all of us from time to time.Duffy's plays hiss ass off all of the time, most swing'in drummer ever!
At the time Duffy was the new drummer for Basie's band and that was an honor. I'm a washboard player myself and I have made the same mistakes as Duffy. Much like Duffy I tend to get too excited and I am sure that he worked to correct it like I'm working to correct my flaws.
I'm not sure what happened, but it seems like he was caught up into listening to Cleve, Count, and Duffy and forgot he was supposed to come in! But when he did, he did it in a "cool" style, as if though he meant to do it that way!
After Duffy turned around the beat, Basie and Cleve looked at each other with that (oh poor little white boy) look. hehe. No offense everyone, its just a joke. hehe. But, yes, he does swing hard. And Cleveland, what else is there to say. Legend...
@kcbigbandjazz I also play Bass, and it takes years to learn how to play like that but if you love jazz and love the bass, youll learn. Yea, Mr Eaton was killing that bass. If you like great walking basslines, also check out Mr Ray Brown the master of walking basslines.
Thank you for Real Jazz
Such terrific jazz men! Basie is the king.
Cleveland Eaton has some beautiful tone on his instrument. The whole band is on fire. Magnificent. I'll bet these guys could do stuff like this in their sleep.
Great bass playing!

Cleveland is the last of the survivors of this group.

Never heard anyone make a stand up bass sound like that. Allz I've got is..WOW.
First for me to see Zoot and Roy playing at an advanced age. They still sounded great.
Wow, that bass player is fantastic!
Sad he just died last year
it doesn't get any better. you can't find anything like this today. all the players were world class.
Awesome stuff, RIP Duffy Mar 03 2021
I won't get tired of playing this video. I'll play it over and over and over again. And I certainly enjoy the way Cleveland plays his bass.
I second that on Cleveland.
He has SUPER POWERS
The Greatest ever ❤❤❤
wow The bass is the Real deal ...
What would I do without Jazz? This is so . . . undescribable
Monster groove generated by Cleveland Eaton on bass !!!
Agreed! Duffy has great balance and blends with the group perfectly!

Amazing...very very very goog I Like this song
A great blues drummer who I saw a few times with Hound Dog Taylor, Ted Harvey, just smiled through every show. He also just LOVED to play.
Played on a couple of Cleveland Eaton's albums and a friend of Zoot Sims daughter Inez.
Love it!!
C'est magnfique; Don't think I will ever get tired of this one.
Que du bonheur 💕💕💕
This is FANTASTIC!!! ... :-D
Einfach Gänsehaut beim Zuhören!!

Fantastic listening
Indeed. What a great bass
Yeah Duf, how I found this in my feed was by accident.
Zoots Swing!!!!!
I love this video too and I also like Duffy. I'm glad that you didn't mean it as an insult! Obviously we have an understanding for each other since both of us are percussionists and that is good!
So great!
That drummer sure is enjoying himself......brilliant stuff!!
It's good seeing my old encoding up on TH-cam.. I remember when I Had my original account put this together from the VHS I had. Since then I have re upped in HD... Thank you...

Not to worry. You are 100% right: there is everything RIGHT with the bass playing!
He’s doing the boogieing.
Thank you! Great recording!
Damn man they could swing. RIP all yall cool cats/
So beautiful!
The kind of show you hate to listen to when your ankles are broken :)
Hahaha...
he meant sick as a good thing hahaha! that dude is tippin' the entire time!
Cookin'! Pros in jazz!
Very GOOD JAZZ!!!!!

Those cats were swinging!!! You can't teach cool
walkin' bass!!!!
Wow. What an opportunity!! He doesn't know me, but tell him I said Hi!! I would love to be there. Enjoy!!
Oh Baby!
Authentic 👌🏾
Да! Это звуки настоящих "котов" свинга...Спасибо за память о великих
And the patient Roy Eldridge on trumpet waits patiently until 3:27 and then goes to town.
Thanks!
This is great!
sooooo.....no comments about the sick bass playing? WTF?
Thank you Bros Google for resurrecting that fantastic track.
I often wonder if this number was named after Booty Wood, trombonist for both Basie and Ellington et al.
@kowtpr187 that was actually one of the first things coming to my mind
really swinging!
thats why I said"Why are there no comments about the sick ass bass playing!!!" He is ripping it up!!
It's sad that only 2 600 people have seen this video :P Count Basie is the king =D Ever heard his version of Watermelon Man on the "Coctail Jazz" collection? Nice track, man ;)
Rip Duffy Jackson
Swing it!

I like how at 2:10 Zoot was like "oh it's my turn now"
+rippstudwel So what, it's a jam session and he was in time!
Swing it gentlemen.
listen to this and you'll love jazz
2:37 Roy Eldrige imitating Zoot Sim's high notes .....
Remember Roy was always a high note trumpeter back in the day.
Other way around...
Sweet nevaah saw the Count live but did see Zoot( with Al Cohn )
Duffy doesn't mess up he just rushed the solo a little, and the band didn't follow him.happens to all of us from time to time.Duffy's plays hiss ass off all of the time, most swing'in drummer ever!

It's beyond all comments i 'm able to write so : 5* ^^
5:10 Count a little bit worrying and comping few notes to keep the drummer in tempo...
👍🏽
kcbigbandjazz
no worries about the video quality, it sounds just fine!
Little Jazz
whow
@kcbigbandjazz I love Cleveland Eaton

Zoot was caught sleepin a little bit...but it was no big deal for the Count; he just rolls with that kind of thing.
@kcbigbandjazz I think by "sick bass playing," he meant it as really good bass playing,
and he was wondering why there weren't any comments of praise
super bass stippi.
@kcbigbandjazz I also play Bass, and it takes years to learn how to play like that but if you love jazz and love the bass, youll learn. Yea, Mr Eaton was killing that bass. If you like great walking basslines, also check out Mr Ray Brown the master of walking basslines.
Old pro's doing their thing, and it swings!!!!!!
Maybe not perfect, but who cares.....
Well, not perfect... Eldridge was 68 when he played this, just one year before he had his stroke.
still very exiting 12 bars with the right chords ,all you need for a decent jam.
thats why they called him zoot
Bass player!
Sick means crazy good.
Who the fuck down-voted this?
