    I can't tell you how many people I know want "more bass" and listen to lo-fi. Seriously people think that the 30 other people credited on a major studio album just sat on their ass. You should make a "Mixing is real" video so that some people can learn that it's not your headphones, it's the fucking music and the music production.

    • @HomeStudioBasics

      This is exactly right. The problem in this niche is that most audiophiles have zero experience mixing tracks or making music, so they're actually completely ignorant and oftentimes have no idea what they're talking about - i.e. the emphasis nearly ALWAYS comes back to the gear and not the track.

    • @trioz1819

      We ignorant bass for mudy details in it to increase buz efect i think but ordinary people use shity headphones aroun 50$ so is a huge improvement in sound in example shity dacs or amps but in hd600 not realy its just a recolorization on done picture i guess

    Finally, someone said it! Soundstage is an aspect of headphones but out-of-head moments are definitely not exclusive to open backs with a wide soundstage. You can literally have out-of-your-head moments with IEMs, it all depends on the recording or binaural elements of a track. People really need to give mixing engineers more credit, lol.

    So true. I actually noticed this when switching between my Q30 Soundcore (closed, very bassy - though EQ'd already) and SHOP9500 (very open, quite bright, usually wider sound) during certain tracks and also just listening to the audio alongside certain videos. Though the open-backed SHP9500 often have me checking my environments, the recordings where I had that feeling the most elicited a similar response on the Q30's, where I didn't really expect them to, at all. I do think the SHP's in this comparison sound more like hanging speakers off the side off your head versus the almost being inside of your skull sound of the Q30s. Yes, I only own lower end products. It's a value/performance thing.

  • @RetroPlus
    @RetroPlus ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've heard EQ can actually influence soundstage, and it can. There is a definite mental element to soundstage as well as the actual soundstage of the headphone.

    I like that you still use the HD600. You are right, compared to more modern cans it plays more ‘in the head’. But I still find myself coming back to these 20 year old headphones. Nostalgia? Comfort? Maybe. But there is a warmth and intimacy that allows extended listening too. Then I can juice it up with some Blessing 2 or even FIIO FH7 or Sundaras for fireworks.
    And recordings? Damn, some of those 60s LPs were decent recordings - but the bipolar stereo image could drive me freaking nuts. Modern R&B and hip hop can be annoying too.
    But listen to some late 50s jazz albums. Like “Art Pepper meets the Rhythm Section”. Music never sounded better - And shit, that was more than half a century ago. What are today’s engineers doing? Here endeth today’s rant.

  • @em3Ødied
    @em3Ødied 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I'm starting in the budget area with my SHP9500s and HE400SEs. The shps are wider but the hes are kind of like a perfect blend of presence to me. These nuances really are left to taste. Just like how some might like the rumble of the dynamic driver over the punchy planar.

    I've noticed a similar thing - Depending on the games audio mastering, the better the game handled directional sounds, the easier it was to "hear" the direction the sound came. Some games have very good directional audio, others are mediocre, while others are simply terrible, hot garbage.
    That does not mean though, that my R70X's are equal to the KZ PR-1 PRO's - they're close, but the R70X's seem to make it easier to pinpoint the direction the sound is coming from. I assume that has mostly to do with the frequency response curve of the gear we use. Meaning, the less distortion to the directional audio mastering by the output device, the easier it gets to correctly place sounds / the better the soundstage is.

    I have a pair of HarmonicDyne Zeus headphones, on an expensive chain. On XLR, the Zeus has a pretty wide soundstage, but I also feel that its imaging capabilities kind of blur the line between depth and placement. However if I change to lesser cables, I lose that width and all the instruments sound closer together.
    I think hearing things that appear to be outside your bubble of hearing is more a function of imaging. My Drop HF 5xx had pretty good imaging, but a flat wall of sound soundstage when it came to your typical recording.
    On the Zeus, things like reverb do feel like they're off in the distance, and different instruments are placed in particular areas. My Susvara doesn't have quite this soundstage but it has its imaging feels like you can point to where things are.

The HD25s actually has a nice soundstage for a closed headphone. The X2HR soundstage is just amazing. Especially with movies n TV. With music everything is so spread out. I was thinking to get planars this time around but really tempted to get AKG. I can get 702 new for £120 and used 712pro around the same price. Before I pull my trigger... How would you compare soundstage, imaging, separation, base and are those differences obvious or you have to focus to spot them. For instance, I don't like a Samson SR850 for music anymore because it's shrill and piercing, but for gaming and film, it's quite literally one of the best headphones I've ever used. @@darylusitalo1732 Yeah the Sennheiser 600 series which shares the same design with the 58x have really bad positional sound. With my current headphones DT 1770 Pro, it seems like changing the frequency response via EQ actually changes positional sound. I have them EQed to the Harman Target, but when I change back to its original tuning the positional sound seems to get much better. So I'm wondering if it's actually the headphones or the frequency response, probably both.

    • @HomeStudioBasics
      @HomeStudioBasics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey man been demoing it for a few weeks now. Insane value at that price. I just got done telling someone I probably wouldn't get a Sundara for $350 if I can just get this for $150. It actually doesn't have some of the sibilant issues in other models either + it houses the updated build that I loved so much in the DEVA. I will be comparing with the DEVA as well at some point. I don't have a Sundara here now to directly compare but the Sundara is still a bit warmer sounding from what I remember, while the 400se kind of mimics the sound of the original 400s; crisp and tight, but without the sibilance. The 400s was never *that* sibilant, but the 400i kind of was.
      I think the 400se is a snap purchase honestly and sounds ridiculous for its price. Planars are just a cut above typical dynamics in terms of Timbre and detail, and the 400se is no different. At that price they're basically giving it away. Kind of unbelievable when you're listening to it and think to yourself that it's only $150. Since I've put it on, I literally haven't once touched my HD600 or 58X.
