Michael is 'by far' one of the best instructors I've seen on TH-cam. His ability to verbalize instruction and remain calm/patient with his students is really a credit to his teaching skills. Keep doing what you're doing Michael. You're the reason that I'm a R22 and R44 rated helicopter pilot. I just finished training 6 months ago. It took me a while to get it all done but your videos really helped tons. Anyone wanting to see how it should be done should really subscribe and watch all of Michaels training. Especially the 'pre-flight' vids for R22 and R44. Thanks Michael!
Student likes the grassy area, for some reason that feels safe when trying to learn to hover. The less pressure the better. I can't wait for next video.
Exceptional teaching skills. I feel like I am in the helicopter taking the lesson. Very nice camera work. The student is great telling his thoughts, and you coaching him. You mention corrections needed, but encourage improvement. Also explaining why things are and the student has insight. love the radio calls. Amazing amount of quality information. thanks for posting!
Great to see the same evolution repeated as your skill/comfort level increases. Your learned control/relax shows in the smoothness of the helo movements. Good job. Thanks - Lumpy
I love this series. Great insight into what it might be like to learn. I can't stress enough how valuable it is to see where students make mistakes as well as their accomplishments. Keep it up! Please let Jimmy know how much we appreciate it too.
Doing a lot better in this video with the hovering. I had a lot of trouble hovering, and had to quit after my second lesson. It was a similar experience with learning the twist throttle on motorcycles. I realized I was using my entire arm to input throttle. Once I started using just wrist it was a light bulb moment!
Great video! I'm working on my CFI right now and was having a hard time verbalizing each maneuver. These videos have really helped me out a lot. I look forward to seeing more of your videos.
I'm impressed that your student was able to control the helicopter as well as he did in his 2nd flight lesson! BTW you Sir are a great instructor! Thanks for the video & for giving me a ride.
Looking forward to lesson 3. I noticed you were off the controls ( at least cyclic) several times. He must be doing OK for you to do that. Shows me you have confidence he is learning and more importantly understanding what is actually happening. I am login' this series!!
Reminds me of my first RC heli took me a month of hovering before I could transition to forward flight and back to a hover. Wish I had the dough to do that oh well maybe in a few years when I make more money.
Would suggest getting DCS World for your computer it is free but you have to buy the Huey for it. Digital Combat Simulator makes the actual simulators for the USAF. Everything that he did in this video looks and feels the same on the simulator. Look up DCS Huey on here and check it out. Suggest hydraulic joystick, Throttle or collective, rudder pedals, and TrackIR 5 Pro or Oculas Rift when it comes out. Yes it will cost a little but you can practice as much as you want.
Actually flying for real for me is a lot easier since you have depth perception which you do not have in a simulator. Try driving a car in a game and feel the difference between the two it is the same thing plus you having the feeling of flying for real which you do not have in a sim. The only thing that is harder for real is pulling G's.
What books should a guy start reading in preparation for flight training? Probably schedule some time in a sim to see if there is even any aptitude for flight?
Helicopter flying hand book and which over operating handbook for the aircraft you will be flying, also the FAR/AIM is always good to get a jump start on :)

Can't go wrong with Michael.
Love these instructional vids....my 2nd R44 lesson tomorrow and I'm so excited!

Bringing back some great memories. Thanks for taking the time to film and upload these.
Just watched. Man, I’d rather fly a plane. This seems overwhelming. I know people learn. Good video.

This is so cool Bob. I'm really enjoying these copter lessons.

Very good instructor.....explains everything clearly....excellent.
huge increase from last video. dude is learning

Nice! I"m learning the R22 now. Subscribed!
Really good teacher/instructor.
Great instructor and video!
Good video! I always crab when I'm trying to hover taxi straight. It's my trademark...
I would say more on the private side, but using SCC aircraft
Great video so are you instructing part time at SCC now or you just instructng privately?
Awesome teacher
Looks fun! I really badly want to fly. I'm in the NG and I'm going to try to get an Aviator spot. I'd still love to take lessons though.
you did it?
That looks like so much fun!! and really difficult!

DCS Huey is really fun but flying a legit aircraft is much more different than flying a sim :)

SG .Stewart I like to say that you need 2 things to fly: Eyes and a butt, you can feel what the aircraft is doing lol
LOL yeah that is the biggest thing in real life. I use to have 20/10 vision but now I'm getting older that is starting to go away.
great lesson... I think I have it down... or up.. Jim W
instructor has a lot of patience.
“You’re just over compensating” said every CFI ever
Go Jimmy!
