Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar is a 2024 Indian period drama television series created and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The series is about the lives of tawaifs in the red-light district of Heera Mandi in Lahore during the Indian independence movement against the British Raj. It stars Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Sharmin Segal Mehta and Taha Shah Badussha. The series was released on Netflix on 1 May 2024 to mixed reviews from critics.
Heera Mandi, is a neighbourhood and bazaar located in the Walled City of Lahore. It is specifically known as the red light district of Lahore, Pakistan.
It is located inside the Walled City of Lahore, near the Taxali Gate, and south of the Badshahi Mosque. Heeramandi was a song and dance community based on the tawaif culture during the Mughal period. After, British colonisation, Heeramandi gradually turned into a red light district.
Hira Singh Dogra, a prime minister of the Punjab,during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh thought that Shahi Mohalla in the heart of the city may be used as an economic hub, similar to a bazaar, in addition to housing tawaifs.[6] He established a food grains market in the neighborhood which first became familiar as ‘Hira Singh di Mandi’ (Hira Singh’s market). Heera means diamond in Urdu and is thought to describe the dancing girls of the area. But in fact,the area's name is traditionally ascribed to Heera Singh, son of Dhian Singh Dogra. Dhian Singh was the Prime Minister during Maharaja Ranjit Singh's reign.

Heramandi koi tehzeeb ka izhaar na tha na hay, tuvaaif pehlay bhe aur abb bhe gandagee aur ghalazat ka symbol the aur abb bhe hay ,tehzeeb sekhanay ka kam sirf UP India main hota tha jahan Navab aur unn ke auladain paaee jaye thein Lahore ka uss tehzeeb say duur ka vasta bhe nahe tha. Lahore main sirf Kanjeran hote thein .

Firstly, " Heera Mandi " was name after Ranjeet Singh's Prime Minister Dhan Singh's son Heera Singh. In Ranjit's Singh's period, this location was known as Shahi Mohalla due to Mughal architecture. So, Ranjit Singh changed or gave another name to the Shahi Mohalla, as Heera di Mandi, meaning economic hub of the city due to buying and selling power of the people. Heera means diamond.
