CS Lewsi is probably the most diverse you can get while maintaining a cohesive setting. It's not kitchen sink, because it still has the overall theme of good vs. evil. Aslan is still the main good guy, and never stops being that - there's also rules to how good might defeat evil and vice versa. The white witch (or whoever) is still the main bad girl (tmk anyway, haven't actually read it beyond the first one).

Digimon is probably my favorite franchise example for this trope. It features ideas like classical monsters, angels, demons, gods, dinosaurs, robots, superheroes, toys, etc., while also incorporating references to many different mythologies. Digimon also executes the Fantasy Kitchen Sink trope really well since the theme that holds it all together is digital monsters.

A planned, multi-era series me and my co-author have planned seems to fit this trope. In the medieval era alone, we blend scientific realism and supernatural legend together with god-like beings eluded to be aliens, mythological monsters being prehistorical remnant species, and magic a kind of weird science.

@@phoenixstudios9078 It's still very much in the early stages, but the idea revolves around the branching tree of decedents over the ages, from the 1300's all the way to the future. In each, they will face horrors and discover wonders brought about by an ancient cataclysm during the final days of the Romans.
The villain himself is reflective of this. Virtually immortal by means of possessing poor schlubs, he starts out a crafty schemer only to slowly lose his sanity over the centuries, becoming the monstrous future equivalent of Jack the Ripper.
Now as for the protagonists themselves? Many different walks of life, but all end up getting caught up in the same struggle. Gideon Maddox for example, is just a simple truck courier in the 30's, but ends up getting wrapped up in conspiracy, mob politics, and just plain unexplained insanity.

@@Tracer_Krieg Ah. So the Fantasy Kitchen Sink aspect comes from all of the different mythos that are relevant to the particular time periods that each of your stories takes place in. Interesting 🤔 What are the common threads that tie all of these separate stories together in one larger narrative? Is your villain a consistent character in each of these stories? Or do you have other characters making multiple appearances throughout the saga alongside the villain?

    • @Tracer_Krieg
      @Tracer_Krieg 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@phoenixstudios9078 Each one tells a different take on the central themes: the responsibility of power, the nature of man vs society, and forbidden knowledge.
For example, the answer presented in the Wolf Company series (1300's) would argue that there is some knowledge that should not be learned and that humanity must be allowed to choose its own destiny. Ignorance is safety.
The New Frontier (future) however, would argue that knowledge is merely a tool, and that those with power must use them for the good of humanity and those associated with them. Ignorance is a detriment.
Additionally, certain characters (like the villain) and organizations will appear in one fashion or another in each era. Some do so by being literally immortal, others through their descendants, and a few just through sheer legacy alone.
I will admit, much of this is inspired by classical authors, such as Robert E Howard, Lovecraft, and Robert Heinlein; each who had a different take on nature of humanity and our evolution through technology. Something, I fear, has become lost in today's medium.

My favorite FKS story is the Toaru Series, which is about a secret war between magicians and espers influence the world, all through the eyes of a young boy whose power to counter magic and superpowers makes him a major player in the War between Science and Magic.
Apart from the sci-fi stuff like espers, cyborgs, mecha suits, advanced technology, mad scientists, and the cyberpunk-esque look of Academy City, the series also introduces ninja, fighter maids, superhumans who gained their power from being "based on Jesus' likeness", gods, alternate dimensions, and a character who can banish his enemies into said dimensions by _using the shadow of his right hand_ .
Furthermore the magic system of Toaru takes influence from real-life mythology, religion, and is based off Hermeticism, a branch of magick practiced by Aleister Crowley, the Wickedest Man in the West and his cabal the Golden Dawn.
Aleister is also one of the main characters of the series, serving as a sort of Grandfather of Modern Magic.
And even then my explanation of this amazing series barely scratches the surface of the craziness within the series.

Kitchen Sink world building is easy
    1. Over here is a land ruled by samurai
    2. The great north is prowled by vikings but also undead and they hate each other. The undead enslaved thousand year old giant spiders.
    3. The south is ruled by ninja clans, who compete for sole ruler of the ninja villages.
    4. In the central lands of valleys and, surrounded by mountains, the Knightly kingdoms follow a code of honor and engage in formal duels for their foreign policy
    5. And in all the lands, goblin merchants ply their trade
    6. Underneath the ground in the great under dark, an old god plots revenge against the all powerful sky god that the knights worship. To do so, he must englist the services of ninja turtles who utilize drunken superpowers from magic beer. The heroes learn that their weakness is unicorns who bear a mystical and more ancient power that even the sky god can't comprehend.
    7. When the quest is completed, a fire god from space intevenes, usurping the sky god's throne. His fireling worshippers arise from some other place underground and they want to wage a crusade of flame (a burning crusade, if you will) upon the landscape. The samurai and the vikings must badn together with the knights, or else they'll be face melted.
    8. In the meantime, some knights decide to quit and become pirates instead, because their code of honor didn't bind them to knighthood after all for plot reasons. There's a carribean-themed archipelago across an ocean for them to hang out in, because why not.
    9. The ninja realize that they can become more powerful if they combine knight and ninja magic togther. This makes them into ninja-knights and the advantage of that is that they get to now wear power armor. However, there's no reason to detail how this might disrupt the other ninja clans.
    10. Jim Bob is the main character, and he adventures through all these lands, trying to right wrongs and absorbing moral lessons along the way that lead to his character growth.
Just keep changing the rules. Never dwell on any particular one except the characters, since they're the reader's plot vehicle. That's a kitchen sink world. :)

I've been doing a lot of planning for a series that I think falls into this genre--I didn't realize there was an official name for it until now.
The story I'm writing takes place in a world that has been taken over by a corrupt, corporate-controlled country--a worldwide regime where your only freedom is the choice to work for a despotic maniac or be left out on the street to die. It centers around a young soldier who runs away from his militia due to disillusionment, meets other outcasts like him, and forms his own freedom fighting organization. It borrows elements from cyberpunk, Japanese folklore, Norse mythology, magical girls, pirate fiction, samurai fiction, and military sci-fi, but is primarily a coming-of-age story with elements of political thriller and science fiction--think "Metal Gear Solid meets Stand By Me".

If you’re accepting video requests, I think an interesting writing trope would be twin siblings. You can do both identical like Fred and George from Harry Potter, and polar opposites like Luke and Leia from Star Wars if you want.
    Like that idea?

    • @phoenixstudios9078
      @phoenixstudios9078  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

What you're talking about isn't necessarily a twin trope. But it's called "Those Two Guys" and good examples of those are Timon and Pumbaa, Fred and George Weasley, R2-D2 and C-3PO, and Pintel and Raghetti.

I actually do have a universe that pretty much falls into this. Funny thing is before i found out about this trope, i described my universe as suffering from "Superhero Syndrome" which doesn't sound too off now that i think about it.
My universe doesn't start out as a Fantasy Kitchen Sink but rather expands and evolves into one. It basically goes from robots and humans fighting crime to fighting for the fate of Earth in an all out galactic war
Now if i were to describe it with it's inspirations, i would say "it's Transformers, G.I Joe, Star Wars, Mass Effect, Halo, Vanquish, Star Fox, Overwatch, Titanfall, Metal Gear, Gundam, Macross, Top Gun, Armoured Core, Megas XLR, Power Rangers, My Life as a Teenage Robot, Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force Go, Sym-Bionic Titan, GaoGaiGar, Gurren Lagann, Pacific Rim, Ratchet and Clank, Knight Rider, Airwolf, The A Team, SWAT Kats, Mega Man, Max Steel, Motorcity, Ben 10, Generator Rex, Kamen Rider, Ultraman and many more all in one".
Although it doesn't have stuff like deities, time travel, the multiverse, magic, etc. I think there's enough to call my universe a Fantasy Kitchen Sink.
Now if that sounds a bit overwhelming to you, don't worry because what i have is tamed (at least that's what i think) compared to what Marvel and DC have. I try to keep things simple without making this world feel bare bones. Not too convoluted but not too shallow
