I love the colour you've painted your walls. That grey is so restful.
Thank you lovely! I have such strong, beautiful light in this room it can take the darker colour......very cosy in winter......and fresh in the summer. 😊
@@WhatVivididnext Absolutely, a colour that modulates through the seasons. Really enoyed the book chat, Vivi - really informative.
I will certainly be more observant when I purchase second hand books. Thank you for explaining what to look for and what not to buy.
Cheers lovely. 😊
Vivi it's so lovely to see your passion for your books and the care you give them. I'm just like you... I like a physical book. So many people use a kindle... def not my thing. You can't beat the feel and smell of a real book. Sending love as always xxxx
Hear, hear! 😊
I love home made soup. Nothing wrong with soup every day. That’s is usually my lunch. Love all your meals and they have given me some great ideas.
What a wealth of niche knowledge! I have a new appreciation for my modest sentimental stash. Thanks, Vivi.
My pleasure lovely. 😊
Really enjoyed this video….very helpful. Good luck with it Vivi
Thank you lovely. 😊

Cheers lovely. 😊
Really interesting video. Thank you.
My pleasure. 😊
Very helpful and informative video, enjoy those beers Vivi
Nothing worse than sticky bits. 😅 I hate stickers on books.
Lovely informative book cleaning video. Very helpful as i have often wondered if there was a way of doing it.
If it rains, this will be my weekend job. Otherwise, i will be in the garden 😂😂😂 xx
Yay....whatever the weather that will be a fab weekend! Enjoy lovely. 😊
Good afternoon ,and GOOD for you ! Yes! Book cleaning , the dreaded chore ! I need to do that too . Right . alcohol works a treat on glue residue
And I have found it also works on glue-y glass .I also did some house cleaning , it’s a humid and Thunder-y day here great for indoor chores.
I do hope you treated yourself to those beers after your hard work ! Thank you . This was fun as well as informative !!
❤ love , Marilyn xx
Yikes....cleaning/chores in humidity.......good luck!
@@WhatVivididnext right ?! When the urge strikes I had better answer !! Otherwise…..
Great video Vivi, I have a rather large library of antiquarian cookery books, so will use some of your hints and tips to start cleaning and conserving them. Most of the precious books are in a glass fronted bookcase to prevent too much dust settling on them. Take care Xx
Oooooh, yay for a glass fronted case.....I love that. 😊
Very interesting. You deserve a beer or two for the work involved :)
Hahaha.....I did have a wee sip! 😉
would love a video about your beginnings and more experiences in the book trade. My passion!
Cheers lovely. 😊
Thanks Vivi. Puppy Faye and I enjoyed your video. I am dog sitting tonight. I will send you a clip soon. Appreciate everything you do. Such a clever girl. 🌟❤️
Awwww, lovely puppy cuddles! Please give her a tunny rub from me. 💖
Hi Viv, I use a fine mist of water on a soft microfibre cloth to clean my piano, but I wouldn’t use a cotton cloth or paper towel after. It would scratch it. The cloth is just damp enough to pick up dust but dry enough not to need drying afterwards. This could work for book jackets?
My books are definitely going to get a clean in the next few weeks as we have got to do some renovations/decorating in that room. Hate to think how long it is since they were last thoroughly cleaned!!!!
Have fun. 😊
Hey - we have a box set of the first four hardback, signed Harry Potter books, won in a company raffle - kept in the glass case, whereas the books we bought originally are also in a glass bookcase. The (grown up) kids will get them eventually, more for the love of the Harry Potter books and films than any value (or none).
Fascinating Vivi… who would’ve thought there’s a right way to hoover a book 😳 I don’t have many books so it won’t take long to give them a thorough inspection 😁 Hope you enjoyed handling all your precious books and drinking your well deserved beers🍺
It was lovely to handle and remember old favourites. 😊
I hoover books too, but I draw the hoover nozzle from the edge of the book towards the spine, so as not to dogear the tips of the cover. I'll dust with a soft cloth, but most of the time they need a just-damp cloth to take off the dust the hoover and dry cloth leaves behind. Then they have to be left to air before they're put back A tad OCD, I know ..., but it works. In various companies in the past, sometimes old documents or books would have to be accessed, sometimes from boxes stored in those massive warehouses (think Raiders of the Lost Ark) miles from the office. Sometimes the papers or books would be infected with those tiny mites - disgusting. No moisture- or temperature-controlled facilities then - just endless, heavy-duty shelving and bankers' boxes.
I would recommend drawing the hoover nozzle AWAY from the spine else you risk pushing dust into the head tape.
Thank you for making this video. 🤗It was very helpful and interesting. I did find out new things.
Yay, that's great. Thank you. 😊
I've used lemon or orange essential oils (my degreasers of choice) to remove sticker residue but don't know how they'd fare on paper. I admire your dedication Vivi!
And for removing pencil marks, kneaded erasers are even more gentle. You don't have to rub, you can just mould them to the size/shape needed and press them onto the graphite and it lifts.
Lovely! Joyous! Xxx thank you xxx
Thank you lovely. 😊
I purchase a beautiful book copy of The Count of Monte Cristo months ago with a beautiful fabric cover only to find a horrible sticky dark mark under the label on the back of the book, it's a brand new copy from Waterstones so sad. Lovely video Vivi, thank you for sharing your cleaning tips x
Argh.....it does my nut that bookshops insist on using sticky labels!
@@WhatVivididnext Yep it's not good grrrrr. I love my books x
Very interesting video looking fwd to some more cleaning tips xx
Fascinating video Vivi, really enjoyed all the tips and tricks. 😊 when I’ve had a particularly stubborn sticker I have used a hair dryer on a gentle heat to help warm the adhesive which has made it a bit easier to remove. Must go and look at the tops of my books now………😳 Now where did I put that hoover attachment! 🤔 xx
Hahaha...happy hoovering lovely. 😉
Wish Our Lives Could Have “A Gradience of Suck”! 🤣 Thank You For This Video Vivi!🥰
Hahahaha, cheers lovely. 😉
Very informative video, thanks so much x
My pleasure. 😊
Very informative and inþeresting Viv.I will add clean books and bookshelves to my to do list. Enjoy the beer!
Thanks Vivi! 📚🥰
We have over 6,000 books, 😂ours will be the books that haven't been cleaned for over 40 years I'm afraid 😂 We do quickly vacuum the tops occasionally that's if there aren't two rows of books on a shelf and none laid on top. We're non smokers so just dusty. 😊
Hi, I'm new to your channel and have been catching up with some of your old playlists. Really enjoyed 'A postcard from...' and wondered if you are still considering a move to Swanage? As a fellow Londoner, relocating to the seaside is something I research every now and then, but then there is the transport, good healthcare and 'buzz' of London...
Ach, yes, all those questions buzz around my head too! Swanage is pretty good on most things.....otherwise Poole isn't tooooooo far away for everything else.
Ps.......sorry, I forgot to say 'welcome'!!! 😊
I really enjoyed this video! My books are a bit of a mess, but now I’m motivated to look after them. XXXX
Yay! Enjoy. 😊
👍👍👍
Who knew how interesting cleaning books would be 🧡🙂🧡
I'm looking at my bookshelf and feeling very guilty, thanks for the prompt Vivi, the book clean is long overdue. Don't want to encourage the microscopic Vashta Nerada (the shadows that melt the flesh) to swarm, those carnivorous beings that live in paper are found on most planets including this one. Oh dear, sorry, I need my medication. All the best chuckles.
Hahaha...cheers lovely. 😊
Thanks for the info on companies selling conservation items.
I remember times every home had bookshelves, some small, some very large....
Seems the younger generation doens´t have this anymore, many like some kind of minimalism...less work they say....
I can understand, but that´s not me, i like to read the "old fashion" way...feels more cosy....
Hear, hear! 😊
Thanks for this - so interesting 🙂
Looks like I had better dust my bookshelves Vivi!!!
😉
Offer your services to people who might not want their cleaners to be the ones keeping their books in good order. A few of those jobs a year might provide some trips away from home, all expenses paid, including accommodation (and meals ...) and a bit of cash on top.
Have u thought about selling the most precious books now before the move to eliminate the risk of damaging them or something during ur move ¿ books are the hardest thing to move in my opinion. So heavy 😅
It would take too long......it will be a full-time job that I'm looking forward to in my retirement days. 😊
Good to know about books video
Thank you, that was really interesting. Shame you didn't make it a few weeks ago when I was sending off some of my books to Ziffit and a charity 😂. I only have one "valuable" book. It was worth about £85 recently, but then a publisher decided to reissue it and the value plummeted. Argh!
Argh indeed! 😥
That was a fair bit of work. Did you really finish it in one day?
What would also interest me: How many years did you work in your bookstore?
Thank you for this really interesting and educational video.
Big hug Claudia 😊😊😊
Thank you lovely.......it ended up being a two day job (because of making the video). I worked there as a part-timer between acting jobs for 10 years......then full time as the manager for 9 years (eventually becoming director). I loved it!
@@WhatVivididnext Thank you for the fast answer. Another question, but really the last one: Why did you stop?
@@claudiaebert7842 The Boxing Day tsunami.........I wanted to help the children......so I trained as a nurse....
I don’t think they’d be filthy if someone would be using them instead of letting them to just sitting on a shelf… I know the books that I have, of which there are many, get a good look through and wipe down every few months…they are my prize possessions….old or not 😊
It get's a bit harder to use and handle them every few months though, if you're 90 and have thousands of them!
Hello, what is the plastic covering you use to protect dust jackets called? And where did you purchase it? And thanks for your tips!
Thanks!
It's called 'Glassine'. I can't remember the name of our supplier, sorry, but there are probably lots on-line.
I've never seen those plastic covers before. It seems very useful. Interesting. Thank you.
💖💖💖
My local library has twice a year books sales. $1 per hard cover .25 per paperback Books make me happy 😊
Yay! 😊
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
A lot of them come from damp conditions - pretty rank.
Hi lovely❤❤
Hello 😊
Please help I have yellow marks on my books. Do any of you have any solution? I guess its humidity marks😔😔😔😔
Hmmm....are the marks on the pages? It may be what we call 'foxing'......it's hard to get rid of.....a professional job and expensive!
Enjoy a beer or four...... 🍺🍺
Hahaha....I was very restrained and kept it to three. 😉
I have JK Rowling 1st edition "The Christmas Pig." Tried my best to get an autograph for my grandson. She's very "busy"! I have contacts on 5 continents and unable to connect.
