I watched the girl's beforehand and can I just say I'm impressed. Despite them being messy and chaotic, they actually bothered to clean and try to restore order on the FIRST day.
It would be cool to see this across different countries and cultures. That would help answer the question of whether this is a result of nature or nurture
This was the most horrifying documentary I've ever seen. Every psychology class ever should be made to watch both parts of this. One thing I'd like to point out is how the boys were congratulated by their parents, even though they had seen everything that was done, and the girls parents were just glad they were back and safe. Striking.
This comment... Gold. I believe exactly the same thing. Boys and girls are NOT raised the same way by many parents. Boys are not nurtured enough, while girls are in a way, overprotected. Many Boys lack boundaries because their parents fail to teach them properly about them. The parents did not scold the boys because in a way, being destructive is what a boy is expected to be. Utterly shocking.
I do like the self-reflection of one of the boys at the end of the first day - "when we came into this house, we never expected it to be like this, but I'm really sad we trashed it so badly - we were trying to explore everything at once and got too carried away in ourselves."
a bunch of 12 year olds all walk into a house and not one of them shuts the front door. yep. this is going exactly where i thought it would go and we are not even 2 minutes in. brilliant.
I feel so bad for Sim, he was one of the best behaved but pretty much kicked out of the group as the outcast. Also notice how the quiet boys room was a tad bit cleaner than the loud boys room.
Just finished watching the girl's version and it was very interesting to see the differences. The girls actually showered, cooked and cleaned, but were also bent on never letting each other sleep. The boys were immediately set out on authority and pecking order while the girls had no desire to hold authority over each other, but loved to gossip and bring attention to themselves. The boys weren't intentionally callous or cruel but they never noticed or cared for long when they did, while the girls where consciously mean and cutting but were quick to comfort and apologize. Neither boys or girls held grudges for long, but boys did seem much less sympathetic to each other and wanting punishment while the girls kinda huddled after a fight. The girls= emotionally mean. The guys=physically aggressive. I was actually surprised it was the boys who ostracized one from the group and broke into factions against each other. Overall, girls would probably survive longer just on the basis of hygiene, food and not beating each other up x'D
It's also interesting how they treated the most troublesome child of their group. Girls being mean and cutting but still staying together with her in the end while boys tried to get the authority to make Michael calm down. Also dividing into grous vs. staying together. And girls being way more touchy with each other than boys. And boys being way more resilient to the bullying when some girls quit early for the same reason.
The parents reactions are the same reactions some pet parents have with their puppies like "omg awe you dug a hole, youre not supposed to do that but so cute! good job!!" and is how they end up having behavioural issues in the future🙄 Itd be interesting to see them do another video together or how theyve turned out since growing up
Yes i was shocked too. Some of the parets really looked disappointed or shocked and there are the parents smiling "ow look at that how did you do it" i would go as far and say that was one of the loud kids parent.
Did they not realize they’re going to be adults in 10 years? They’re the most bad behavior enabling parents I’ve ever seen. No visceral reaction to seeing what they’ve done so I assume this is normal in their family??
Damn this is literally lord of the flies. George is Ralph, Michael is Jack, Sim is Piggy. They were chaotic at first, then started to focus on “survival” after a little bit until things just spiral into chaos. They split into 2 groups and some end up “betraying”
Can we have more of these. You could go with, American version, African, European, Canadian etc... I swear people will watch it. In fact you could market it like an actual reality show. Make a series.
Manu Shapopi this was filmed in 2002 so I'd imagine the outcome would be different if they did it now, they'd all just be on there phone and it would be boring.
I quite like George, he was sweet and kind toward the outcasts and always tried to respect the boys. Although his efforts were a bit off, his heart was in the right place. He’s so adorable🥰💢
Did u see where he just walked by the kid on the bike and he kicked Michael, n he just gave him the stank eye n kept moving.. of course he had no chance in a fight with that kid, he probably knew that!
I'm amazed that their behavior devolved in the presence of the cameraman...but I suppose the power the group dynamic is powerful. Also, its amazing how spot on Lord of the Flies got it. I would really like to see an interview of the same boys years later and how they remember this experience and maybe if there were lasting effects....
Each one of those boys should have been made to march right back into that house and clean every last lick of scrap and then repaint it. That was a disgusting display. As a father, I would have marched MY son right back in there to clean up. ALSO, they actually WATCHED this horror and didn't ream their kids butts for treating each other like that? wow... what failures. And I'm a 6th grade teacher and I can tell you something........
I think Robert was probably the most well balanced boy of the group. He was right to refuse to continue with the destruction of the house and the out of bounds behaviour of most of the other boys. Good kid!
i mean atleast they tried to clean the house. but tho the girls are def better. I always wonder why , male toilets at school is dirtier than girls one,i mean that's what teacher is complaining about. Boy is just too energetic and likes to destroy all the things in the god dam world! Haizzz, why is my own gender doing it
Probably somewhat similar. We Americans don't really develop the traits unique to us until later. Also leader selection would probably have been more turbulent but the leader would have been respected way more.
See, what I'm trying to figure out is this: In the documentary, we see George often acting selflessly, usually taking on a more noble role for the benefit of those that were weaker. But did the boys choose him because they recognized him as a natural leader, or did the boys choose George arbitrarily, and then he happened to rise to the occasion? Or maybe it was a bit of both...
i definitly think it was a mix of both. they probably sensed that he was a more reasonable and sympathetic character, which he proved to be true, pumped by the confidence he gain form the others trusting him and recognizing him as a leader. It would be very interesting to see how he would have behaved if the guys hadn't voted him as the "chef"
The fact that they don’t like their own mess yet don’t bother to clean it up and then aren’t made to clean anything up in the end and their parents tell them “good job” is exactly why so many women end up with selfish man child husbands they have to divorce.
Oh right, the 50% of the human race that exists for the last 300.000 year, decided that in the last 60 years they suddenly are strong independent women! This just really shows the reality of nature. The boys getting in packs, the dominance, the backstabbing. This was the most interesting 40 minutes I've spent on TH-cam
Me too, I found it interesting how the boys kind of took on the role of a father knows best type of character. They were all trying to discipline and police each other, while the girls were mostly more nurturing towards each other, when they weren't underhandedly trying to manipulate each other
I know right.. In my experience it tends to just happen automatically.. In some groups of girls everyone kinda knows who the leader is. they just don't say it out loud 🙂
Me too. Sherry took on that nurturing role and the girls had a problem with her taking on that leader “mother” figure role. While the boys had little to no issues accepting an authority in place. We can also see this in other groups like frat houses and sororities, which is interesting
I've heard of other experiments with only men or only women having to survive on an island (I can't remember exactly) and also there, the men first had to decide a leader and from then on they could work together, while the women were first setting up camp and doing everything that needed to be done, before there were social issues.
So the girls made accidental messes, then worked together to clean them up, had petty fights with water and paint that could only be stopped by the peacekeeper kid, locked themselves in the bathroom a lot to hide and make points when they felt bad, kept each-other up all night, but in general fixed their relationships on their own and made up when they fought. The boys trashed the house, felt instant regret but couldn't easily clean everything, and gave up, nearly started intentionally torturing small animals, and, instead of eating real food, ate mostly sugar until they created a chain based on who would get the blame for messes and problems and had to talk with a counselor. All-in-all I think the girls cared a bit more for how others felt, but made more decisions based on revenge, and the boys cared a bit more for who would be in charge and who would be at the bottom of the society, cleaning up and taking blame.
I think the girls were "Damn it, see what you've done? You made a huge mess and now we all have to clean it up." And the boys were "He started it! NOT IT!"
There is some deep seated psychological stuff happening in this experiment. Some of those kids were showing legit stress responses. Like when Michael was just screaming repeatedly? He was overstimulated and had no outlet for his emotions. Same with him beating stuff with a stick. He couldn’t come down from everything he was feeling. I mean...this was wild. I expected there to be chaos. They’re children. But I didn’t expect them to be almost unable to form a liveable environment. The lack of effort and disregard is shocking.
@@JenWithThePen It's been shown that sugar-high is not a thing. The point was that they would gravitate towards easier and unhealthy choices without guidance.

This was the most horrifying documentary I've ever seen. Every psychology class ever should be made to watch both parts of this. One thing I'd like to point out is how the boys were congratulated by their parents, even though they had seen everything that was done, and the girls parents were just glad they were back and safe. Striking.
What??
This comment... Gold. I believe exactly the same thing. Boys and girls are NOT raised the same way by many parents. Boys are not nurtured enough, while girls are in a way, overprotected. Many Boys lack boundaries because their parents fail to teach them properly about them. The parents did not scold the boys because in a way, being destructive is what a boy is expected to be. Utterly shocking.

Yes. George saw Sim was quiet and had trouble fitting in and tried to help him feel included. Sensitive boy.
You're right!
mekalunia The girls divided and then came together while the boys became more and more divided.
Also the girls cleaned for the sake of decency and expectations while the boys cleaned out of necessity or fairness or to please the group.

In the documentary, we see George often acting selflessly, usually taking on a more noble role for the benefit of those that were weaker. But did the boys choose him because they recognized him as a natural leader, or did the boys choose George arbitrarily, and then he happened to rise to the occasion? Or maybe it was a bit of both...
Well either way it worked out, I think he was a good influence on the others
God knows
Also wondering this. It was so early on. Did they just sense it?
i definitly think it was a mix of both. they probably sensed that he was a more reasonable and sympathetic character, which he proved to be true, pumped by the confidence he gain form the others trusting him and recognizing him as a leader.

There is some deep seated psychological stuff happening in this experiment. Some of those kids were showing legit stress responses. Like when Michael was just screaming repeatedly?
