I have not tried this yet but Ive been told to use cheap paper plates drill a hole in the middle cut a slit and slip it around the tree. I guess i will keep weeds and grass from growing around the trees and help keep in the ground moisture.
Hey Phil you have to stay after those weeds or they will take over. I’m having to spray around my place all the time. Really good idea adding the funnel. Take care brother
keep up with the weeds last year it was so wet out in our fields we lost the whole crop (300+) due to overgrown grass/weeds/rain. but this year we'll go out in rain snow or sleet to manage them. Love the funnel idea on the sprayer
10 acres of weeds & trees. In your first year you did fantastic with your wood tree mulch. Smothering out all those nasty weeds ! Great Idea. Shading the soil from the intense heat ! Also retaining water in the soil during those dry spells. Your a real Organic Tree farmer. And in the process feeding the trees with nutrients as the wood chips decompose over time ! How can you go wrong, your gonna be a successful tree farmer. It's only early Spring, a second layer of wood chip is only going to continue to aid in the health of your trees . With less and less effort and more success. Save money and time, go Organic. It's the wave of the future, if we have any future at all.
I’ve wondered the same.... do the weeds help the seedling or hurt their vigor. Interesting that you find that the weeds help retain moisture. I’ve thought that might be the case but the weeds are also competing for moisture with the seedling. I have noticed that the deer seem to nip my seedling more when there are no weeds to help camouflage them.
You need to mark it with a reflective stake , make it easier to spot em.
The funnel trick is a great idea!
Thanks!
Hey Phil,. Congrats on 2k. Farm is looking good
Thanks 👍 Have a great weekend

that's a new one to me. Might be worth a try.

Weed control is challenging. We struggle with them in our hay fields as well, some years worse then others. Good little invention you have there!
haha. I could buy a drift shield for the sprayer for about $30, but a $3 funnel works just fine! Thanks for watching

Sorry to hear that. We lost many to the string trimmer and mower last year too, but lost many more to the drought
If you can put up with sheep, Shropshire sheep do a fantastic job of keeping the grass and weeds under control and don't touch the trees.
That might be tough for us. We don't live there and sometimes only get out there once every two weeks.
Have you had personal experience running shropshires among your trees? Do you know for certain they will not eat on the trees?

I also wonder if a bail or 2 or 3 of hey/straw will help keep the weeds down might be easier to lay out instead of mulch
maybe, but that's something else I'd have to buy. I get these wood chips for free
My neighbor puts horse/cow poop around his fence post no weeds grow through it wonder if that would work around the trees?
What are you using for a preemerger ?
I haven't done any preemergent
How far apart did you plant we have 755 coning this spring in Illinois 1st time tree. Planting thinking 8'x5' apart
Our rows are 8'on center. We've tried 6 and 7 ft spacing. Our mower won't fit between trees at 6'.
We find the weeds keep the moisture up for the first years
No issues with mold or fungus?

I would of mowed over all those trees and wouldn't of had anything left to spray. Good thing you have an eye for them.
its not hard to miss some of these little guys, that's for sure.
