  • The Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), established by the Manchus, expanded China's territory to its greatest extent and fostered cultural and economic prosperity. However, internal corruption, population pressure, and resistance to modernization weakened the regime. The Opium Wars (1839-1842, 1856-1860) and subsequent unequal treaties eroded Qing sovereignty. The Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864) and other uprisings further destabilized the dynasty. Efforts at reform, like the Self-Strengthening Movement and Hundred Days' Reform, failed to prevent decline. The 1911 Revolution culminated in the abdication of the last emperor, Puyi, in 1912, ending over two millennia of imperial rule in China.
