If you love the mountains and the ocean you should tell John to take a posting in Hawai'i. You look behind you and beautiful green mountains, and look in front at gorgeous blue ocean. Best of both worlds!
I think it is really cool that you get to choose your paint colors, and to paint. I taught in the Bay Area, and could decorate how I pleased but not paint. I am retired now, but still tutoring kids with IEPs. SO love the work, and love my students to pieces. We have fun navigating through the year, and summer (Only had one student this summer!) I look forward to your vlogs...just found you! I teach also, online, and work with adults as a coach, so life is super fun. Still love to support you all though!

I am moving to 6th grade ELA. I will be teaching Grammar & Writing. I have only ever taught 2nd and 3rd but I am so excited to prep and plan only one subject. I feel like I am not a strong writing teacher - mostly because I didn’t have time but I am looking forward to growing as a teacher this year. Also I will have my own daughter in my last period. ❤️

E we have never needed to, been expected to, been ALLOWED to even put anything on the walls that isn’t school Board approved. We would get in so much trouble! Why do you guys need to do all of this yourself? It’s crazy what you guys spend money on and need to buy for your classrooms. I feel for you guys!
Things like painting a classroom are optional and a lot of schools in the US won’t allow you to (but some do). But unfortunately most public schools in the US don’t provide funding for a lot of the tools/resources that teachers need to teach and engage students, which is a big part of why teachers have to spend so much out of pocket.
We don't NEED to do it, we WANT to do it. If I'm spending 8 hours a day in a room, possibly for many years to come, and I have the means to decorate it however I want, I'm gonna do that. Teaching in a bare-bones concrete box would be so unpleasant. Most of the time, at least the places I've taught. the actual necessities for teaching are provided by the school.

LOVE the colors you chose to paint the walls! It looks so good! Our district (Charlotte NC) uses Envision Math too. It’s alright. I taught literacy only last year so this year will be my second time teaching it to 2nd graders!! I would say use a lot of hands on supplemental materials to help your students learn the content!! Can’t wait to see your classroom come together!
We use Envision. It's very wordy, lots of word problems. The first grade teachers said they START with word problems. In 2nd grade, we rearrange a lot of the chapters- WHY do they teach adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers BEFORE covering place value??? I like that it has many different strategies, but then the students are tested on the strategies rather than actually adding/subtracting. So we remake or adjust all of the tests too. I really like the lesson videos included online.
We use it too and I love some of it but HATE the layout. We have to jump around a lot too. I was 3rd grade last year but 2nd grade this year and I know it will be so much jumping around. Literally having to go from book 1 to book 2 on the same 3 week curriculum block we do. I supplement LOTS with TPT or SuperTeacher
We used envisions up until 2 years ago. I’ve only ever taught the 2nd grade version. I liked it. I wish I could take the best parts of envisions and our new program (I-Ready) and make one super program. My youngest was in first grade last year so I did see some of the first grade stuff when he would bring it home, he loved doing it. I’ve been blessed with 3 children who do really well in school so I don’t know how the first grade program would be for a student who struggles. From what I understand they have added a lot of new online components since we used it. I hope that helps. I love the colors you painted your room. I also love all your plants. I wish I had never had my kids in envision they had it in our schools from kindergarten and up worst mistake I ever made my son is now so so behind however I do think it’s great for 9th and up anything below not a fan

And we have lots of cool hiking trails when the temp is nice. CCSD could be better (former teacher here) but you're at a great school and I am so happy for you!

Elementary isn't any better. It moves too fast and the wording is confusing for students.
