  • A vintage Aurora 88 piston filler fountain pen with a 18k G/F cap and a Aurora 585 gold nib. This pen was made in Italy circa 1946 and was made to compete with the Parker 51. A lovely writer.

    Beautiful pen, a real bestseller in its times: more than two millions of them were sold. Similar to the Parker 51 in appearance, it was much more advanced technologically, with its brass piston filling mechanism. Thanks, Stef, brilliant job as usual!

      I disagree on the 88 being more advanced, I prefer the piston filler over the vac filler on the 51 but the 51 was an engineering marvel, the advanced plastics which are near impervious to damage from ink, UV and shrinkage (88 was ebonite and celluloid, old materials for pen manufacture) the design of the hooded nib and feed, the engineering which went into the feed which was designed counter the effects of flying with a fountain pen, the clutch based slip cap..........Piston fillers had been in use my Pelikan on a mass produced scale since the 1930s.

    Superb pens, I have only one which I need to remedy with more vintage 88s. It is a mint and unused 88P with Fiat branded metal box and all matching serialised paperwork. It is gorgeous but my grail vintage 88 is a mint 88 Nikaregenta.
    Nice work on the restoration.

    This is one vote for the new opening and for the new approach (before & after). And the refurbished pen IS a gorgeous unit.

    At first I thought it was a “Frankenstein” pen. The discoloration on the end threw me off. As always though, you brought it back to life. It’s a real beautiful pen now. Thanks again for sharing this with us.

    Surprising that the current gen Aurora 88 hasn’t preserved its ‘Parker 51’ gene and it costs thrice of current gen Parker 51 (Gold nib version)..

    Aloha Stef! Another beautiful pen, but I can already tell it's a bit beyond my budget! I meant to ask, what ink are you using for the writing samples? Keep up the great work in restoring these beauties. Mahalo from Kauai, Hawaii. Thomas

      @penkino1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Thomas, it depends on your budget ? You maybe surprised. I use my own mix of Parker Quink. Thanks for watching.

      @@penkino1 Aloha Stef! Thanks for the personal reply. My comment regarding budget was mostly about this pen knowing that vintage Aurora usually command a premium price, not really something I am looking at for now. I would be happy with a dependable, user grade pen. I have been focusing on mostly cartridge/converter type pens from the not so vintage 70s or so, mostly Japanese, but finding them to be too fine for my current taste. I just watched your latest haul and any of the Parker's would fit the bill as my next foray into "more vintage" pens!? Feel free to message me if you have anything you are currently trying to sell. Thanks also for the ink information. I thought it looked to be too dark to be a blue-black, but not quite black. At one point during my ink exploration, I was on a blue-black kick, but found many to be too light for my taste. Diamine 1864 Blue-Black is dark enough to satisfy me, but am always on the look out for any other blue-blacks that are on the darker side. Mahalo for your time. Thomas

    What do you know of these discolour caps and barrels? I’m my days we only had to put up with ware on matte finishes. It’s true, it’s down to use, acid content in sweat etc. Have I told you about the Parker salesman who could remove gold plating from pens? He had the opposite of the Midas effect! It was amazing to watch, and see the effect on his hands!

      I believe it is the ebonite that changes colur due to oxidation, it can bee seen on lots of hard rubber pens. Thanks.

      @@penkino1 I am wondering if this lovely pen has got a new home yet? and if not, what would be the price for it.
