  • I am going to walk you through my journal of making this model train tunnel for my Christmas Village and my train is an O gauge Polar Express Train set.
    01:07 - Measurement of Tunnel
    01:51 - Planning/Blueprint
05:07 - Tunnel Entrance Brick Design
    05:31 - Cutting Board
22:50 - Drawing of Brick Design
27:59 - Cutting of Tunnel Entrance
31:34 - Cut out and Scrap Pieces for Inside Support Pole
34:09 - Glue Inside Pole to Side Board (WOOD GLUE)
37:28 - Glue Side Boards to Top Board
38:26 - Apply Brick Design to Tunnel Entrances
46:06 - Apply Brick Pattern to Side Boards
47:48 - Painting of Tunnel Entrance
54:05 - Glue Entrances to Tunnel (Make sure your paint is dry)
    55:31 - Painting of Sides
    56:16 - Making Stairs
    59:30 - Painting of Stairs
    01:01:21 - Final Product
01:02:31 - Test Drive with Train
    01:03:48 - Tunnel on Bookshelf
The top of the tunnel can use as a display platform for my christmas village houses and figurines. The measurements of this tunnel fits perfectly on my bookshelf. So if I have to put my village away after Christmas, this train tunnel would not be a storage problem because it will just fit in the bookshelf.
As you can see in the video I make a stair way from the top platform to the bottom of the tunnel so the villagers can go up and down if they ever come alive.
I made this tunnel with a 2ft by 4ft styrofoam board. The board is an insulation board that you can easily buy from Home Depot.
The tunnel works very well with my Christmas Village and train layout. With some decoration, this tunnel will shine.

You inspired me to make a tunnel for my village. I used a box that contained my 3 foot Christmas tree, which I cut to size. I glued doll house brick pattern paper on the box which gave it a very authentic brick look.

Very well done. Looks good and I like that it can support additional structures.

I would put lighter structure on top, I wish I have the 2 inch board on top to make it more sturdy.

Hi I found your video to be very useful. I bought the Lionel Polar Express train set and Just wondering how the quality of the train is. Is it nicely built and sturdy? I saw a lot of negative reviews of the train set itself and wanted to ask you since I see you have the same one

The train locomotive (train engine) is super strong. It is mostly metal. the train carts are plastic but that is okay. The only thing I would change for these set is the way they connect. Sometimes they get disconnected if I go super fast on the track. Some times the wheels will go off from the track alignment so it lost power. Other than those two issues, it is pretty fun and it looks great around the christmas tree.
