Pankaj I had the same doubt while buying Brezza because Maruti offered me alloy option for spare if i paid extra so I asked the Maruti Sales person if there is difference in weight between alloy or rim, he told me both weigh same, and dekha jaye to it makes sense also to give the spare wheel of same weight otherwise it can cause imbalance of the car.
In commuter cars this is true.. but in performance cars they really work on making it lighter.. but tgat increases cost significantly too....

alloy has to compensate by adding more metal otherwise rim will be weak. Steel rim is strong and cheap.
