Varanasi is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh dating to the 11th century B.C. Regarded as the spiritual capital of India, the city draws Hindu pilgrims who bathe in the Ganges River’s sacred waters and perform funeral rites. Along the city's winding streets are some 2,000 temples, including Kashi Vishwanath, the “Golden Temple,” dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.
On 13 December 2021,the landmark project of Shri Kashi Vishwanath Corridor was inaugurated by PM of India and Member of Parliament of Varanasi Shree Narendra Modi The project of Corridor added to spiritual vibrancy of Kasi. The Corridor connected many Ghats of Varanasi (most famous being the Dashashwamedh Ghat) to the iconic temple of Kasi Vishwanath.
Tourism is Varanasi's second most important industry. Domestic tourists most commonly visit for religious purposes while foreign tourists visit for ghats along River Ganges and Sarnath. Most domestic tourists are from Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, and other parts of Uttar Pradesh, while the majority of foreign tourists are from Sri Lanka and Japan. The peak tourist season falls between October and March.[141] In total, there are around 12,000 beds available in the city, of which about one half are in inexpensive budget hotels and one third in dharamsalas. Overall, Varanasi's tourist infrastructure is not well developed.
The Vande Bharat Express, also known as Train 18, is an Indian intercity semi-high-speed, intercity, EMU train which is operated by the Indian Railways only on two prominent routes as of March 2022, one from New Delhi to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and the other from New Delhi to Varanasi.
