The Kaddish is a Jewish prayer that praises GOD and is recited during prayer services and as a memorial for the dead:
Meaning
The word Kaddish is Aramaic for "sanctification" and the prayer's central theme is to magnify and sanctify God's name.
Recitation
The Kaddish is usually recited in Aramaic at the end of major sections of synagogue services. The Mourner's Kaddish is recited by mourners for 11 months after the death of a parent or close relative, and also on the anniversary of the death.
Community
The Kaddish is traditionally recited with a minyan, a quorum of 10 Jews, to feel a sense of community while grieving. The mourner stands while reciting the Kaddish, and it's customary for all mourners to recite in unison.
History
The Kaddish originated in rabbinical academies and was originally recited after a sermon or at the end of public study. It became a regular feature of synagogue services and eventually became the prayer of mourners.
Variations
There are several variations of the Kaddish, but the best known is the Mourner's Kaddish.
