Fickle Wagtail
Animal diversity can be found in the vast nature of Bangladesh.
Birds hold a significant place in our nature among them.
Various bird species can be seen in the fields, forests, seas, haors, and localities of Bangladesh.
The fickle Wagtail is one of them.
Wagtail belongs to the Motacillidae family of the Passeriformes order.
This bird looks beautiful with its long tail and slender body.
It is a bird of very fickle nature.
It has an interesting habit of constantly wagging its tail.
And it flies in a wave-like motion rather than straight.
Wagtails are about 18-21 cm long depending on the species.
Male birds are brighter in color than females.
They feed on seeds, insects, tiny molluscs, earthworms, etc.
This bird walks and runs fast to catch prey.
It resides close to riverbanks and moist grasslands.
It lays 4-6 eggs which are bluish-white or brown in color with a yellow spot.
There are 12 species of Wagtails in the world, and Bangladesh has six of them.
They are Forest Wagtail, White Wagtail, White-browed Wagtail, Citrine Wagtail, Yellow Wagtail, and Grey Wagtail.
White-browed Wagtail species is native and the others are migratory.
The color of Forest Wagtail’s body, head, nape, back, and tail is olive-brown.
The tall, beautiful, and fickle White Wagtail is a winter migratory bird.
The color of the forehead, chin, throat, chest, and abdomen is white.
Only the upper part of the chest has a black mark.
The back of the head, mantle and upper parts of the wings are black.
The beak and legs are also black.
Male and female birds are similar in color.
It starts to arrive in Bangladesh in September and is prevalent throughout the country during Winter.
It usually roams alone, in pairs, or in small groups.
It feeds on insects, ants, caterpillars, beetles, and tiny molluscs.
It constantly wages its tail while foraging for feeding.
White-browed Wagtail is the largest member of the Wagtail family.
It is the native bird of Bangladesh.
Citrine Wagtail can be seen roaming alone, in pairs, or in small groups in haors, beels, and waterbodies during Winter.
The body of Yellow Wagtail is grey.
Their head, ears, back, and rump are grey, while their wings and tail are black.
Eyes are brown, with wide white eyebrow lines.
Except for the wings and tail, the entire body of male bird turns yellow during breeding.
In winter, it is easily seen in the coastal and grasslands of the country.
Grey Wagtail is a blackish-grey bird with a long tail.
Its head, cheeks, and back are dark-gray, wings and tail are black.
It is prevalent across the country during Winter.
The nature of Bengal is closely linked with birds.
But the number of birds in this country is declining alarmingly.
Bird habitat is being destroyed due to various reasons.
As a result, birds are facing serious food shortages.
Also, pesticides used in croplands kill or poison birds' food dragonflies, butterflies, and other insects.
Even birds are being poisoned and dying as a result of feeding on these.
Thus, as the biodiversity crisis is increasing, the ecosystem is being damaged as the birds become extinct.
