Autos are not like autos from the early 2000s. Most automatics now days are twice as efficient as a manual. Stuff like this makes my brain hurt how things are so backwards.
Try racing the MR2 without launch control or from a rolling start and see what happens. The sad part is it required 200k dollar highly engineered McLaren with a sequential trans, 7 gears, twin turbo V8, and LC to beat a 30 year old Toyota with 5 gears in a standard H form and a single turbo glued to a slant 4. That should be impressing even more.
Great video Rory, but you should try easing up on the smugness when doing these races. Also happened in the McLaren SLR video. That behavior will turn away future racers from agreeing to come onto your channel. Just poor form.
The McLaren driving experience is like a really fast computer, I imagine. More fun in the MR2, and it requires way more skill. Anybody can stomp on the pedal and go in a straight line, I have little respect for people who brag about their super duper fast computer on wheels that manages the powertrain for them.
McLaren has more grip, dct vs 5 spd, the mr2 even lost traction just a bit just after 2nd gear to 3rd. Power on mr2 is top end smaller motor. Love the content
The Maclaren only won because of the electronic aids, traction control, launch control and the sequential gearbox. The mr2 is just barebones and that's what I love about it!
The car can fuckin launch. No question. If he had done no lift shifts, he would have had a better chance. Think he lost it on turbo spool drop off into 3rd.
The MR2 lost primarily because of slower shifting and gear ratios. Traction control helps the McLaren, but the shifting on the MR2 is just not in the same league as the McLaren. Change the transmission in the MR2 to a sequential manual (with more appropriate gear ratios), and these cars would be near equal in 0-100.
I love how the McLaren driver is boasting as if he's actually doing something. Flat foot on the accelerator, gear shifts are automatic, traction control helped with the wheel spin, slam the brakes and ABS takes care of it. The least you could do is get a decent all-around MR2 of that power to compare and with ABS for sure and same tire brand/model. Otherwise you're comparing apples to oranges and the end result is a poorly made comparison with no real conclusion. Might as well say that orange is a faster color than black as this test shows...
Rory was so apologetic about the SLR losing against the 540, but a bit snobbish against this tuner. Lots to respect to the MR2 guy. In a rolling race, your shed tech probably would have embarrassed the McLaren boffins 🙄
This guy is so patronizing man, you have to give credit where it is due. This guy poured his heart into making that MR2, and in my opinion, going against a $200k+ motor for its age it came close!

Also the 540C falls just short and I suspect that the drivetrain is more efficient so the WHP is probably very similar. Drag is basically the same between the cars though, so with an upgrade gearbox he could probably do it. Not sure I'd want to...but it seems plausible! I'm assuming he's running a stock gearbox purely because the shifts were terrible. Realistically I hope he isn't with 600hp+ so who knows what the top speed is...so I guess it could do 200mph but I suspect it's unlikely.

The 0-100-0 test really aggravates me to be honest. Yes, the MR2 lost in that test configuration (an would admittedly lose every time), but the test doesn't actually give a good representation of the "stopping ability" of the MR2. As stated previously the McLaren was able to get to 100 faster, meaning it was able to initiate breaking sooner. The MR2 with the manual box, means that the time between each shift is also an addition to the total distance traveled on the way to 100. The McLaren was almost, if not, completely stopped by the time the MR2 applied the brakes. A more accurate test would have been to have both cars accelerate to 100 and then apply the brakes simultaneously at a set point. In spec sheets found online the recorded stopping distance from 60-0 standard test, the McLaren was 105ft and a stock MR2 was 157 (*70 - 0). That comes out to a difference of 4 car lengths. I guess that wouldn't make for exciting content. I understand the test is 100-0 not 60-0, but I can't imagine the results changing that drastically over the spec sheet. This also assumes that there were a few brake upgrades done along with the power increase. The MR2 also had a better power to weight ratio at .205 compared to the McLaren at .167. Yes the McLaren was/is an amazing car, but the work that it took to make the MR2 what it became, is nothing to shit on as this video seemed to do...
I think this is more to do with the traction control systems of the mclaren making the best use of the surface, i bet if the MR2 had some decent traction control it would be different story just see those vids from the old racelogic systems. Still like the MR2 more though and i would have a lot more time for a guy who built his own car rather than just buy a fast car that is easy to drive due to all the driver aids and bought mostly as a status symbol.

This!
Hands down to the man in the shed and his budget!
Built or bought, which one would you go for? ⬇️
One of each.
MR2 of course😒 who'd want that shitty mac?
You’re only a REAL car person if you like both but the McLaren would destroy the mr2 on a track
Your fellow TH-camrs, TheCarKids
Great video Rory, but you should try easing up on the smugness when doing these races.
Also happened in the McLaren SLR video.
That behavior will turn away future racers from agreeing to come onto your channel.
Just poor form.
Bought in this situation
The McLaren driving experience is like a really fast computer, I imagine.
More fun in the MR2, and it requires way more skill. Anybody can stomp on the pedal and go in a straight line, I have little respect for people who brag about their super duper fast computer on wheels that manages the powertrain for them.
No one:
This dude: “let’s compare a mclaren to a 30 year old all time classic car”
stock vs modified
@@zebrasgrave9354 its still oldscool tech. ill give this one to the mr2
Loved this video. As an MR2 fanboi (have yet to actually buy 1 tho) the *tiny* win it has over the McLaren at launch made me smile lol.
The car can fuckin launch. No question.
If he had done no lift shifts, he would have had a better chance.
Think he lost it on turbo spool drop off into 3rd.
MR2 body is a work of art🇯🇵✌️
Hi I'm Rory and welcome to the McLaren channel
It’s not about the braking it’s just because the mclaren got to a 100 quicker so it brake earlier
It's automatic vs manual....what to compare!! 🤷🏻♂️
This is good content
True didn't like this video
This guy is so patronizing man, you have to give credit where it is due. This guy poured his heart into making that MR2, and in my opinion, going against a $200k+ motor for its age it came close!
What a stupid comparison. Compare prices maybe?
Stupid comparison is exactly the point, it's just a bit of fun. Why bother with prices, it's not like anyone in the market for 1 of these cars will be looking at the other.
@@ApothecaryTerry If not bother with prices, then why not race this Mclaren with Hoonicorn? :-p
@@GhostKon I guess you're joking, but I think it'd actually be pretty funny to watch...
Other equally ridiculous but potentially amusing (and theoretically very close) suggestions:
A Lexus GS450h against a 1969 Mustang Mach 1 390
TVR Chimaera vs a BMW M4
981 Cayman S vs a Bentley Bentayga
I've owned 2 of those cars this year, so slightly biased choices, but regardless I'm up for weird drag races.

I'd take the MR2 its always been my dream car hopefully I will own one soon!Good Race.
Day 6 of asking for Mat vs Rory
a 3km race will be interesting when mr2 stops spinning and gains speed.
Not unless it has a top speed over 200mph...which it definitely doesn't.
@@ApothecaryTerry why not? Stock 3sgte is capable of 260km/h with 256hp..
@@Sidewinder5 Using the Turbo transmission for figures and 265/40R19 tyres that are huge for the car (both to give the car as much chance as possible) and totally ignoring power/drag, the redline would need to be increased to about 7800 RPM to get to 200mph.
I have a 1991 Mr2 2.2 litre my client purchased it brand new. I was his primary mechanic for 10 years, when he offered me the vehicle. ,5spd manual, large moonroof and 475,000 miles. In the process of rebuilding the top end, replacing the cooling system. So much fun to drive my daughter grew up commuting 100 miles a day to work. Over the hwy 74 Ortega highway. Hopefully it will drive again. Here in California they try to stop you from driving high mileage.
Around 2012, a MR2 costs 1000GBP on auto trader, there were plenty of them. now it costs around 5000 and not many for sell🤷♂️
You answered your own question. Supply and demand
This happens to a lot of Toyota vehicles. Which of their sports cars is your favorite?
It cost like 2k a few months ago.
Let's be honest. We all would like to drive that MR2.
Looks like the MR2 possibly did better vs the 540C than the McLaren SLR had in a previous video. Would be interested to see a comparison between those two especially as the SLR is 9 years newer than the MR2. The 0-100-0 here was basically a demonstration of ABS and Traction Control.
Rory. This is dope af. Love from Nairobi Kenya
2019vs1993
Automatic vs manual
Traction control esp vs nothing
They don't even do a roll race bruh
if the mr2 had some R compound tires and a sequential box; it would win!!
The money is always going to win, but was it really as fun? when all the work is done by the car it just isn't as fun. and yes i have both a built AND a bought car.
The Mister Two still looks great.
I had a 94 mr2 and It did have anti-lock but it was very rudimentary. You could hear it banging on and off.
It was an excellent car.
Luv and Peace.
Still no denying how fast that MR2 is though. It’s rapid. Well done to the lad for building it.
I love my MR2 even more after this video
You know you're old when a desirable car from your teenage years is considered a classic car now.
Down to the transmission - put a 6spd manual in the McLaren and this is a lot closer. Congrats to the MR2 owner for building a fast car, even if he lost this one
No Rolling race ? Would have been a lot closer
The real winner was the Enkei RPF1's 😎
Goat wheels
McLaren, Wow you got a lot of money... MR2, Wow you have brains !!!
Lovin that mr2 don’t see many anymore love it
Gearing
Mclaren is around 200k and mr2 with mods around 30k? Mclaren beat by 1/2 car? Hmmmmm
that Mr2 was making 400 hp at most
Everyone allways forgets about the braking system...
Hey man great video Rory!! Keep it up
Dang I loved this drag race! One day I hope to drag race cars like this on my channel in the future 🤞ONE. DAY.
I see you everywhere 😂
WTF??
I've seen those MR2s go very quick with a k series turbo swap and a sequential box.
doesn't even need a kswap , the 3sgte and sw20 did set a landspeed record as the fastest car in its class back in the 90's at the Bonneville salt flats, this child was throwing way too much shade and the videos quality suffered for it.
I was waiting for the third test...the rolling start. Have to admit i was routing for the MR2!
This just in: ABS stops faster than a driver that just locks up the wheels. McLaren is so innovative for having ABS in the car 🙄
Thank you and please keep these going! Add rolling race too!
that 540 is such a brilliant entry supercar
More of these races please.
when a comment like your car is not running 600 man what a joke. yeah because modern, drivetrain, suspension, gearbox dont make all those difference? embarrassing
So true. Rory isn’t a car person. Certified twat
The best test would've been rolling alongside each other from 35mph/45mph and accelerating hard. The MR2 might've held up better.
Difference is we respect the MR2 builder/owner. The McLaren owner: cool trustfund, bro!
Mr is too small for 600hp. Would be interested to see a rolling race...
540:
All carbon fiber
Vertical 7 speed gearbox
Tc/esc, esp
4 channel abs, esp collaboration
285 rear tires
Weistec boost engineering
Recirculating wastegate
Double wishbone pushrod susp
Accepts any octane, but 93 is preferred
What more does it need?
Mr2:
Vvti system replaced with race cams
Big snail, makes boost lag is inevitable
Abs 1 channel, no co-op
Lsd dependent
Broken tcs and stability(from age)
It’s basically a more simple mechanical design than a sophistic engineering.ride.
So, the McLaren 540C have 540 hp? Because the 720S have about 700hp to the wheels and that translate to almost 800hp at the crank...
The MR2 wasn't set up to be a drag car. Also the MR2 was not built to take those select groups of Super cars that a private owned tuned car could take on.
Now if they summoned a well know tuner shop and requested them to beat a certain super car and it was no expenses spared. I'm sure it would be a great challenge and race! 😉
The aerodynamics of the car plays a big roll
Ive a MR2 spyder with a 3sgte at 600hp with g25-660, i wanna try that mclaren agains me. I am at 1050kg and that car is at 1311kg

Wow, that McLaren paint is bad! You could see better color matching on $500 paint jobs.
Everyone calling for a roll race. what, roll race from 120mph for a chance to win? 🤣
Program a no lift shift into that MR-2 and it would be super close.
This race should be done 5 years ago
MR2 every time, working man's supercar
Ngl that guy sounds really condescending.
the lesson..never build a fast car because it is not fast...not safe too
I think this is more to do with the traction control systems of the mclaren making the best use of the surface, i bet if the MR2 had some decent traction control it would be different story just see those vids from the old racelogic systems.
Still like the MR2 more though and i would have a lot more time for a guy who built his own car rather than just buy a fast car that is easy to drive due to all the driver aids and bought mostly as a status symbol.
A k24 in the Mr2 with good gear box will smoke that mac
And Rory 540c didn't demolish mr2
Mr2 was right behind in the drag race
