Folks, BMWs are truly exceptional cars. The higher the range model (say 7-series), the more expensive it is to fix. I had a 2000 328i from 1999-2015, when it was totaled by someone who hit me. I did nearly 263,000 miles and still had the original clutch. I got good at doing my own brakes and other maintenance. That made it cheaper. But in 263,000 miles, I was never stranded. I loved that car. I now have a 2011 750i MSport. I love it. It's expensive to fix...like really expensive. But, it's something you know when you buy it. they are reliable (thankfully)...and, frankly, they just look great. The 750i drives like it's stolen...so damn fast, it'll blow your mind.
@@Chris93920 There's an oil additive specifically designed to soften the seals so they help prevent leakage when the car sets parked for a while. Definitely worth trying it.
This was my Dream car as a teenager until the 645 came out, then that became my dream car. i ended up getting a 645ci in 2015 even tho i already knew that the 650 was the better version smh. had the valve stem seal issue straight out the dealer & had massive smoke from the exhaust at every stop light just like u described. motor blew in 3 months. so much for achieving my dream car
I have 4 of these. 2 745li and 2 750 Li. Will not recommend you to buy these cars unless you are an enthusiastic mechanic. Parts are cheap though. Labour will be the killer. Good video here. Very pertinent.
I have a 2003 745i e65 with the n62. Best car I've ever owned! Smooth, silent, and 0-60mph in exactly 6.0secs! I've had it for three years and first thing I did was have all oil and transmission seals changed plus a new head gasket. It has used 1ltr of oil in 3 years! Change the oils every 7k if normal oil or every 12k if longlife and you will have very few problems. Absolutely beautiful luxury ride!
There’s nothing in the video stopping me from buying one of these. I can do all the repairs myself, so that helps. You forgot the timing chain guides that the 4.4 is notorious for.
I still have mines,the problem is the transmission failsafe keep coming on..and I use to have to cut car off and crank it again and would go away..but then I get worse like when it come on,I cut car off and try to cut on again,car wouldn't come on..but when it finally cranks,the transmission failsafe light come back on..it's like it didn't want me to reset it..but Im believing my computersmay have got wet or something..idk..smh
Don't forget about the coolant pipe issue that runs from the front to rear of the block. Tell tell sign will be coolant from the weep hole by the water pump. I fixed mine with the telescopic coolant pipe right there in my driveway. The aftermarket pipe helps avoid having to remove the front timing cover and cuts down the job significantly. I'm at 190k miles on my '03 745Li and had it since ~30k miles. spent some money in parts but the labor was ~$500 as I did all my work. Had to pay to get some programming as some parts do require the dealership/BMW software. Own 2 others and also do my own work on a 330i and X5. Fun cars to drive and definitely helps if you can turn your own wrench.
Did u have misfiring problems after changing out the coolant pipe? I had someone do my 745li and now it misfires and doesn't want to seem to stay on running wise

A friend had an 02 745i model with nothing but issues. Valve stem seals leaked after parked for a while, so smoked after starting. Park brake motor broke so needed to be manually released. Also all kinds of lights would come on in the dash for stability and traction control, the list went on.
I just bought a 2002 bmw 745li and it has most of the things you have said wrong with it... I only paid $700 for it and am replacing things as I go... it only has 167k miles on it its a sharp car but not sure if I made the right choice buying it yet but we will see... the tires and wheels alone are worth more than I paid for the entire car.... its completely loaded... and when I get the I hope simple things fixed I'm sure it will be a very nice car...
CLS CLS you got a screamin deal! Nice. We have the same one and I love it. The only problem we had so far was a lower control arm and radiator tube kept coming off. Fixed it ourselves for $40.00.
I was looking at a 03 745i with some of the same issues the abs sign and a rough starts shuts off when coming to a stop seems like a vac leak of some sort but he only wants 500. What u think?

So pretty much everything is failure on this 7 series. Well here’s the thing I’ve own this 7 series for almost 6 years and the only things that I fix was alternator bracket seal and that’s it the car overall was amazing no big issues. But some people own these cars and they don’t take care of them and once they breakdown then they’re start crying because these big luxury cars made for people how to know to take care of it properly and that’s the key factor.

My 745li is running hot with new thermostat and new oolant sensor..what should I try the head gasket isn’t blown I used a dye test to confirm...there’s to much pressure in my cooling system that it cracked 2 reservoirs.

I have one replaced valve seals for 1500$ and abs module rebuild on eBay for 80$ besides that car runs great no problems car has 170,xxx most other stuff I fix myself if you can’t fix cars and be a man stick to your civics that you only check the oil every 6 months lol

I have an 06 and an 07 BMW 750Li - Both seem to have problems with NO start - I will have dash lights but no crank. I'm told to check the ground straps. The problem is I'm getting different locations and amount of straps. We found one on right front near starter but looks fine. Do you have know any other locations or maybe a video on this issue.

On the transmission fail safe mode, that could be a oil pressure failure, you can replace the transmission fluid and the filter and that could fix the problem. The brake smell can be caused by a inappropriate brake pad quality or the caliper is not lubricated (the caliper pins are stuck) or defective brake caliper

What do you know about the Oil level sensor malfunction light? My '08 750li has this problem. I checked the oil and it was fine. I replaced the oil level sensor and it showed correctly the first time I started the car after replacement. The next time I started the car and drove it it ran fine. But when I shut it off I got the same message "Oil Level Sensor Malfunction". I changed the Oil pressure sensor. I read somewhere that the problem could be the alternator. Mine had been replaced before I got it. So, I bought a new one and I still get the same warning light. I've reset the oil service light and it was fine for one drive then it came back again. Any help would be appreciated.

this is built to break on purpose. i noticed bmw does that with my 2002 525i, i fixed so much stuff. i got lucky because i do the work free and the parts are cheap. so the car engine is great but i replaced the water pump twice, alternator, fan clutch, ccv, coolant reservoir, fsu twice, window regulators 3 times each until i bought originals again, battery 3 times. the car runs great though so the engine is awesome.

+heera rodriguez The water pump transfer pipe, right? There is a product called bimmerfix to repair that problem and you only need to remove the water pump.
My BMW 745li v8 2004, stopped on motion and refused to start. It crank but won't start ,they fuel pump working well,they wiped all the codes and change crank sensor,yet not working, before all this problems it was showing me engine manulfunction ,engine oil pressure low stop carefully .even after service the engine..someone said may be is my oil pump that's not making it to start. Hi, i owned a facelifted e66 v8 2006 750li, i ve been driving it for few years alrd and this issue keep happening but it never actually cause any real problem so i kinda ignore it, but it still annoy me and im not sure what cause the issue , hope u can help me out. I live in VietNam South East Asian country , the traffic here is quite slow so most the time i drive with speed under 30 miles/hour. This issue only happen after i start the engine and drive for 10-15 minus, and it mostly happen when i start driving uphill and slowly accelerate from around 25 miles/ h to 35 miles/h and that is when the car start a series of vibration/ shaking that i feel like it come from under/below the car. The vibration/shaking come in waves, it vibrating for like 2 seconds and then stop for like 0.5 sec and then vibrate again 2 secs and repeat few times. When i almost reach the top of the hill , it stop. I really confuse about this and its been happening for years and no mechanic in my city can actually figured out the issue correctly. Please help me out on this , thank u so much.

The face lift models are good to go for, all the previous issius have been fixed with the face lift models. The face lift models of the 7serie start from 2006 and up
750Li 2007 sometimes wont start...if i wait 5 minutes it starts and runs fine...i am hearing it may be ivm...will blow codes with transmission symbol...reset codes and its fine, but sometimes wont start...wait five minutes and starts...dealership wont do anything but reset codes...have you heard of this?

Transmmision gear ratio Failure. This could be a problem with the transmission oil pressure, a seal or a the oil can be in a bad condition. My recommendation: remove the transmission oil and filter, then remove the transmission valve body to replace the seals. This could fix your problem.
Horrible leap for the 7 series from the E38. Many feel the E38, especially the 750, was the finest car BMW ever built. The generation afterwards are just money pits. So are E38’s, but not as bad.

You need to have a scan tool to check the reason why the transmission Fail-Safe mode is active, it could be a bad solenoid or a bad transmmision fluid.
Based on my experience with this problem. I drove my BMW X5 E53 and I parked in the garage and the next day I started the engine and the transmission Fail-Safe mode came on, the solenoid No. 4 was broken and I replaced them all. After that the transmission is running with not problems. If the problem is active, you can still drive your car only in third gear and reverse.
Bought a 2006 bmw 750li for $2000 runs good need to change control arms and get a.. gear ingaged with out break position and my brake lights don't turn off anyone knows why
I'd recommend a 2003 and up, the face lifted one. Less electronics and corrosion problems. You can recognize the face lifted model easily as the rear lights are red/white striped.
DjDestinyChicago a valve stem job is not an easy fix if it was people wouldn’t be selling them due to this problem and shops wouldn’t be charging $2k and up to do them....
You need a diagnostic tool to pull the codes. I believe that the transmission fluid is weak and the filter is bad, replace them. Also, it is possible that your transmission valve body seals and leaking internally. It is possible that you will need to replace them too.

Take the serpentine belt and AC belt off and if it makes the noise it’s something inside the engine if not it’s a pulley or bearing

But when I shut it off I got the same message "Oil Level Sensor Malfunction". I changed the Oil pressure sensor. I read somewhere that the problem could be the alternator. Mine had been replaced before I got it. So, I bought a new one and I still get the same warning light. I've reset the oil service light and it was fine for one drive then it came back again. Any help would be appreciated.

this is built to break on purpose. i noticed bmw does that with my 2002 525i, i fixed so much stuff. i got lucky because i do the work free and the parts are cheap. so the car engine is great but i replaced the water pump twice, alternator, fan clutch, ccv, coolant reservoir, fsu twice, window regulators 3 times each until i bought originals again, battery 3 times. the car runs great though so the engine is awesome.

The water pump transfer pipe, right?
There is a product called bimmerfix to repair that problem and you only need to remove the water pump.
My BMW 745li v8 2004, stopped on motion and refused to start. It crank but won't start ,they fuel pump working well,they wiped all the codes and change crank sensor,yet not working, before all this problems it was showing me engine manulfunction ,engine oil pressure low stop carefully .even after service the engine..someone said may be is my oil pump that's not making it to start. Hi, i owned a facelifted e66 v8 2006 750li, i ve been driving it for few years alrd and this issue keep happening but it never actually cause any real problem so i kinda ignore it, but it still annoy me and im not sure what cause the issue , hope u can help me out. I live in VietNam South East Asian country , the traffic here is quite slow so most the time i drive with speed under 30 miles/hour. This issue only happen after i start the engine and drive for 10-15 minus, and it mostly happen when i start driving uphill and slowly accelerate from around 25 miles/ h to 35 miles/h and that is when the car start a series of vibration/ shaking that i feel like it come from under/below the car. The vibration/shaking come in waves, it vibrating for like 2 seconds and then stop for like 0.5 sec and then vibrate again 2 secs and repeat few times. When i almost reach the top of the hill , it stop. I really confuse about this and its been happening for years and no mechanic in my city can actually figured out the issue correctly. Please help me out on this , thank u so much.

750Li 2007 sometimes wont start...if i wait 5 minutes it starts and runs fine...i am hearing it may be ivm...will blow codes with transmission symbol...reset codes and its fine, but sometimes wont start...wait five minutes and starts...dealership wont do anything but reset codes...have you heard of this?
Could be a bad battery or loose battery cable as well.

Transmmision gear ratio Failure.
This could be a problem with the transmission oil pressure, a seal or a the oil can be in a bad condition.
My recommendation: remove the transmission oil and filter, then remove the transmission valve body to replace the seals. This could fix your problem.
I had the same issue and it was the transmission pan got that replaced with the boltz and new transmission fluid runs perfect!
The e66 was my favorite platform. Is it possible to LS swap it for less problems, since parts of the engine is bad?

Horrible leap for the 7 series from the E38. Many feel the E38, especially the 750, was the finest car BMW ever built. The generation afterwards are just money pits. So are E38’s, but not as bad.

Check the fuses on the trunk, replace if they are bad.
Also a bad crankshaft position sensor can cause this problem.

You need to have a scan tool to check the reason why the transmission Fail-Safe mode is active, it could be a bad solenoid or a bad transmmision fluid.
Based on my experience with this problem.
I drove my BMW X5 E53 and I parked in the garage and the next day I started the engine and the transmission Fail-Safe mode came on, the solenoid No. 4 was broken and I replaced them all.
After that the transmission is running with not problems.
If the problem is active, you can still drive your car only in third gear and reverse.
Bought a 2006 bmw 750li for $2000 runs good need to change control arms and get a.. gear ingaged with out break position and my brake lights don't turn off anyone knows why
Do yourself a favor and get the older E38 7 series BMW. A lot less issues then these.

I'd recommend a 2003 and up, the face lifted one. Less electronics and corrosion problems. You can recognize the face lifted model easily as the rear lights are red/white striped.

Daniel D. This is all very easy to fix. The valve seals are simple. There’s 36 of them, but very doable with the proper tools.

DjDestinyChicago a valve stem job is not an easy fix if it was people wouldn’t be selling them due to this problem and shops wouldn’t be charging $2k and up to do them....

You need a diagnostic tool to pull the codes.
I believe that the transmission fluid is weak and the filter is bad, replace them.
Also, it is possible that your transmission valve body seals and leaking internally. It is possible that you will need to replace them too.
