Emmitt was competitive, tough, relentless, strong, had great vision, stayed healthy (an underrated skillset), & had great stamina.
Emmit's was a complete back as he could catch & block very well out of the backfield.
He wasn't the fastest or flashiest back, but was very effective.
That's why people to this day don't know what made him so great & they just give credit to his offensive lines. It was the little things he did that he made great. And he did it over & over for years without getting hurt so he stayed available.
But Emmit would wear you down with those 3,5, 6 yard gains & keep on coming. He could carry the ball 25+ times a game as well. This impacted the whole team as his teams constantly ate up time of possession and kept his defense off the field. These are the little non-flashy elements to Emmit's game that made him great!
You do that for 15+ years & you're something special.

Emmitt was so good at maintaining his speed at about 80% while he weaved through the first and second level of the defense. He rarely took a big hit because of his great vision and running style.

I watched about every carry of Emmitt's career. It is still hard for me to describe what it was that made him so good. Watching Emmitt run was mesmerizing. Most of the time he did not make dramatic cuts or or stop and go, like Barry for instance. He sort of bent and shaped his runs, glided, he often slowed to affect the angle of the defender which allowed his blockers to get a better angle on the defenders, he would even put his hand on the back of his FB. He was sooo savy, it was said that Emmitt could see what the defense did before they did it. But probably most important, he was unspeakably TOUGH and had the competitive drive of the Champion he is. Emmitt was my hero as a kid and he still is. #22.

Nate Newton's words, "Emmit Smith made US better!" Emmitt "Move The Chains" Smith. Emmitt "First Down" Smith. Emmit "Touchdown" Smith. Where was that Cowboys O-LINE in Pop Warner, High School and College At?? It's like Michael Irvin said when he and Jimmy Johnson looked at Emmitt's films before he was drafted. Irvin said, "Well if he's not that GOOD, then how is he gettin ALL these yards!!?? The Kareem Abdul-Jabbar of RBs is how and why. The bulk of them were on the first 2 until free agency hit. Emmitt's 8,000+ yards in HS, and being Florida's All-Time leading rusher for decades until finally broken speaks for itself. Back2Back HS championships from a HS who won 3 games in 3 years. Revived a sanctioned UF school and set the foundation for those 90s Gators and beyond. It’s sort of counterintuitive thinking that Emmitt might be one of the only classic rbs who could thrive in today’s game. Not blazing fast, not especially big…but a wizard at making people miss and maneuvering through traffic. Guys were flying by him after a missed tackle. He has that X factor of vision combined with total body awareness and anticipation. He would still be really good in the league. Young Emmitt of course

  • @panchosvilla

I think because Emmitt got so much exposure with Dallas there is a bit of backlash against him. I hear a lot that he wasnt as good as Barry Sanders. Maybe he was or wasnt. Ioved watching them both !!! But I think because he wasnt as "flashy" as Barry, it is automatically assumed he wasnt as good. Emmitts vision and as Nicholas mentions , could keep that speed at 80% until the opening, plus the power to break tackles and makes cuts i think gets him undersold. Barry was AMAZING and Dallas definitly had the better teams of course. But Barry didnt run behind poor O-Lines. Lomas Brown< Mike Compton, Kevin Glover,Mike Utley, etc etc. those are pro bowl linemen. Emmitt played against D-1 talent in high school, agaisnt the Miami's and Bamas in college and of course with the Cowboys. thats A LOT of yards !! A LOT !! !it wasnt because he was lucky.

    • @PockyCandy
      @PockyCandy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Barry did run against Defenses like Oklahoma and Nebraska in college too. However, I do agree with your statement in general. Emmitt Smith wasn't flashy, but the guy was relentless, was extremely well-rounded, and had otherworldly vision. He certainly had more power than Barry.

@@thegorn68 Barry Sanders had the best moves of all time but that's where it stops! The Sanders myth, he had no offensive line. It's impossible for any RB, including Sanders to do so well without a good offensive line! I agree with you, Emmitt Smith was the more complete RB out of the two. I'll take Emmitt bc I want my QB to be able to have a chance of getting his passes off with a good blocking back & good hands out if the backfield!

I got covid and was stuck at home for a couple of weeks, so on TH-cam I found Dallas Cowboys games and watched the '89-'94 seasons all in order to watch the team progress.
Most of the Cowboys O-line was intact. Stepnoski was there, Nate Newton, Kevin Gogan, Mark Tuinei. The offensive line didn't start looking good until Emmitt started hitting his stride, starting with the Redskins game week 4 1990. Emmitt had a QB understanding of defenses from a RB perspective. That was his edge. Wasn't the most physically gifted, but Contact balance and vision, that's what made him special.

Captain Spartan 04 - with all due respect, this is the "Classical Tailback" series. Of the 4 players you just requested highlights of, only one is an RB. And quite frankly, he is NOT a "classical runner" in any shape, way, or form whatsoever. Not now, and not at Univ. of Louisville.
As a lifelong practitioner and avid student of this now dying/diluted art form (at the collegiate & professional levels of American football), please give greater consideration to your words in this arena. I myself was nearly offended by your request. If you want clips of QB or pass rushers, please revise your search.
These grounds are for "runners only."

For what it's worth, I am planning on making videos of other positions at some point. Especially dominant defensive players like Lawrence Taylor.

Emmitt is Already At HIS Top Speed First Step... While Everyone On D Is Trying To Figure Whats Up... Then He's By You... Now His Top Speed Wasn't The Fastest. So You Probably Can Catch Him Sometimes Down Field, Alah Giants (Shoulder Injury)....But That 4th Gear, Then Being So Cunning And Elusive Out The Gate?? Whoa... Got Torpedoed Against The Raiders... (Where Was The O Line There.) Bounced off. Scored. TOUGH Man. In His Freshman Year against Alabama He Didn't Start. Upperclassmen Running Backs did nothing. He Came In. Dominated. O Line? Florida?... Come On... Emmitt On Every Level. ALL DAY. Plus Detroit DESTROYED The Cowboys in The Playoffs... Shhhh... O Line..
    Knock It Off.

This highlight reel is terrible honestly. Shows way too many short runs.
It's supposed to be highlights not every college run he had for positive yards.

I think the term you're looking for is "disrespected." I can't think of another all time great that gets ripped on as much as Emmitt.

If Emmitt was overrated, why does he own so many records. And if Emmitt is so overrated then what does that make you? Another question, have you ever played football before? And at what level? Have you ever lead the nation in HS or the NFL before? Have you ever won a Superbowl? Yeah man, you suck bro! You're the most overrated loser just like the rest of them. I'm blown away by people like you that have accomplished nothing in the sport, yet you pass judgement on a man that has accomplished more than any RB in history. What's crazy us Emmitt Smith is the most consistent RB in history. And when I say consistent I mean consistently great at the highest level on every level he's ever played on in the history of the game. What kind of history have you made & created for yourself & your teams to call the most accomplished & arguably the greatest RB in the history of the game? Bc he did it. Did you do anything to even have a valued opinion about him? Go ahead I'm waiting for your answers so that I can destroy you with more of his accomplishments over your own.
