The total absurdity of such a notion as to filming the drinks separately has to make this sketch a work of genius.

It's to do with health and safety regulations. The TV studios aren't allowed to have real glass and real alcohol on the TV set when filming. It might sound ridiculous and silly but in the 70s when glass and booze was allowed, Bernard Youens who played Stan Ogden in Coronation street developed a drinking problem & cirrhosis from all the takes he had to do each week. His family sued the BBC and won a fortune. Since then no glass or booze allowed.
