- This is a snippet of a larger conversation taking place on Crash Course Pods: The Universe. Over the next 11 episodes, John Green and Katie Mack will walk through the entire history of the universe… even the parts that aren’t written yet.
The first three episodes are out now and can be streamed on the Crash Course channel and wherever else you get your podcasts. Subscribe at complexly.io/theuniverse

The Science One: "I'm going to write a book!"
The Book One: "I'm going to do science!"
any time John says "I'm going to not panic" there is a silent "yet"
Was just thinking this 😂 the “yet” is silent but deafening
John said "I'm gonna not panic" and I said, out loud, to nobody in particular, "Are you?"
I love the "Its not a long time because who cares?" explanation of timescale.
It's not a long time because nothing happens!
++
Amazing how physics constantly shifts between terrifying me into an existential panic moment and giving me a nice comfortable hug of 'all is well and the world makes sense'
In the end, everything always made sense. And, for some parts of that everything, the most sensible response is existential panic.
I find it easier to keep the existential panic at bay when I focus on how cool it is to live in a time when we can figure all this stuff out.

Star John pointing out, on his nifty little chart, what should and should not constitute "a while" is, dare I say it, adorable
I'm really glad you pointed this out (with a time stamp) because I had subtitles on and it covered that up.
@@kashiichan Aw I'm so glad! It's a great little moment and I'm happy that pointing it out allowed you to enjoy it
This is that bit from Bill Wurtz’s History of the Entire World “a bunch of gas in space… but it’s getting closer together”
"...and it's getting closer together..."
When you're making a playlist of podcast episodes, don't put the newest episode first so the playlist goes through the podcast episodes in reverse order. Who watches or listens to anything in reverse order? Only mad men. We don't need mad men as listeners to the podcast.
This is the problem with most if not all the Podcasts on TH-cam/YT Music.
On Google Podcast you had the freedom to reorder episodes.
Having recent episodes first is convinient for long time listeners who have caught up till the last one.
But for grabbing new audiences the playlists should be oldest to newest
How is the “we” and that’s a harsh Anti Madmen stance. Madmen are people too.
Adding new videos to a playlist in reverse order is youtube's default setting, but the playlist owner can order them as they see fit. I agree though; why is reverse order the default setting? Get on that, TH-cam!
@@twojuiceman the predominant viewing habit is watching peoples content they produce it. So to make the predominant amount of consumption to seek the bottom of the list, every time is more detrimental.
TH-cam just needs to create the ability to reorder a Playlist once you have added it to be one of your Playlists. That way it can remain as created by the owners, but can be changed once added. But yeah, this has been an annoyance of mine for a long time.
I'm not gonna panic, I'm just gonna listen. hahaha
And mean while this really calms me down
I like the "Clarence in heaven during it's a wonderful life" visualizer
The thumbnails for this podcast are A+
Complexly sure know what they're doing
If this was how all of the thumbnails were, I would disagree, but it existing as something new -- spot on. Too much of something of it would be a problem.
This!
I’m obsessed with the visuals for this entire podcast. They’re damn good at what they do and whoever came up with the idea for the little twinkling stars and whoever is creating these visuals needs a huge high five.
This series is enthralling!! I give it 5 plasma clouds!
This review will age well (v slowly)

Thanks! Absolutely love this series. Should the Anthropocene Reviewed be considered a sequel to this? 😂
I just listened to this podcast episode but I still had to watch the animation
The Johnception when you get a John Green OCD/Turtles All the Way Down ad before a John Green video.
Katie The Science Expert: "So the time scale relevant to our discussion goes from about 10^-30 seconds to about 10^16 seconds."
John The English Expert: "I literally don't have enough superlatives in my lexicon to label every relevant factor in that scale."
This makes it look like John is being sent on a mission to get his wings
John and cosmology, the pairing I didn't knew I needed
Love those animations dang
Listening to this I can't help but be reminded of History of the Entire World (I Guess). "and it's getting closer together... and it's getting closer together.. and it's-" Obviously this podcast is explaining things in more detail, but the first part of that video still just keeps playing in my head.
Just wanted to let you know that I've been watching the pods on crash course, and I love them! Thank you for making my evening sewing so much more interesting.
I've been loving this podcast so far!
Don't panic John! It's done- it won't change
I love this format. Beautiful video.
I love this stuff!! ty!
Oh, I didn't see this on the podcast yesterday. Guess I'll have to listen to it here and there now.
My mantra is- if John can understand it, so can I
I like the visuals!!!
Great video.
I am enjoying the podcast. It's good.
Frick indeed
"so, we're only here in this current state because of the early quantum fluctuations that came along with inflation".
No, that's wrong. We're here, because we're here, because we're here, because we're here, because we're here
There was an ad with John Green in it before this video.
Nice
I love clouds of cold gas! I think that's fascinating! It's amazing!
“The gas cooled.” How? Where did the energy go? Gas cools through expansion only when it has a receding boundary to press against. Was it energy loss through radiation?
I'm all for existential panic, but wouldn't there be nearly endless 'otherwise I wouldn't be here' moments? Is there something special about that detail that I'm missing?
But it’s getting closer together…it’s a STAAAAAAR
The thumbnail undersells it. It's actually fffffffffffffffrick.
When the astrophysicist comments the early universe was dark and consisted of primarily hydrogen gas she forgot to mention the dominant dark matter or what it might be doing.
Before there were stars there was more stars
Damn, saw the thumbnail and thought it was discount Anthroposine reviewed about the word "frick"
Before there were stars and galaxies. There still are but there used to too. - Space Mitch Hedberg, probably
I had a weird thought while listening to the podcast.
Could the very first stars have been massive in the order of magnitude of a galaxy? And thus have left behind the supermassive black holes at the cores of galexies after burning out?
I suppose if it were possible, somebody would have modeled it, And we probably would see remnants of their hyper-super-duper novae.
But I find the concept intriguing.
Hello!
Im a minute and a half in and Im sold! But I cant watch the rest of this video, I need the whole thing youre doing all at once please. i assume ill have to wait but please put it all in one place eventually my tiny brain doesnt want to do it in 180 second bites
It's a podcast you can listen to in 45 minute chunks, if that helps.
Its possible we have gone through multiple cycles of heat death and rebirth already. an uncountable amount of times.
The youtube playlist for this series is backwards. It's playing the most recent episode when you start it instead of the first.
This playlist is backwards: th-cam.com/play/PL8dPuuaLjXtPrbBlasHP1BA23MwXJ8Gpm.html
I don't know how you can flip it but I know you can because other channels do.
"Sort - Date Published: Oldest"
Incidentally the playlist on Crash Course is in backwards order, with the latest episode currently as #1 and the first episode last.
Yes, an annoying thing about how TH-cam works. Newest is always first by default unless the Playlist owner moves it around, which is not necessarily easy. I was late to Nerdfighteria and the Vlogbrothers community, but this annoyance made it extremely difficult to watch the old videos in an effort to catch up, because you can't just hit play and watch in order...
The last time I was this early was when I came into the world a month premature 😂
I love whoever did the animation
Friiick
Fucking metal dude, I love it
John go play Outer Wilds by Mobius Digital and go explore the question and answers of "why are we here"
I'm excited for this podcast too... but how many Friday slots are going to just be ads?
Probably until John feels well enough to do a Friday episode. He mentioned the press tour for TATWD and talking about his mental illness had been destabilizing, and he was not doing great.
They've been doing these clips as bonus videos, not replacing the usual videos. Hank's videos still come out on Fridays. Enjoy the bonus!
@@rebeccabrown4277 and @minimarker3 - You're both very correct and I am very wrong. Thank you.
@@somefreshbreadThis was a graceful acceptance of being wrong, and I commend you for it. I wish more people reacted like this instead of getting defensive.
@@kashiichan I mean literally had the DAY OF THE WEEK wrong hahaha
Why is John the new zeitgeist-chosen symbol for AI-enabled interface elements? ✨
✨✨
How does the gas cool down? There’s nothin colder already there to take the thermal energy right? Is it space expanding and slowing things down?
"Is it space expanding and slowing things down?" This.
omg my cousin is named Neutral Adams
As a vlogbrothers video, this has only one third the views and less than one fourth the comments of a "regular" 4-minute one (very roughly; I'm not going to do a lot of research or math). And not because nerdfighteria (sp?) are an incurious bunch. I think we're a lot more likely to have existential dread, actually.
Anyone looking forward to the heat death of the universe?
Frick
Thank goodness that the astrophysicist got an award-winning novelist to join her podcast to add eloquent insights such as... "Frick."
(/jk)
I like this podcast. I don't really like that y'all posted it in DH&J but I forgive you because I know that's (annoyingly) common practice in the podcast world.
AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
She sounds like Elizabeth Holmes
Having John being the science one is confusing the heck out of me
TH-cam will probably remove this comment because it contains the link to the program on Crash Course that the OP is referring to.

We're here because we're here because of randomly condensating gasclouds? 😮😊
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFrick
okay ngl I'm starting to get tired of seeing this posted everywhere. to be clear, I really enjoy this podcast and I'm subscribed to it in my podcast app but now I've seen ads for this episode in that feed, the dear Hank and John feed, and twice in my TH-cam feed from crash course and vlogbrothers. It's a great podcast but I'm starting to get fatigued
Dude, thank you for saying so.
please stop posting clips from the podcast as vlog brothers vidoes.
