    My favourite thing about the ending it's that it's Drusilla, Angel's creation, that keeps him from saving Darla at the end. And you can see in his eyes how aware he is of that. His old sins stripping him from the possibility of finding some kind of redemption for what he and Darla had done.

      Nothing that happens on Buffy beats anything that happens on Angel. Over on Buffy, they're trying to recreate Buffy and Angel with everyone. And over on Angel, everything is original. For example Angel's background with Darla and Darla's character development

    "Whenever Holland talks about morals..."
    I think the creepiest thing is that he might actually mean it. He's clearly not devoid of human feeling. He's obviously attached to Lindsay. His admonishment about "healthy attachments outside of the office" is honestly good advice. He might have been able to convince himself that he has some morals left. And that's...honestly terrifyingly realistic.

If I remember correctly (it's been a while since I re-watched the whole Angel series), Fred and Jasmine (here still without a name) sit outside, and Jasmine "likes the smell of the flowers" - that's why they (Fred, Jasmin - the others?) decide to name her Jasmine. And more important, she already has a name, which must be hidden - or "kept"...

    What I like in the end is kind of how symbolic it is that it is Dru that is turning Darla, in front of Angel. Angel clearly has been focusing on Darla, and trying to save her. Like if he could save the person who made him a monster, maybe then he could gain some redemption for the bad he had done. Then in walks in Drusilla, a living embodiment of the worst that Angelus is capable of, and destroys that chance to save Darla. Kind of showing that despite his efforts to be redeemed, it is always going to be just out of his reach.

    I absolutely adore the conversation between Angel and Darla in the motel, it really encapsulates why they’re my favourite relationship in the Buffyverse, there are just so many layers to their history and their feelings towards each other, every one of their interactions is charged with a different kind of emotion. And the gentleness before W&H bust in, when Darla accepts her fate and you can tell Angel is willing to stay with her to end end.

    • @MrsCKane
      @MrsCKane 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It reminded me of when Angel was trying to reach Faith after she accidentally killed the deputy mayor and he was making head way, then Wesley and his band of moron watchers barged in and kidnapped her saying the now famous line - "We know how to handle slayer like her."
      Ha! Boy were they wrong. They really messed everything up that Angel had build with Faith up until that point. 🤦🏻‍♀️
      Everything could have been different for Faith if they'd not interfered with what Angel was trying to doing.

    • @vanyadolly
      @vanyadolly 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yes, I think it's so interesting because it isn't overtly romantic as most relationships like this are. They've never had the option to love each other. But something still kept them together for 150 years, and still keeps them coming back to each other. Something that transcends whatever they were to each other before. One of the tragedies at the end of the episode is that they again never got the chance to really figure out what they were to each other as two people who are capable of love.

  • @anthony3557
    @anthony3557 3 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    The Darla episodes are among my very favourites in the whole of 'Angel', and like you, I often forget how much is packed into this particular one. Julie Benz's singing is an absolute highlight here, to the extent that I mentioned it in a tweet on my last rewatch, and she responded that she was a bundle of nerves when they came to shooting that scene. I don't think it shows at all, overcome by how she conveys Darla's desperate need for an answer.
    And then there's that ending. Oh boy, are we in for a ride!

    The way Darla looks at Angel while he's throwing a temper tantrum always gets me. She couldn't wait to get turned because having a soul and mortality was all downsides in her eyes. It was just like life as a vampire, except without any power and with a mountain of guilt plaguing her every day. But then she sees in Angel the thing having a soul has to offer: loving and being loved. No one had ever loved her that way, so why should she wanna stick around?

    I always viewed "The Trial" as Darla's, not Angel's. It is set up as Angel's but it is really Darla's journey, from being terrified of dying to accepting her fate. Due to Angel's sacrifice Darla was saved. Her human soul is redeemed because she now understands sacrifice and heroism. She accepts her fate.

  • @Xehanort10

      @mrs.schmenkman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Wow! An interesting thing you just made me realize....in essence, Darla actually gets to save her “soul” as it were. She is actually redeemed in essence as she went from CHOOSING to give up her soul to become a vamp, to choosing not to. In a religious sense, this would provide her with a completely different ending the the human afterlife.

    • @jaycievictory8461
      @jaycievictory8461 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@mrs.schmenkman I just went into a philosophical spiral above about this. Darla's human soul was seemingly pulled from hell leading me to question if what she'd done in her life really deserved that or if her death at the hands of a vampire made that inevitable. (If the latter, that makes every death of a human by vampire a truly horrific tragedy that should be averted at all costs). By this logic, at the end of this episode when she's turned against her will, her soul would be released to a heavenly afterlife. So, Angel did save her in the end 😪

      @mrs.schmenkman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @The Fox Strikes They say having his soul in her body influences her. And the moment she gives birth she knows she won't be able to love him anymore. She's able to make that sacrifice cos she loves him with a selfless love. And she's only able to love selflessly cos of the influence of his soul. Like he's sharing her body, her blood, her oxygen, she's sharing his soul.
      We're left unknowing what her fate is after staking herself. But Connor sees his mother later in a scene which suggests her human soul found rest/redemption.

    Angel having to watch Dru turn Darla, this consequence of his past that only happened because Darla turned him so long ago, this idea of vampires as once victims, and how seeing someone you love go through something traumatic is in some ways worse than experiencing it yourself -- Angel is so helpless here, and after an episode of being a Big Damn Hero for Darla (and failing) that stings twice over. The Oracles' commentary implies that Angel becoming human directly ushered in the beginning of the apocalypse and Buffy's imminent death in the timeline that never was, especially since he didn't demand to be changed back or show signs of missing his superpowers until it was clear to him that the end was going to be coming very soon and that his transformation had ushered in this end. I think that might have been the tipping point, given his guilt complex. He can't deal with it being his fault. He can deal with not being there for the apocalypse but can't handle his absence being what *starts* the apocalypse.
      ...Or maybe he's just not thinking straight because he's been getting more and more erratic and desperate lately. I mean, he's apparently seriously considering biting Darla in the last scene. His judgement has clearly gone to shit in a way that it hadn't in I Will Remember You

    'The Trial' is the episode that sets up the rest of the series; Holtz, Connor and Jasmine (hell, even bigger chess moves by Wolfram & Hart). It all begins here... with a man-pire trying to save the woman he claims not to love but definitely does (actions speak louder than words). Whether it was intentional or not, for me... Angel's foreshadowing always felt more retroactive (like they planted random seeds and would cherry pick them as needed as they continued on) whereas Buffy's felt truly like setup for future (as in they where beholden to play out what they had seeded) storylines. It all still works seemlessly, sometimes more so... the A to B to C, is PERFECTION! And makes Angel feel complete from 'City Of...' to 'Not Fade Away' 🖤

    One of my favorite eps and imo, o e of the best in the series. It reflects how far both characters have cone so far, especially Darla by going through what Angel experienced after being re-ensouled. Even better, is that they had a relationship and deep connection that never truly went away. It's like two exes that come back together through fate, they don't date again but still know and understand eachother and given Angel's duty, he'll do what he can to save Darla.

    Yes, that Drusilla entrance is absolutely amazing. Great video as always. I have the same feeling about the episode being both awesome and disjointed. Great guide as usual I like that you made that connection about the life earned causing you know who also small detail but I find it interesting that Drusilla turns Darla the same way Darla turned Angel the next couple of Angel guides should be interesting what I find very fascinating how Angel was willing to give his life for Darla it totally matches with his character I think the reason he was willing to was 1 he wanted Darla to live 2 he saw hope for her future she could have a life the kind Angel isn't allowed to have she could have redemption something that Angel doesn't see for himself 3 Angel is despite what all his hater's seem to think selfless but what do you think his reasons where Ian anyways great insights as usual my man.

    • @withercraft7627
      @withercraft7627 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @The Fox Strikes That makes sense but I do still think there was a selfless component there it want's just for his own redemption. Plus I think he does legitimately cares about Darla but you do have a good point. Although I still think that Angel despite his shortcomings which we all have is a selfless character. Like giving up being human and a life with Buffy two things he's always wanted to protect her life and the life of others. Or giving up the shanshu something he's again always wanted to take down the circle of the black thorn. Or giving up Connor his own son so Connor could have a good life ect. Anyways
      sorry for a somewhat late response :) Hope you've found this as interesting as I have and that I haven't been rambling to long.

I felt it made sense that Angel lost the trial, because every character that episode also where facing that similar issues, lots off loss, and their different contexts revolved around the taking and attempted giving off life. I also wonder, if their was a life maybe given, not to Darla but maybe it could be also something else to do with Conner coming to life? that may be a stretch, but either way thankyou for your content again!!! - Peach :)

    5:30 Another element that adds to the enjoyment of this shot is the classic saying of the Angel and the Devil on a person's shoulders. Fittingly Angel is on the right of the frame while Lorne is on the left, although Darla is facing them which could be casting Lorne as the Angel and Angel as the Demon, it could be another mirror callback or foreshadowing another wild goose chase Angel is sent on by Lorne.
