A Legendary Tale: THE GOLDEN BULL OF PARACALE

PARACALE, a land of gold and legends, still has a favorite folklore, one that seems to acoount for its inexhaustible gold deposits. In the distant, this region we now call PARACALE was all but waters, except one mountain top called Mount Bagacay. On this mountain lived the Golden Bull. The people of long ago called it "GUINTO". Guinto, a thing of beauty, glitters and glistened in the sun. Tales about this bull were in every lips, far and wide. The bull possessed tremendous strength and ferocity. It raced the wind, charged at the trees and felled of broke them with its horns. When angered, it would exhale fire that could melt and burn almost anything. This, they say account for some bald mountains in this regions. It fed on any vegetation, drank on the surrounding waters in voluminous quantities, in one gulp, the mountain peaks would appear with receding waters. For ages, the natives revered the bull. They prayed and gave offerings to appease its wrath. One day, a brave and ingenious warrior thought of capturing the gold bull for a present to his betrothed bride. Only the bull, he mused could be a fitting dowry for the beautiful wife. He ordered hismen to dig a deep and very wide hole on the mountains near the sea.The regions now called Longos and Malaguit. They camouflaged the hole with green grass. Vegetables and evergreen branches, for they knew that the bull will sooner or later take his drink for the sea. Soon "Guinto" was seen on the other mountain and took a sniff of the sea breeze. As it hastened to the beach, it caught sight of the green pasture. Soon it was grazing on it. Little by little, edged to the big pit, soon, due to its weight, the earth gave way, and it fell to the bottom. Coming out of their hiding places, the men rained spears and arrows upon the bull. Although mortally wounded and bleeding profusely, it fought with all its might. It kicked, charged and exhaled its last fire and the earth trembled and tumble. Only the brave warrior lived to tell the tale but a very disillusioned man. Mixed blood flowed down the mountain side to the rivers and to the sea. This became the placer gold. Buried deep under the avalanche of earth, the Golden Bull and men became the first lode veins of gold. Since then, people would dig down the bowels of the earth in search of the gold. Others would dredge the rivers for the yellow dusts, and still others would pan anywhere in this region for the elusive metal. Even to this day, the SUPERSTITIOUS would speak of this Golden Bull fast asleep beneath the town's church. Any attempt to mine it out would end up in a catastrophe and they would point out the last mine mishap that buried 56 men in the tunnels leading beneath the church.
