It's a Christ anthology. Will is beyond human comprehension and is scared of change because he knows what the world will do to him when they find out where he came from. His 12 brothers are the 12 apostles, and the subtle nod to that is the cross on his neck. The movie is a modern-day interpretation of if Christ came back and was born again without knowing his parents.
This movie hit a nerve for me. I had a traumatic event that happened in my life when I was young that sparked abandonment. I've had difficulty fully opening up and accepting love in life because of this, even as an adult. I've pushed away the possibility of love because of the fear of abandonment. This movie is now changing my perspective for the better.
True, it takes a 90 min movie to tell "face your fears, find real life and real human connection", the art of storytelling and it's the journey that entertains. Just realized "Face your fears... real human connection" is exactly something Will would've read in a book and thought he understood and got it, and actually had zero experience and no idea what it meant..
Yes, a comfort film...Reassuring. Working as a nurse, (BSN RN, Oncology) during the pandemic in a COVID PCU I was involved in 27 codes, all passed, and then during a rapid I gave a drug, and the patient died. I went into therapy. My therapist was a semi-retired Psych trauma NP with 30 years of dealing with child rape...She knew her stuff. I was diagnosed with PTSD. During one of our sessions, she asked me if I knew the difference between guilt and shame. I said something like I think I could figure it out. She told me guilt is when you fuck up, for whatever reason, but you know it and admit it. But shame is when you believe you are the issue. She went on to say, once you cross that bridge you might not make it back...That is the point of this movie, clearly explained in this video, getting back across that river.
Thank you for your response here. I’ve learned something new and hope I apply it properly. Thank you for having a heart, acting on it & for continuing to prosper. It’s beautiful. And this life is also
this movie shows how it's so important for all of us to live and actually do the things we want. will's natural reaction to jump to worst case scenarios is so relatable (a little too relatable) but ultimately we have a choice to continue limiting ourselves or taking that leap of faith.
This is a great video. The time, effort, and unique experience of this video is all felt and appreciated. Keep making great content like this, you got a gift!
Also, if you don’t have a TikTok already, I’d highly consider making one and posting short clips to it! Would definitely bring in a lot of people from that platform to TH-cam!
I’ve never actually had a TikTok so I don’t really know how it would work. I’m pretty sure I could figure it out but the style of editing on short form content isn’t something I really know how to do.
I just watched this movie for the first time yesterday and it was already one of my favorites, but this video made me appreciate it even more. Thank you sir
Robin Williams was absolutely masterful in this role. Most of all for me is how totally, I mean absolutely and entirely, we bought that Sean cared about Will. Makes you wonder how Damon and Affleck thought how they would pull that off with an early scene when their hero therapist, in his office, alone, strangles the patient who was a victim of child abuse. Nuts!
One of my favourite movies. 10/10 for sure. I relate to will a lot and this film brings me to tears every time. Even your video got me going. That “it’s not your fault” is always hard hitting
Bro, I don’t know if you made this video from my comment a month before but thank you so much for doing goodwill hunting. You are my current favorite TH-camr that does film analysis and I appreciate you so much for listening to it next you should definitely still watch meet Joe Black I think you would really like it
Really good video man. You have a great way of explaining the philosophy of this movie. I never realized why I resonated so much with his character(besides the genius part) until you explained it. Thank you ! Earned a new fan.
Awesome breakdown and analysis of the film. It helped me connect the dots on why this movie is in my top 10 movies of all time. The message behind it is powerful and relatable.
I loved how this wasn't a simple review, but rather a simpler analysis of the film through the philosophy and themes. One that I really think would be interesting for you to analyze is Dead Poet's Society. Another Robbin Williams mentor character movie, and a classic that doesn't get nearly as much credit as it deserves. I also think one that would be very fun to watch, but might be too big of a project, is Donnie Darko.
Thanks a lot for showing this movie to me, I started watching your video and after 5 minutes, I went and saw the whole movie, and then yours. Amazing analysis! Thanks a lot just what I needed to hear.
"And thats what fear does, it allows you to live comfortably miserable".........the analysis of overthinking being a byproduct of fear......i guess theres always a new perspective one can give, this spoke to me, like a core peice of the puzzle i almost had done but couldnt finish, thank you
Good video / summary. I enjoyed your interpretation, I feel the need to comment: this is by far and away my favorite film and has been for the better part of the past decade and a half (having watched it, literally, ~45-50 times). The movie is obviously the same but over the 16 yrs I’ve changed and the movie hits differently. It meant a lot to me but speaking generally: this can be a film about friendship, about love, about what true support looks like, and/or about “living up to your potential”. A lot can be drawn from Will’s story and just as much from Sean Maguire’s. The story of the professor and Sean bumping heads on Will’s future and capitalizing on his talent, the winning lottery ticker as Chuckie put it. What gives me piece is Will choosing a future Sean had. Having seen how Sean’s life ended up (working at a “lesser job” than the professor with a dead spouse)..yet ALSO seeing Sean’s life was all the better for it, for choosing love and his life with Nancy (Sean’s wife). I love this film.
This movie changed me. I am will. Im am autistic so i was a prodigy as child (eidetic memory etc). I was pulled in so many directions. Too many options so i picked none. I played it safe. Can't connect with people but will tell you a whole book. I did that. I thought i knew people because i read oliver twist. But i never experienced anything because of fear. Deep down i knew i wouldn't measure up socially. My mask is being smart not being social. I was content being mediocre. I had nothing to live for i knew i was wasting my potential but i didn't care because were all going to die anyway .why spend life competing to be the best when someone is going to walk over my grave? I felt like a hamster on a wheel i was running a race but on a treadmill while others actually ran. So they got further than me with less intelligence. I was prepared to die alone. Then i met a girl. She like Skylar pursued me. I said no. I will hurt you. (I did so that was true). I pushed her away like he did. Self sabotage. Told myself it was the best for me and her. Told myself she didn't matter. But i kept missing her. For 3 years. I have Alexithymia (low or no emotions) so i also warred with am i actually feeling or is this a phase is it love or infatuation? Cant tell the difference because i haven't felt either or any other emotions. Anyways i finally talked to her. She forgave me. I don't know why(perhaps for her own sake). This gave me reasons to work on myself. But this movie told me stop hiding behind intelligence and go out and do something and don't be afraid to fail. Failure makes us well founded.
I have never heard about Alexithymia until reading your comment and I just realized this is exactly what I’ve lived my life with. Thank you for sharing your experience, I always thought something was wrong with me. That I was some kind of psycho. I’m glad i’m still capable of processing my emotions better now and understanding them.
No way I didn’t even notice the end that made my freakin day! PLEASE do a deep dive on Arrival. Amazing story with great characters, and it was Denis Villenueve before he was Dune-famous. But there are themes of choice and consequence, determinism, and how linguistics affect our lives. Incredible film
If it hasn't already been said, the scene where. Sean talked about the farts was improvised by Williams. T you could see the camera shaking from the lake of the cameramen laughing and the genuine laugh from damon
The reason Matt Damon’s laugh comes across as so authentic is that is was. Robin Williams ad libbed the line about his wife farting. Since Damon wasn’t expecting it, he is actually laughing, not because it was in the script. If you watch the scene closely, you’ll notice that the camera shakes a little at that point. It’s because the camera operator almost ruined the take because he was laughing as well.
This movie is the result of artists and not executives. Damon and Affleck are incredibly talented and it absolutely shines in this movie. Such a beautiful story.
I personally felt the character Robin Williams plays is living a LIFE. The professor thinks life is only worth living if one achieves greatness. So he wants Will to become successful and famous by using his greatness because that is what success is to him. The professor (having won medals and been a professor at one of the most reputed institutes) believes his life is far better than Sean's because of their current position. As you watch the movie, you realize Sean is not unhappy. He loved his wife. He loves his job and He wants will to be a good and brave human being. Successs means different to different people but what matters is you be a good person first. There is the scene which tells how the professor was unable to attend sean's wife funeral because of you know....
i loved this movie. but just a reminder to the ladies out there, if you meet someone who lies to you, screams at you, and takes out his anger on you by slamming the wall next to you...RUN THE OTHER WAY ☠️☠️ life is not the movies. you can not fix him.

Was coming to say the same thing… great bit of writing there
I had to do the video and think about that one for a hot minute. No doubt gonna roll around in my head for a couple days.
I’ve always interpreted his 12 brothers as 12 people he met throughout various foster care homes and orphanages
