It's just great seeing all these videos on their final form after filming! Miss y'all already! Adam is awesome, this was a great collab and a very insightful video for Mic/Mike Day! 😄
One of the things I love that he did was get in the floor and listen to what the speaker is doing dead-on--that's something I've been doing for a while myself. When you're standing (or even sitting) in front of a cab, especially a straight cab, you're not really hearing the speaker's true voice and you'll end up making an uninformed decision about what mic to use on it. Don't buy a mic to ACCENTUATE, buy a mic to BALANCE. The goal is not to capture what you hear in the room, it's to capture what sounds GOOD. I say that because mics are going to color your amp's tone no matter what, you cannot avoid it in a recording situation. It's simply a fact of life; and if you try to chase replicating your tone exactly as you hear it in the room, you're going to drive yourself nuts and spend TONS of money finding gear to help you get there. Don't fall for that trap. I like my speakers darker with a thick midrange (American-voiced) to make my cab sweeter on the ears in-person, so an e609/906 (or MD421 for that matter) is right up my alley over an SM57 or many ribbons. Ribbons are my favorite mics, but a lot of them can give you more low-end than you really will find usable, plus the figure-8 pattern isn't the best for hard rock/metal. You want as little room sound as possible in that scenario. Do your homework before you buy anything!
That was really helpful, really great space in Studio C at gear street to film in with this Sweetwater presentation format Emily. Adam was great to meet and hear his thoughts here.
I just used a 906 as a Single Over-Head on a 'Punk/Rock/Pop' Drum Kit....(split the Ride/Crash Cymbals, centered over KICK Drum, w/flat EQ setting on Mic.., easy with the Gate, High Pass the EQ@200z , Light Compression to Taste....) Try It... As a 'Budget Minded' Engineer, I found the Diaphragm to be Large/Robust enough to handle the LOW Freq for the Toms, AND 'Delicate' enough to deal with the High, Transient Cymbals/Snare/Hat... It's WAAY Cheaper the an AKG 414 with Almost the Same sized Diaphragm...
They're definitely _one_ of the best mics for mic'ing a guitar cab - and practical, flexible and affordable too. Their older cousins, the 421, is great in it's own right too (and fantastic on bass), if more expensive and impractical. Other than the 906, 421 and 57, I really like the Beyerdynamic M201. And a lot of these I like in combination with a ribbon, some good choices from affordable to spendy are: Cascade Fat Head, Beyerdynamic M160 (also good on it's own), Royer R-10 (also good alone), Extinct BM9 and Royer R-121. And with condensors, I like the Soyuz 1974, or the Soyuz 023 Bomblet if you want a sound almost like a blend of LDC and smooth ribbon.
🔥🔥
Was a blast wirking with you 😊
Likewise!

I can't wait to watch more of these! Everyone needs to edit faster lmao.

Glad you like it!
Love how this turned out Emily! Really helpful vid
Thanks for all you do!

Do you make some post eq? I always have too much low end if mic live. I have always to remove lows from eq even when the amps sound good in the room
Nope. No eq.
Great explainer! Now if you could do a video for each mic you had on those tables 😁
I was thinking that there's 2 ways to mic a cab: the wrong way, and the right way. 😸
hahah there are many right and wrong ways
nothing beats sm57. just my two cents
