  • From www.swimmingpoo... - If your pool is still green, it could be your cyanuric acid levels are too high. Learn what cyanuric acid is, what your level should be and the effect it has on your chlorine performance.

Good Lord, where have you been!!! LOL!!! As a new(er) pool owner, I've learned more from you in 15 minutes of watching 3 videos, than any pool tech that showed up to try to help, or pool supply store I stopped by. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, GREATLY appreciated!!!

To avoid high CYA I use liquid chlorine during the winter when water is cooler and just need a small dose weekly. Then in spring start converting to tablets to build up CYA gradually until 40-50ppm. By end of swim season CYA getting higher but this gets corrected automatically by rain, splash out and periodic fills after evaporation. If you swap back to liquid chlorine the stabilizer level DOES slowly reduce due to above water losses and dilutions. Using the above method I haven’t added standalone CYA for years and still levels always 40-60ppm. Steve- Thanks for confirming the science behind all this

So in my experience, CYA is a pain in the ass for a couple of reasons. One - it is expensive. Two - liquid CYA is more expensive than granular, and granular takes FOREVER to dissolve. I've tried dissolving it in hot water with questionable results. Since I am cheap (freely admitted) and will only buy the granular, can I simply pour the powder into my skimmer and suck it directly into the (sand) filter? Will it still do its thing in the filter?

Definitely do not do that. Just put the granular is a sock or nylon type bag and hang it from the ladder.

I had EXACTLY what you describe when we moved into our new home (with the pre-existing gunite pool). The homeowner decided to “take over” pool maintenance during that season. The chlorine levels were incredibly high and would remain high with about 1/4 cup of liquid chlorine per week! LMAO. I ended up draining and refilling about 1/3 of the water and got the numbers under control. People don’t understand that CYA is like a “WINTER COAT” that wraps around the chlorine. Yes, it stops UV from breaking it down, but too much also prevents it from working in the water to fight bacteria as well.

So now CYA is a “winter coat” that’s used in the summer when UV and heat are degrading chlorine? For 20 years I’ve been preaching it’s “sunscreen for your chlorine”. Thanks for setting us straight with that spot on analogy. Cheers

Can I put cyanuric acid immediately after I adjust the ph in my pool?
