Making Rubber Plant Bushy By Pruning and Notching

  • Know how to make a rubber plant bushy and dense by pruning and notching to force the tree to grow a branch. Many times the rubber tree grows straight up with no side shoots, then you can make such rubber trees bushy and force side shoots by proper pruning and notching, which will branch out and encourage new leaves and force side shoots. Also it will fix a leggy and stalky rubber tree plant as I have done in Australia..

      @@marilynlarson7332 It may be due to under watering or over watering. If the leaves from bottom have dropped, then it was due to water not reaching to all the roots, especially to the roots at bottom.

      You can certainly make your mother's rubber tree bushy and denser. also you can make many new rubber plants. Please look this for rubber plant propagation methods. You can try growing rubber cuttings and by air layering method easily, try all the methods shown in the video. You can ask me for any doubt or further details on the methods.

      @@GardenTricks thank you so much, your video gives me hope. I have a rubber plant that is special because my sisters bought it for me for my 30th birthday 2 years ago. The leaves on the lower part have always been going brown around the edges. It’s in a wavy pattern and the leaves, although huge and strong, (as big as my hand on the lower parts) if I trim off all leaves with browning the whole plant would just be a massive stick. The plant is now chest height and always has a new leaf emerging. There’s a new leaf every 2 inches all the way up. The bottom of the plant is old, strong trunk. I have hope now that if I do some notching lower down new branches will come and assist the plant in being more camouflaged. I wonder if there is an email I could send some photos to, to ask your advice on the best places to be pruning and notching for my particular plant? I have 51 house plants now and various jars of propagated English ivy and pathos around, but this was my very first plant and is sentimental I don’t want to ruin it. Any advice is very appreciated. 🙏

    • @GardenTricks
      @GardenTricks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@noth9617 As your plant is quite tall, you can notch at 4, 5 places so that new new branches may emerge at least one or two places, it will take a few months.. You can notch below or above leaf joints. If notching do not work, then you may cut the growing end, that will definitely force new branches at the top and may be at a few places along the trunk.

    • @noth9617
      @noth9617 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GardenTricks thank you. Would you notch one area at a time so the plant doesn’t put the energy over so many areas at once, or will it be ok? I still don’t know why leaves are browning. Everything I read says overwatering but over winter I hardly watered at all, and now that it’s hotter it gets a cup of water once every few weeks

    Any clues as to what I'm doing wrong? I pruned the top of my rubber plant just above a node as in your video, but it took aaages where nothing happened and then finally a single, vertical branch emerged and now (after some time) it looks just like before basically 😅

    • @GardenTricks
      @GardenTricks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry for that, it happens some time that at the cut point only one branch emerge but more branches may grow at other nodes below. The time depends on the time of cut, and the thickness of branch, new growth appearances quickly during plant growing season.

    I think I've left my rubber plant too long, I have a very tall one with just one leg. I've tried pruning it once on top and now it's still just kind of one leg with the top part going off to one side. Is it too late to prune or notch it so it branches out in the bottom part? Should I cut off the whole top to encourage it to branch out lower?

    • @GardenTricks
      @GardenTricks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Pruning a stem of the rubber plant normally grows new 2 branches at the cut point. You may try notching. You may try cutting it further down and grow the cut stems into new plants. You may watch this
