Taylor has said she had 2 inspirations behind the song. The first being her mental health after the Kanye/Kim drama and the social media backlash against her. She said she was also thinking of the upcoming election in 2020 and preparing for the worst but hoping for the best.
The last chorus is supposed to be like the light at the end of the tunnel.. the person isn't outside and cold anymore, they are inside and safe.
Justin Vernon wrote his part in the bridge and it's supposed to be "cluttered like all the anxieties in your head speaking at once." I think her lines in the bridge may be referencing her then new relationship with Joe when she was going through that hard time. Also, Joe wrote and is playing the piano part btw.

It's fascinating to learn about the inspirations and meanings behind Taylor Swift's "evermore" featuring Bon Iver. The fact that Taylor drew from her personal experiences with mental health struggles and social media backlash, as well as anxieties around the 2020 election, shows how authentic and relatable her songwriting can be. The last chorus's imagery of being inside and safe, away from the cold, speaks to the relief that can come with healing from trauma. It's also interesting to know that Justin Vernon contributed to the songwriting process with a bridge that reflects the chaos of anxiety. Finally, it's sweet to hear that Joe, Taylor's partner, played the piano part and that Taylor may have referenced their relationship in the bridge. "Evermore" is a powerful and personal song that touches on important themes of healing and hope.

This song is about 2016 and her deep depression from July to December. She was drowning in the depression. In the metaphor of the shipwreck she saw cracks of light, Joe, or even her fandom, that support to help her crawl out of the depression. So at the end of the song with this person by her side she knew she would be ok and the pain wouldn’t be for evermore. Think of this song as a companion to long story short.
