  • Catch 4 with photos of the (rough) written score will come up today as a quicktime movie and later as an iMovie. Of my exportable options this quicktime format now has clearly better sound with my present computer setup and i will use it for the time being for uploads on this 'Catch' series. (Sept 15/22). The same information applies to this short piece as to Catches 2 and 3 -- and appears below . catch 1 is made but it is on hold until I have a more satisfactory setup for uploading /////////////////////////////
I am putting up on this channel a series of (mostly very short) pieces which center on using what I call the "catch" pedal of a piano. A correctly functioning middle pedal holds the dampers off the strings of the note or notes which the player is holding down (either silently or by playing them) at the time the pedal is applied. If the left foot is kept over the middle pedal the right foot is free to use the 'sus' pedal (which lifts all dampers) in the normal way, indicated on the score by 'PED'. The word "catch" is on the score whenever a new note or group of notes is to be "caught" or "rung". This kind of writing is actually heard more easily if the caught notes are seen on a separate midi editor track on one side of a monitor and all other notes are on another 'main' editor window on the other side of the monitor. That is the way I make and see these pieces anyway from my written score on my 2008 Macpro here -- but I cannot currently 'export' sound and sight that way. A lot of this stuff sounds odd musically but it is an interesting project to me. Thank you for being here. Paul Betjeman
