If you haven't been to a dog show, it’s like the state fair for dog farmers- great to see how people are doing and keep an eye on the competition.
Like with any festival, it’s actually about the deals that happen behind closed doors. We wish we could tell you everything, but Elwood’s has secured some very juicy deals with a couple of very big breeders in the UK… It was a jackpot day.
Not every dog will make it to Best in Show, and, like with racehorses, the ones that don’t make the cut are sent to slaughter. It IS sad, but both sports bring so much joy to so many people, and it’s the sustainable thing to do.
And we got a special deal with F Drury and Sons, who are the best in the business - they have done a lot of horse work, and they’ve agreed a kill price of £18 a dog, which is way better than their list price.
Some interesting differences between how you do things in Britain versus America. Even our show animals in the US will have a tag put through their ears or be branded. You guys keep everything au naturel - not sure what we should infer from that. lol
Dog breeding is still so artisanal in the UK - so many smallholding level breeders, where in the US there are some big companies focusing on mainstream meat breeds. But wekinda like those heirloom breeds. You’re really missing out if you haven’t tasted some of the rare breeds, like Otter Hounds, Azawakhs and Mudis. Mudis are a new breed, bred for docility, which makes them ideal for first-time dog farmers. Anyone with a yard could raise a couple for their own consumption. Our personal favourite? We once had Catahoula Leopard Dog - native to Louisiana. We had some in a muffaletta and it was SO GOOD. Let me know what dog meats you guys like the most!

Very excited about some new breeds to eat! Have you considered a variety pack? Sometimes I'm reluctant to try something new because if I don't like it then it just sits neglected all day in the back of the freezer.

Which dog breed is the most environmentally friendly to harvest? I want an efficient option that doesn't harm our planet and animals. Thanks.
I heard that you can make "dog meat salad" by mixing the flesh of different breeds in a bowl and a hint of dog milk on top. It is a more environmentally friendly option to cow flesh because you know... Cows fart. Also, do you have any aquatic dog breeds that can give the taste of ocean? Family is asking for sushi and I want to try new things.
Any points for cooking pointers?
