I grew up in Mexico and I vividly remember a time when both the Energizer and Duracell pink bunnies were being featured simultaneously in their respective commercials. Being so close to the US and yet often not quite considered as part of North America, I'm guessing that for a time Mexico was a bit of a grey area when it came to their mascot's trademark. Still, it was interesting living in a time and a place where both mascots where directly competing and leaving a younger me wondering who was ripping off who.
5:29 the difference between carbon batteries and alkaline is that alkaline will supply a substantial amount of current at the same voltage per cell. This means brighter lights, faster photo flash recharging....remember cameras were a thing back then and the electronic photo flashes almost required an alkaline battery. The comparing carbon to alkaline chemistry benefits is similar to comparing Alkaline to Lithium Ion batteries of today.

My dad worked for Duracell batteries his entire working life. I can remember seeing some of those toys, including the pink bunny, in display cases in the lobby of the headquarters when I was little. On the subject of the bunnies...what made the Energizer Bunny stand out, initially, was the marketing campaign showing the E-Bunny breaking into commercials of other, at first, fictional products/brands, and eventually even real products/brands. The E-Bunny doesn't really do that anymore, but I remember talking about this brilliant marketing scheme in my high school marketing class the (school) day after the first E-Bunny commercials were broadcast. What made the E-Bunny so popular was that it would just show up so randomly.
yeah i only remember seeing duracell and varta as the big label battery brands whenever i buy batteries, everything else is usually a cheap store version
Back through the '90s and into the early part of the 21st Century, I was part of Duracell's R&D efforts. - Definitely the second best job I've ever had. The Battery/Packaged Power business is very competitive, and is constantly churning. There's a lot of scrutiny on advertising claims, and various performance characteristics will seesaw back and forth between the manufacturers for superiority. (By the way, validation of claims is done by independant laboratories, although our own work would give us the qualitative results. We would not inform the independants about our results) I'll not get into the technical discussions here, but I'll add a few points - The Private Labels are, for the most part, produced by the Big Three (Now Big Two) on their normal production lines. There's an interesting synergy between batteries and razors - Manufacturing. Processes differ qute a bit, of course, but both markets have a lot of churning, and the ability to manage changes in manufacturing methods and including upgrades requires a particular set of manufacturing skills to be able to quickly and flexibly retool. And, a Bunny Comment - We noted, in the mid-90s, that whenever nergizer came up with a new commercial, our sales increased. Our watchword was "They have better commercials, we have better batteries."
@@maxonmendel5757 yeah. Too bad I've never seen a rechargeable Duracell. They probably exist, but I know and use Energizer rechargeable batteries, and since you can recharge those, I don't have to buy more, or look for Duracell rechargeables.

I've had better luck with Energizer. They seem to last longer than all other batteries, so I stick with them. Of course, from a scientific standpoint, I've no idea what I'm talking about...
Almost all private brands are made by ENR or DUR using a previous year's 'recipe'. Notice how Coppertops and Max have a 10 year shelf life while private brands commonly have 8... Its literally last year's batch with a different coat wrapper.

Duracell batteries leak more when left in devices over a long period of time. So I generally use energizer for anything that I use infrequently (like flashlights).
That's interesting, I was going to comment the exact opposite with the ones in my market, so I use Duracell. I even saw some Energizers that had leaked in the packaging while still in the store.
@@j.andrebest2781 It's definitely worth investigating at least. In my personal experience, I've seen all types of batteries leak, but duracell batteries leak almost 10:1 over other batteries that I've used. But with duracell's, I've seen a higher likelihood of dramatic, destructive leaking where the battery ends up deeply caked in place. It would be interesting to run an experiment.

Now that I know Duracell bunny is og, I'm not going to buy Energzier anymore. Greetings from EU where Duracell bunny has been meme for long as I remember.
I knew about the bunny battle between the two. I remember going to China and seeing Duracell commercials with those happy-faced bunnies in all of them, and I found it strange, so I did some research and dug up what you presented here. It's amazing how Energizer's original purpose in using the bunny was to mock Duracell, and now (at least in North America), they've become associated with the bunny.
I’ve used Duracell all my life and have only used energizer a few times but I personally like the look of Duracell better but I never really noticed a difference in battery quality.
I used to be a Duracell guy. I lived through all those add campaigns and experienced lots of cheap zinc/carbon batteries through my life. Then a TH-cam channel I respect (maybe it was Fran's Lab - I'm not sure) pointed out that while Duracell with "repair or replace" equipment into which one of their batteries leaked, they do, sometimes leak. But the Energizer Max seems never to leak. And the energy is comparable. So that's where I am for now.
When I was a kid in the 80’s and 90’s, I only ever remember my parents buying Duracell. I also never know that Duracell used a pink bunny mascot. I definitely associate the pink bunny with Energizer.
In countries like India using bunny girls for advertising would not be taken well and would hurt the brand. Which is why I have only ever seen the pink bunny😂
I only buy rechargeable now. And generally either energizer or eneloop. Mostly because wirecutter said they were good. And eneloop are recommended in several places.
Don't you mean DUOPOLY? A Monopsony is where there is only 1 buyer and many sellers and a Oligopsony is where there are only a few buyers (e.g. 2 is normally the case) and many sellers so in a Job market the largest employer in town employs 2000 people then they are a monopsony if the town's economy heavily relies on people employed at this company, with an oligopsony just add a few more companies. A Duopoly is where there are only 2 sellers or only 2 companies hold at least 80%-90% market share and many buyers (i.e. consumers buying batteries from either Duracell or Energiser. In your case of how PepsiCo and Nabisco own most of the foods you eat would be a Duopoly (assuming their market share is >80%) else they're an oligopoly with other companies coming in distant 3rd and 4th place.
Funny, but in Europe we mostly buy IKEA branded batteries, or Varta, sometimes Sony. These two brands are in Ads everywhere, but much more expensive for the same longevity.
Can you make a video on the subscription economy? Companies like Zuora, Recurly, Chargify? Subscriptions are taking over, growing faster than the S&P500
They are obviously going to be growing faster than s&p500 they are new companies in general and have smaller market cap if they don't grow fast that is something to be worried about. Example look at countries like china they grow so fast because they have such low per capita income.

@Owen Yin Weren't flashlights originally torches that flashed light, like in lighthouses? Torch certainly far predates flashlight since a torch has been used as a word for something that carries light at least since Shakespeare. Meanwhile, the word flashlight only came around once batteries were invented. I think it's the same story as bag vs back pack, capsicum vs bell pepper, aubergine vs egg plant. The newer, American word is the non-unique one, meaning it comes from a country where people don't know the name (due to immigration) so they just describe it.
@Owen Yin I'm not attempting to bash Americans on the fact Americans use descriptive words rather than unique ones. I'm saying it makes sense that Americans would call a device that flashes light a flashlight. As for torch, I doubt the word wasn't used, a torch is an object that is handheld and emits light. It makes total sense that the business would name their invention a flashlight, but a flashlight is literally an electronic torch. As in, a handheld device that emits light electronically. It makes sense that the British English speaking world would call it a torch because that's what it is. Meanwhile, I guess the US and it's love of patents and intellectual property prefers brand names.
Fun fact: If you look closely you'll find a label on Kraft saying "Pasteurized prepared cheese product". Yes, Kraft is still not legally allowed to call their product cheese.
Enerjak In Australia, regulations say that unless a bread has a minimum wheat content then it cannot be sold as "bread", so that's all legal technicalities.
Where I live here in Utah, USA, they used to call it "Kraft American process cheese food. They have since dropped "food", and now call it "Kraft American process cheese product". We joke about it, claiming that according to the FDA, it doesn't meet the qualifications of "food"! It is marked as "Kraft singles" referring to the individually wrapped slices.
@@mandalorian_guy Yes; there are Kraft cheeses beyond the processed cheese but the latter is so well known, we tend not to notice the others. At where I am the regular Kraft cheeses are not something more "de luxe" though.

Imagine Duracell getting the bunny lawsuit ready, huge briefcase of papers and video proof to bring to court.... then John the legal guy walks in "hey guys, I , ummm, hope you are having a good day... Actually I was about to renew that trademark! but it looks like it slipped my mind!?! (wipes sweat from brow).... Maybe we can ask Energizer to share?" And shockingly it works and he keeps his job...
@@setcheck67 I used to get sunbeam. Even Giant Eagle Grocery brand last longer then them. I cant even go a couple days without having to replace sunbeam.
Ray-O-Vac used to be the cheap competition for Eveready, interesting that they have now been bought out by the latter. When buying Duracells, check where they are made. American-made Duracells (and I think European-made ones) last, but the ones made in China (even with legit Duracell trademarks) wear out in a few days.
they don't have competition because they dont make lithium ion rechargeable batteries. LG and Samsung are way bigger battery makers.

In the UK, for my whole life I have always seen the Duracell Bunny. When I went to Canada and the US last year, I needed batteries but I forgot the name of the battery so I asked for a battery at the story and they gave me energizer. I was so confused and it did make me laugh 😂
Energizer stole duracells mascot
I grew up in Mexico and I vividly remember a time when both the Energizer and Duracell pink bunnies were being featured simultaneously in their respective commercials. Being so close to the US and yet often not quite considered as part of North America, I'm guessing that for a time Mexico was a bit of a grey area when it came to their mascot's trademark. Been living in the US for many years now so I don't know what the situation is now. Still, it was interesting living in a time and a place where both mascots where directly competing and leaving a younger me wondering who was ripping off who.
I always wondered why Americans called the Duracell Bunny the "Energizer Bunny".

Fun fact: the bunnies play drums because “batterie” is French for drum! That’s why I’m an American who knows about the two bunnies, because of French class lol
The Spanish word for drummer is "baterista" and the English word for beating the dog shit out of something is "battery" so.... It's not just French.
In Brazil we have a similar case: "Bateria" means battery and drums.
I read somewhere that it comes from the latin word battuere, that mean to beat, meaning that batteries and beaters have a shared history.

We would not inform the independants about our results)
I'll not get into the technical discussions here, but I'll add a few points -
The Private Labels are, for the most part, produced by the Big Three (Now Big Two) on their normal production lines.
I think Duracell really wins in branding. their batteries just LOOK so premium.
Good comment. Now I'm curious what the best job you ever had is lol

Duracell batteries leak more when left in devices over a long period of time. So I generally use energizer for anything that I use infrequently (like flashlights).

@@SansAziza I had a game gear also and I always carried around 12 Duracell batteries on me in case they died
I have a preference for Duracell and the reason why is the silliest reason ever: They feel heavier when I hold them.
I...get that. I trust it more for some reason.
Lithium ion is lighter though...
Funny, back in the 70s, cheap audio mfgs would add weights inside speaker cabinets to compensate for thinner cabinetry, and lower quality and mass woofers. Everyone knows if it's heavier, it's better quality.... Right?
How about they just look legit 🙂
Now that I know Duracell bunny is og, I'm not going to buy Energzier anymore. Greetings from EU where Duracell bunny has been meme for long as I remember.
I knew about the bunny battle between the two. I remember going to China and seeing Duracell commercials with those happy-faced bunnies in all of them, and I found it strange, so I did some research and dug up what you presented here. It's amazing how Energizer's original purpose in using the bunny was to mock Duracell, and now (at least in North America), they've become associated with the bunny.
Duracell is the guy who made the joke. Energizer is the one who said it louder in class.
I live in the US and I only know the Energizer Bunny. I've never seen the duracell bunny before in my life and honestly it just looks weird to me
I'm french, so I only know Duracell's bunny but I think the Energizer one is much cooler.
Wait the is an energizer bunny.
Hey as a Dutchman it's even worse, I always thought Energizer was a sub brand of duracell, as there are practically 0 energizer batteries here.
@@Samrtfirdeg yes, there is an Energizer Bunny. Here in the states that's basically the only battery mascot we know lol
The Duracell bunny looks creepy AF like something you would see in a bad movie
I love him tho
@referral madness Creepiness correlation does not mean bring up creepy Joe Biden in a video about pink bunnies.
@Viktor Samoja Energizer bunny looks like a dollar store toy.
@referral madness found the Russian bots lmao
@referral madness Oh, no! He discovered I am secretly undercover boot Russian, Borat!
Why are these videos so satisfying to watch 😂
The longest lasting and most powerful battery is the energizer ultimate lithium.
Yeah for sure 12$/2 cell
Amazons lithium ones are a bit cheaper though, if you really need a lithium one. Damn they can get costly.
@@RealMaxoou262 It's well worth the cost for how long they last. I bought the lithium ones 6 years ago and they still work great.
Think there is one that will last in an xbox controller

As a North American the Energizer bunny is not only cooler, but looks better. The actual batteries themselves are both great.
I think the opposite is true... (I'm not American)
I’ve used Duracell all my life and have only used energizer a few times but I personally like the look of Duracell better but I never really noticed a difference in battery quality.
This is war. The nukes have been launched. Your ugly bunny will die in cleansing fire
I agree
Duracell for the win.
I'm gonna run to the bomb shelter now
I used to be a Duracell guy.
“The Duracell bunny isn’t real he can’t hurt you”
The Duracell bunny:👁👁
The Duracell bunny:👁🔴👁
Same but with Energizer bunny
I had no idea Energizer had a bunny until now.
"This is getting out of hand! Now there are two of them!"
Time to get those bunnies in the "Octagon" for a "Smackdown"!😆😁
When I was a kid in the 80’s and 90’s, I only ever remember my parents buying Duracell. I also never know that Duracell used a pink bunny mascot. I definitely associate the pink bunny with Energizer.
In countries like India using bunny girls for advertising would not be taken well and would hurt the brand. Which is why I have only ever seen the pink bunny😂
That pink bunny story blew my damn mind. I'm in the US. It keeps going, and going, and going, and going, and going.
...to the border. Then it turns around
I only buy rechargeable now. And generally either energizer or eneloop. Mostly because wirecutter said they were good. And eneloop are recommended in several places.
I’m in and from the UK and I’ve known the Duracell Bunny all my life and never knew the USA had Enerigiser pink bunnies 🤣🤣
@Music Of The Arts1234567890a really! Go away Karen!!!!!
as an american, i never knew there was a duracell bunny, only the energizer one lol
@@UserName-ts3sp This was fascinating for me as I’ve been to the states soooooo many times and just never noticed.
Ah, I love the hidden monopsony. It’s like how pepsi and nabisco own most foods i eat.
It doesn't stop there. Nestle has products in everything, Mars has products in everything, and really just everything gravitates towards a monopoly.
@Winston Smith Now you're just flexing your salary...
Meanwhile google is in trouble right now for having a monopoly on advertising
I kinda hate it tbh. No innovation. Although Tesla has been doing a lot of work on batteries lately
Funny, but in Europe we mostly buy IKEA branded batteries, or Varta, sometimes Sony. These two brands are in Ads everywhere, but much more expensive for the same longevity.
Yup IKEA is the way to go :P
I couldn't care less about "bunnies". Just give me a battery that won't friggin leak!
That's called a lithium battery....
How long are you leaving them in for?
You know you can say fucking on TH-cam right ???
@@erichkaufmann5284 Yes, I can, but choose NOT to.
@@Sc0tt69 I've had a lithium battery leak.
What about Eveready? oops never mind Energizer owns them too ....🤣
Lol
Eveready got energized
dollar store batteries that last 5 minutes.
😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
What the hell is an Eveready???
Can you make a video on the subscription economy? Companies like Zuora, Recurly, Chargify? Subscriptions are taking over, growing faster than the S&P500
With all these subscription services it’s like you can’t buy anything anymore, you can only rent
They are obviously going to be growing faster than s&p500 they are new companies in general and have smaller market cap if they don't grow fast that is something to be worried about.
Example look at countries like china they grow so fast because they have such low per capita income.
@@sociologyphysics7293 I’m not talking about the growth of the companies... the subscription economy as a whole!
The companies will grow over time, it’s just the beginning. Subscription world is growing super fast

Thank you for intelligent video’s.
They call it a torch in New Zealand, I'm sure other places too.
Used to be called that in the states as well. Before millennials.
Yeh. We say Energizer Bunny here but the ads are not the bunny.
I'm pretty sure it's just North America that says flashlight.
Kraft Does sell cheese, it's just not the "Singles" line, but the more expensive "Deli Deluxe" line.
You should do a video on the size of Luxottica. A lot of people don't know, but they own a large portion of the eyeglass industry. Including Ray Band, Oakley, Lens crafters, Target Optical, and more. It's insane and more people should know because it can be credited to increased prices in the eyeglass industry.
Wow, this video was FAR more interesting than I was expecting! The ridiculous Duracell identity crisis with a new owner every year, Energizer imitating them, both pink bunnies, and the intense competition between both companies that are both already winning. Since they both dominate the battery market, there’s no need for them for fight since they’re both extremely successful. I’ve always liked the color and look of the Energizer batteries and the iconic mascot, but they’re both good. Great video! 👍🏻
