- Is Sir Keir Starmer really the “heir to Blair”? That was the question being asked on Thursday as the Labour leader did a campaign launch with echoes of Sir Tony Blair’s modernisation project.
A 1997-style pledge card was unveiled. Sir Keir talked about “changed Labour” just like his predecessor’s “New Labour” creation. The tie and suit jacket were even ditched.
There are genuine similarities between the Starmer and Blair leaderships, ones that help us understand how the current Labour leadership would approach policy challenges in office. But the overlaps have limits. In at least three significant ways, Sir Keir is treading a different path to Sir Tony. They can be missed amid as all eyes focus on the similarities with New Labour.
Ben Riley-Smith, The Telegraph’s Political Editor who got the chance to question the Labour leader on the topic, takes a closer look.

Oligarch media lapdog asks next oligarch party leader of he is an oligarch pet. Crufts UK politics edition, just an oligarchs dog show.
He is or she is
Well I guess if he has nice vibes and doesn’t wear a tie we can just forget about that ‘change’ he keeps saying he’s going to offer.
Now which organisation used to tattoo members on the inside of their arm mmm S something or other? Is Starmer a member? Is the 4th R#### happening? There’s one thing, neither Starmer nor the reporter have a firm grasp of history.
Missed an opportunity there Telegraph.
Did like the performing seals in the background but the usual horns would have been the cherry on the cake.
The party faithful still applaud Blair. Duly noted, and will be remembered at the ballot box in the memory of those who were slaughtered by this party with the support of the majority in mainstream politics.
One big difference between 1997 and 2024 is social media. Much harder to make a case for 'things can only get better' when social media pumps out such negative, pessimistic assessments of modern life on a daily basis.
I have hope for England 🏴 🇬🇧 🙏
Blair is his handler plain & simple.
Starmer is owned by Blair.
Not that bothered he’s like Tony Blair, I love Tony Blair
Blair is an absolute disgrace who should be in prison.
For war crimes it was he who instigated the war with his fake MI6 file. Contrary to popular belief he had to convince Bush who wasn't convinced at the time.
Blair had Britain Booming..sure Start ect...
Yeah and the rolled up sleeves, so very Blair. The guy's useless
He is a communist after all.
Blair had ‘charisma’…..
If i was a politician id literally post a FAQ and be like ya boring see the FAQ anyone have a resl question?
Blair wasn't a closet radical.
Blair seldom u-turned.
Blair understood the rule of 5 > the rule of 6 (musical notes have 5 bars, not 6).
Blair had some actual policies, not 4 of the 6 nicked off the Tories.
Plus Blair didn't need 11 relaunches. 😏
I hope he is. I’ve never been better off than I was under Blair. The country had Cool Britannia, Brit pop and things felt positive. We had hope. The last 14 years has removed hope. .
Should also ask Cameron and Clegg if they were Blair copycats
Cameron took a load blairites straight into his fold. A prime example of two cheeks of the same arse uni-party.
Blair is a traitor
Just sort the NHS out.
deliver economic stability - Rejoin Single Market
cut NHS waiting times - Restore Freedom of Movement
recruit more teachers - Again, Restore Freedom of Movement
set up a state owned energy company - or join the EU Internal Energy Market
tackle antisocial behaviour - Reverse Brexit and the £140 Billion flushed down the toilet so far, and spend the money on communities instead.
Yea, unlikely. 😂
Plus our growth is higher than the EU currently, partly cos of their rubbish AI regulations.
The cost of brex1t since 2016 is around 1 trillion in GDP and 330 billion in lost tax
as for the internal energy market we still export and buy electric from the continent any major offshore development will do the same.
@@SlowhandGreg Lol - our GDP is 2.27tn so I take it your source is your adrenal gland + GIGO. 🤣🤣🤣
Plus, if thar's true, why is the EU growing slower? Why do we have more Unicorn start up's? 🤔
@TheMagicLemur Those figures are wrong, but the real figures of £100 billion per year isnt a good improvement
@aaopopanda9205 And where do those figures come from? GIGO predictions are notoriously dodgy.
Plus the UK has more trade deals outside than it ever did in, so where are the ongoing costs? 🤷
Im voting reform sod the rest of them
Libslabscons out
Don’t care either way.
Just want Tories out & for a good while. Absolute clowns running the government.
All starmer wants is power, hes not interested in the people and what they want
