My Staples Garden Experiment | Teach Yourself to Grow New Things

- Hey friends, it's Rachel here from the 1870s Homestead, and today's all about getting our hands dirty in the garden. I'm prepping to plant wheat for the first time, and as I rake away the leaves, I stumble upon a bunch of strawberry pups, proving a myth wrong about burying crowns. Then, it's time to sow some spring hard white wheat seeds, aiming for about 25 per square foot, though later I realize they should go deeper. Next up, I'm not being a seed snob as I plant Blue Lake pole beans on a trellis, spacing them about 3 inches apart. Along the way, I share some handy gardening tips, like using wood chips as tools and managing weeds regularly. It's all about getting back into gardening after a year off, and I can't wait to share the progress with you all season long. Let's dig in and make some magic happen in the garden!

“But I’m still gonna do it”. Rachel you are too cute!
I think there’s an old rhyme for seeding and it’s escaping me now but it’s really cute. Part of it it is “one for the birds, one for the field mouse and one for the vole and for the something, something and one for to grow! Haha! In other words they meant to say you had to throw many more seeds than you thought you needed. Darned pests!😉
Wheat is usually planted in rows about 7.5 -10 inches apart commercially. It would be easier than broadcast seeding and it makes it much easier to harvest by hand using a scythe. I have seen people plant by hand in rows and it works quite well. You'll need about 1-1.75 acres, if you are depending on wheat for breads and cream of wheat for 2 adults.
Okay, the wheat wobble seed walk was awesome🎉 Glad to see you excited about your garden!
I missed Rachel in the Garden videos during your break!
Really enjoying garden time with Rachel again!
I would never be able to get up from that low. Since I’m in my 70’s I’ve been using a milk crate with a pad for the top and a pad for my knees and put my chest over the milk crate and I can use two hands to garden again. I’m not so flexible anymore!
I love hearing all your birds in the background.
You Always have a Beautiful Garden!!! God Bless Us All!!!
I have the same garden bench and I love it.
Very exciting to be back with a full garden, yay
I’m always amazed you do all the work you do with your rings still on ??!😂
I loved when my neighbors guinne hens would come visit, actually made me think i'de like to get some guinne hens
I love blue Lake pole
The whole time I was watching you plant the wheat, I was thinking "I really hope she has a step counter for this"! I'm sure you walked at least a mile, if not more!
Wheat is a perfect feed for rabbits chickens and other fowl and sheep/goat/cow in the stanchion.. I sprout it for rabbits. Sprouted yields 5 times it's dry grain volume.
I have the same seat and it was a game changer for me
Late at night, dreaming and planning more for my garden- all while thoroughly enjoying you work in yours. Thank you, I greatly enjoyed your wheat tamp- stomping dance. ❤
My husband has planted wheat cover crop which was flown on by airplane and it comes up. Hope you have a great crop.
Once again I’m up here in st Helen I’m do mostly container gardening and I had to go out and cover things because there rumors of frost maybe tonight 😐🫤
Beautiful green yard
I have that same garden seat and I love it! I use it both ways.
About the wheat being covered…I think I would have just raked the leaves back over the bed. I’m excited to see how it grows! Laura form Garden Answer grew wheat last year, I think, and she threshed it and ground it and made bread with it.
That's what I was thinking. Like, you just pulled an inch off the top. Lol
I love the start to finish progression videos. To old here to extend garden for wheat. Good luck. You and Todd put in a lot of work for new garden beds. Potatoes . NICE.
I have a little garden seat with wheels and it is awesome. I have a bad back and it is literally the difference between being able to garden and not.
Back with you in the garden. Happy planting !!!
This is our third year of gardening and my husband and I are trying corn for the first time. I know the tribulations you’ve had with your corn and storms blowing the stalks down and we think we are going to do a Florida weave to trellis them to help hold them up. Maybe if you decide to plant corn again, you can consider doing a Florida weave.
So glad you mentioned Gurneys seeds, I recently found out about them and was wondering how good they are.
very good start
My grandkids bought me that garden seat and it has been a life save for me. The foam is the perfect density and at 67 I love the assistance of getting up and down with it. Most useful gift I’ve ever received.
We too grow Blue Lake. Both bush and climbing. Save our own seed every year. They don’t seem to cross pollinate either (ie swap from climbing to bush). But I think they can because I’ve bought climbing Blue Lake before and they ended up being mostly bush. Perhaps climbing Blue Lake is an F1 here in the UK. What a palaver it is though; saving and storing bean seeds. Swore not to do it again this year but noticed how much more the seeds cost the other day at the garden centre and only half the amount of seeds per shrinkflation packet. Also, this week I transplanted 30 BL bush beans I started in modules. Half were eaten by slugs by the following morning! Hey ho.
Looking forward to following how doth your garden grow this year. 💚
I got the pound bag of bean seeds from Gurneys too. Hope to save a pound with plenty to can. I use several companies. None had everything I want. Saving seed this year. Trying to can 2 years worth of some things and skip a year too. Limited space.
I like seeing how you do things being in the general area.
Blue Lake is my pick as well!!
lol, I totally planted all my onions using a random stick😂 One of my kids lost my “stick” that comes with the square foot garden guide🤷♀️
Looking great! Blessings on your growing season Kiddo!🌻🐛Carolyn in Ohio 🌿
Hi Rachel, my apologies I have been absent- my Husband had Open Heart Triple Bypass & it has been a long recovery- ALL Fantastic now. I am lucky I work in my own business from a home office & I get to check my vege garden daily- my staff tell me stay out there & enjoy so sometimes I do play hooky from the office. 🤩😍
Glad all is well ☺️
I've noticed the same thing this year with strawberries, I had lots of them buried and wouldn't you know it they were all growing. I didn't do it on purpose but they all got moved and replanted.
Can't wait to see it grow I've seen people grow it in their front yard PBS 🙌 love from Virginia ♥️
I have one of those seats too. They are awesome!
Kỹ thuật trồng cây của bạn rất tốt ,chúc bạn có một vụ thu hoạch tốt .
I'm so glad you mentioned and tagged the seat! I was thinking "Is that a seat she's sitting in???" I ordered it..can't wait to get it.
Thank you for sitting down to plant your green beans. I feel so validated!😂😂😂
How do the deer not get in your garden? I had 7 foot fencing, and they jumped it, so I went to 8 feet. You sure have a beautiful garden. Thank you for taking us with you on your planting.
Neighbors house is pretty close, so they mostly stay away and hang out back.
Blue lake will produce well for y'all. We grow it every summer ourselves. We try to experiment a bit every year as well . If we don't like something I'm sure something will.
Jill Winger did a show on wheat, “S14 E11: What You NEED to Know Before You Start Grinding Your Own Flour” . I just like putting in a fresh store bought thawed frozen bread loaf into the oven, on a cooler morning like today, and enjoying that with butter!
I’m curious how you will harvest that wheat!
I did an experiment years ago and planted wheat 10x10 square. Just tossed the seed than lightly raked it like you do with grass seed. It grew very well but doesn't like soggy soil more dry but sadly we got a little less than 3 cups in the end not really worth it unless you are planting acres.
Thank you! Did some research a few years ago and the average American eats a quarter acre of wheat per year.
I have a 4x7' winter wheat patch growing! I call it my wheat field. 2nd try cuz the chickies got to it last year. Oh well, it's basically cover crop & bird food anyway. Still tho, good to try different carb crops.
I’m just sitting here thinking how I would probably go buy compost and throw an inch over that plot of wheat. lol
Too much nutrients and the wheat just falls over at the first gust of wind.
@@swunt10 what do you think about getting bags of top soil instead?
@@swunt10 what do you think about getting bags of top soil instead?
@@libbylauderdale1382 OK I guess if it's just soil? I'm not an expert though. I wouldn't buy any soil from a random place without having it tested first. Also why buy soil? I hope you don't want to buy soil because you are too lazy to work the seeds into the ground? That would seem a bit ridiculous. It's so much easier to rake the seeds into the ground than to buy new ground to put on top of the seeds. Imagine farmers doing that
Rachel love your Garden tips ❤I also love your cute , comfortable Knit Outfit , are those available to purchase , I would love one for Farm and Gardening ❤
I am finishing harvesting my wheat crop from last year. My husband jokingly asked if I have invested 10 minutes per each kernel harvested. He might be right!
I forgot to add that.... Low Technology Institute has some good info on raising and harvesting wheat by hand.
I’m going to go get them. Past or future.
I would lightly cover the seeds to keep the birds off of them.
❤❤❤
I’m sorry but… HOW CUTE ARE YOU IN THAT ONESIE?!?! Love it!
Guineas love to roam.
Hi Rachel! What kind of boots are those?
These are them. Had them about 6 years now: amzn.to/4b7aE0e
Replant the removed strawberry stats in pots I bet people will buy them from ur stand 😊
🤗❤️
I’ve planted cabbage for the first time this year and I have covered them with the floating row covers, how long do they stay covered for? The entire growing season? Thanks 😊
Do you have black fly season there? It's been near impossible to garden with all the black flies swarming and biting right now. I ran out and planted my peas and spinach as fast as I could with a few bites before running back inside today.
We don’t have black flies where I live, I’m sorry you ah e that problem. Maybe get a bee suit?
You might want to look into beneficial parasitic wasps-- they don't sting humans and can help reduce the fly population over time. The wasp lays eggs on fly larvae and the baby wasps feed on it so there are eventually fewer flies. You can buy the parasitic wasps online or thru a local garden center and release them in your garden.
We don't really get them here. We do up at our cabin some, but not here.
You should turn this video into a GIF at the 5:00 mark
Between 5:00 and 5:30. Separate gifs. Lol. That’s funny :-)
I miss u
May I point something out. The way your lifting yourself from seat will cause you problems in forearms and shoulders. My forearms are so over tightened and weak that when I use any watering can, the water just dumps out. Fingers. Difficult cutting carrots, pealing potatoes. Well that's what happened to me anyway.
What zone are you in?

@@1870s Thank you.
You need a seeder
We have a very old grass seeder, would work perfectly 🥰
I love hearing all your birds in the background.
